Tilting the Void

Warning: swearing, knitting, drinking, and Oxford commas might be involved.

Quel horreur, as them Frenchies say!

You ever been writing away full steam only to have the stupid writing machine thingie go black and unresponsive?

Yeah. That happens when you're slouching progressively lower in the chair until your toe actually kicks the freakin' powerstrip switch.

I did not know I could swear like that. I had my suspicions, but that was pretty damn impressive--and no, I will not tell you what I called the computer, myself, Fate, and the state of things in the world in general. Suffice it to say the plastic on my keyboard is still steaming.

BTW--if you're French, don't take it personally. It's an oblique reference to the Scarlet Pimpernel, not an aspersion cast on your magnifique country.

That is all.

"They seek him here,
They seek him there,
The Frenchies seek him everywhere!
Is he in Heaven?
Or is he in --Hell? (gasps)
That demmed elusive
Pimpernel!"

Heh.

Note to friend L: See where the germ of a certain villain came from?

Yes, my friend. A 1980s tv series.

That tv series also had a younger Ian McKellan as Chauvelin. He was excellent even then.

And I read the novel after seeing the series, and still loved it--don't know if I could read it now. But it was fun when I was 12!

"quelle horreur", indeed :D

You could have said "Nom de D... de putain de bordel de merde!" as well. but this is really less High-class swear.

Ha! Even with my poor knowledge of the language, I know what that means! Well, part of it

French is one language I wish I knew better, definitely. Well, there are several, but I'm American--which means I'm lucky I can speak any language!

...and the ability to swear in foreign languages to me is indubitably an art form :D

My mother read the novel when I was about 12. I loved "Robin Hood" and "The Three Muscateers," so she suggested I read it, too. It was great!

Nice post. Now I have to go find the movie!

There are a few--Richard Grant did one in the 90s, which was okay, but Anthony Andrews (he of Brideshead Revisited fame) to me is the best one. Probably '84, 85? Earlier? It's sometimes hard to find. For a tv series, it had some gorgeous costumes, too.

Say.... I have the Lux Radio Theater version of "The Scarlet Pimpernel," if you are interested?

By noah counte, # 13. May 2008, 18:30:36

avatar
Lux Radio? Neva heard of it. Englighten me, if you please

By mlynnjohnson, # 13. May 2008, 19:19:21

Lux Radio Theater was an hour long radio program that adapted great films of the day to the radio. They used the original staars, where possible. For example, Humphrey Bogart starred in the adaptations of "To Have and Have Not" and "Treasure of the Sierra Madre," and Cary Grant and Irene Dunn starred in the adaptation of "Mr. Blanding Builds His Dreamhouse."

The Lux Radio adaptation of "The Scarlet Pimernel" stars Leslie Howard and Olivia de Haviland. Howard plays the role he played in the 1934 screen version, and de Haviland plays the role that Merle Oberon played on screen.

Chauvelin in that version (Ian McKellan) is so delightfully evil. Of course it's because they used all those sterling Brit actors, too.

For a long time I was entirely in love with that whole era, for all the wrong reasons :D (costumes being one of them).

By mlynnjohnson, # 16. May 2008, 01:47:00

Nothing wrong with costumes!

Did you get that file (if you were interested)? I'm going to take it down, if you have.

As far as the women go, I like the costumes. The men, not so much.

Matthew--haven't gotten it yet, but I'll do that right now.

Edward--And me, exactly the opposite! I adore frock coats...

HAHAHHAAHA....

Scarlet Pimpernel, Lux Radio Theater. (right click, blah blah blah).

I remember typing it in. Must have pasted a bad link instead. Old age is hell. The lack of comments on my error speaks to either the kindness of your readers, or the fact that no one reads what I say.

I really did test it this time - it works. Have you got a deent headband?

By noah counte, # 16. May 2008, 01:58:34

Ah! I has it now. You can take it down, and I do appreciate the effort. Listening to an advert for "Lux" soap right now, heh. Sounds awesome!

By mlynnjohnson, # 16. May 2008, 02:01:27

And, in the Guys in Frock Coats category, Hugh Laurie, currently playing on House, used to wear some frocked coats in The Black Adder.

Oooh, ooh! BA is teh awesome, especially for frock coats!

I loved "A Bit of Fry and Laurie," as well as "Jeeves and Wooster." I should look for the DVDs. But myself is too cheap to shell out that kind of cash. heh.

By noah counte, # 16. May 2008, 02:06:46

You wouldn't want to piss yourself off by buying any DVDs. You know how yourself feels about that kind of thing.

Sometimes I hate myself for being such a skinflynt. Then he talks some sense into me, and I'm OK.
