Did Khilafah only exist for 30 years?

Question: The need for Khilafah has become well established and many Muslims now call for it. However, some people claim that the Khilafah only lasted for 30 years and that thereafter the Khilafah ceased to exist. Does this understanding have any Islamic basis? And is it a valid justification for not establishing Khilafah today just because it only lasted 30 years?

Islam is relevant for all times and places

“But the problem is that it (Islam) does not just oppose libertinism. Having never had a ‘reformation’, which would have forced it to make an accommodation with modernity, it is fundamentally intolerant and illiberal. As a result, it directly conflicts with western values in areas such as the treatment of women, freedom of speech, the separation of private and public values, and tolerance of homosexuality. These are all liberal fundamentals and are not negotiable.”

Bush's Democratic Legacy

Issues Explained

In his 2006 State of the Union speech, President George W Bush hailed that he wanted to see the fires of democracy burn across the world. Sadly, fires are now indeed burning across the world!

Whether one looks at Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan or Kenya, Bush's statement has a grim irony about it. Yet despite the turmoil and bloodshed of Pakistan and Kenya, western capitals continue to insist that democratic elections will rescue these countries from all out civil war while it has been the very struggle for power via national elections that has ignited the terrifying violence and bloodshed that has dominated the headlines in recent days. Is democracy, therefore, the universal saviour or in actual fact the problem? Can democracy truly solve the problems of the increasing numbers of failed states?

The US State Department and British Foreign Office have both publicly stated that they urge Pakistan to remain on the democratic course. It is important to recall that these US and British ‘democrats' have presently sanctioned very bloody wars in Afghanistan and Iraq - two countries, invaded and occupied - where, incidentally, there are said to be democratically elected governments.

Not only in Iraq and Afghanistan has democracy failed to bring stability and security. The latest example of the divisive nature of democracy is in Kenya where elections have inflamed old rivalries with the hostility and killings based on tribal affiliation. In Pakistan feudal landlords, dating back to the British Raj, indoctrinated in western educational institutions hail democracy while divided along tribal and dynastic lines.

True, these states are far from being mature democracies - which itself is a work in progress. However, democracy, even if implemented well, is far from the panacea that it is proclaimed to be. It is divisive by its very nature. Vested interests dominate the electoral process thereby undermining the process of representation-hence the concern surrounding the transparency of donations to political parties and the funding of election campaigns. Minorities are devalued because it is the will of the majority that counts. Law making is left to popular opinion with its biases and inconsistencies. As any lawyer will acknowledge ‘good law' is never popular. Stability and continuity are undermined as governments and policies change while promises in manifestos are rarely adhered to. Politicians once elected pay more heed to their personal political careers or political party whips and less to their electorate. These are just some of the oft-mentioned flaws in democracy.

The US nowadays is a little less forthright in its proclamation of democracy largely due to the rise in popular support for political Islam across the Muslim world. This shows the disingenuous nature of the western call for democracy, as western ‘democrats' clearly do not want the peoples of the developing world, particularly the Muslim world, to have greater empowerment when it may jeopardise their national interests. The deafening silence by western capitals at the sham re-election of Islam Karimov, another of Bush's allies in the war on terror, is a poignant reminder of this duplicity. Thus, the west will only practically support democracy when they can choose the appropriate winner!

Could the destruction of CIA torture tapes be Bush's "Waterboarding-gate"?

Issues Explained

As George W Bush prepares to embark on his Middle East tour, largely believed to be a last ditch attempt to establish his international legacy by forging an agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians along the lines of the two-state solution, the latest scandal to afflict his ailing administration at home is likely to become its defining legacy.

NO2ID

NO2ID is a grass-roots campaign in the UK that developed in opposition to the government's proposed National Identity Scheme. In the proposed scheme, national identification cards would be issued to individuals over the age of 16. The cards would be linked to a database of citizen information known as the national information registry (NIR). The name "NO2ID" is an abbreviation of the phrase "say NO to a national ID."
Part of the NIR proposal calls for linking personal information already present in multiple government databases as a means of creating more comprehensive proofs of identity, as well as records of residence and activity. NO2ID refers to such an eventuality as "the database state."
Among other things, those involved in the NO2ID campaign are concerned about:
the potential means used to collect and maintain NIR data
the accuracy and integrity of data across multiple repositories
possible exposure of private data to unscrupulous third parties
fears of increasing government oversight and control.
There are thousands of NO2ID groups across the UK, with one in nearly every medium to large city or metropolitan area, plus numerous NO2ID groups active online. According to Phil Booth, National Coordinator of the NO2ID campaign, the membership has increased very quickly:
I have been told that NO2ID was the most rapidly growing civil liberties campaign in recent British history - from a pub meeting of less than a dozen volunteers (a week after a public meeting attended by about 350 people at the LSE) to 10,000 registered supporters in well under a year.
As of January 2008, the group has over 30,000 registered members. As Booth explains, the actual number of supporters is almost certainly much higher, given the reluctance of many involved to divulge personal information and NO2ID's policy of not asking people for such data. In support of that theory, Booth mentions Unison, a public service workers' union with a membership of 1.3 million. At its last national conference, the union voted to affiliate with NO2ID.

What has made America, which dominates power in Pakistan

Answer:
The answer to this question requires us to look back for a proper perspective:

Changes started to take shape on the fast track in Pakistan with the arrival of Bush and the Neo-Conservatives to power in the United States and more so in the aftermath of the 9/11 blasts. The American invasion of Afghanistan was a crucial factor in the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, America’s main agent in the region siding with the Americans in their invasion of Afghanistan and, in their war against the Muslim Mujahideen within Pakistan itself. Musharraf’s joining the US in its “War on Terror” (War on Islam) was in effect a declaration of a New Crusade War against the Jehadi outfits and movements in Kashmir, who used Pakistan as their stronghold and launching point.
By aligning himself with the US, Musharraf succeeded in depriving the Mujahideen their stronghold and safe bases in Pakistan. He succeeded where all previous Pakistani governments failed in their attempts to close down the Mujahideen camps. Musharraf prosecuted and arrested the Mujahideen and branded them as terrorists.

George Bush to push $20bn Saudi arms deal

Sunday, 13 January 2008

US president George W. Bush is to promise $20 billion in advanced weaponry to Saudi Arabia as he travels through the Gulf states to garner support for further sanctions against Iran.

Yet even that gesture will not be enough to convince moderate Arab states to shun Iran, in a sign of its growing status as a Muslim world superpower.

The weapons deal, which is to include precision-guided missiles, first surfaced last autumn but was postponed over opposition in the US Congress.

Now the Bush administration is to notify Congress on Monday of its intent to conclude the deal, as Mr Bush lands in Riyadh.

The deal comes as America’s top commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, revealed that attacks in Iraq linked to Iranian explosive devices had sharply increased in recent days.

He said violence caused by "explosively formed projectiles" was up by a factor of two or three in recent days.
