Native version of Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile

, , , , ,

Today we launched the native version of Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile 5- and 6- based handsets.

By integrating Opera Mini with the Windows Mobile platform we are able to deliver an optimized version of Opera Mini that dramatically improves performance and the overall user experience.

While Opera Mini traditionally requires Java, the new Windows Mobile version does not, which means the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) on the Windows Mobile device is no longer needed to run Opera Mini.

The native version of Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile includes the same rich feature set as the Java-based version, and is available in 58 fully-translated languages.

To download Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile handsets visit http://m.opera.com/next using your phone's native browser. If you have problems with the installation, delete your current one first, then try again.

As always, we welcome your feedback in our forum, and please report any bugs in our bug report wizard. Thanks!

Best Regards,
The Opera Mini team

THANK YOU !!!

Amazing yikes Well done Opera Mini team. I hope this solves many issues that people keep on posting on Opera Mini forum, like compatibility with the phone's JVM. Good work http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Adore.gif -

This is awesome! It's much faster than the one running on KVM (esp. scrolling), and faster than Opera Mobile in loading pages.

Does this thing use Microemulator?

Good news.

KYrenKYren Thursday, March 4, 2010 9:36:10 AM

up I am happy with the opera mobile on my E71. I wish it had feed support just like opera mini 4. Can you manage to support flash lite 3 on it or even better if it played full flash just like Skyfire.

Pallab DeIndyan Thursday, March 4, 2010 9:39:03 AM

Good move.

Skyfire transcode the flash in their server. For playing full flash directly on your device you need the full Adobe Flash player. As far as I know, only very few handhelds like Nokia N900 can do that. Read more about this for example here: http://my.opera.com/haavard/blog/2009/11/04/s60-flash

I am very happy with opera mini on my HTC Diamond. Good work!

Maxim TarasovTamaleo Thursday, March 4, 2010 10:46:25 AM

Ow, let’s face it you, Opera team, love windows. You really don’t care about other OSes. Still, it’s no stable version mini 5 for mobile phones (5b since September). No Android version too.
Good 4 u, WiMo users!

KYrenKYren Thursday, March 4, 2010 10:51:32 AM

Serola, is there any chance that flash 10.1 be released for s60v3 as it's recently released for android? The flash lite 3 on E71 is specially for the native browser.

No idea, sorry sad Everything I know about Flash on mobile devices is based on what I have read elsewhere. I still have an old SE K800i, and there's not even Flash Lite.

However, the greatest limit for full flash is the hardware. I'm quite sure you just can't get something like Flash 10.1 into old device where's not enough RAM and processor power.

EDIT: Sorry for being off-topic o

Yeah, I know that, I'm interested in how you made it into a native application.

How do you go from Java bytecode to native windows mobile?

Is this a builtin native emulator that runs the opera mini jar?
Did you rewrite parts of the app in C++? Did you use some sort of source code conversion?

I'm really interested in what sort of effort was required for this.

Native opera mini 5 don't get me the mobile view of www.mjoy.com (to login and so on). It redirects me to the desktop view worried

this works with 4.2 and 5 beta...

Plazzmex Thursday, March 4, 2010 1:19:59 PM

I don't understand your policy between opera mobile and opera mini..
I thought opera mini is for j2me phones that isn't smartphones, while opera mobile is only for smartphones like Symbian, Windows Mobile and others programed on native Api..
Better for opera to create finally an iPhone and Android versions of opera mobile !

Maybe Opera Mini 5 for Windows Mobile 5- and 6- based handsets was easy to make byproduct while already developing Opera Mini for iPhone and Android.

And yes, I did noticed you say Opera Mobile for iPhone and Android. I recommend reading everything said about getting Opera Mini into iPhone. I have understood it's easier to get Apple Store to accept Opera Mini than full stand alone Opera Mobile.

But what comes to Opera Mobile for Android, I understood that it's coming already.

Morevoer, I guess Opera Mini is pushed to all these smartphones because people keep on asking it. In a long run Opera Mini and Opera Mobile may become one, but currently there still is room for both of them. Some users just prefer to use lightning fast and small Opera Mini instead of also quite fast Opera Mobile and Opera Turbo.

NICE!!! Thank you!

Hope it works great. Off to play.

How do we set it as our default browser?

lexluthor5 Thursday, March 4, 2010 3:03:02 PM

I've got a VGA Touch Pro and even on Small, the font size is very large. Anything I can do about that?

vidkid Thursday, March 4, 2010 5:54:02 PM

Very nice browser, has made me drop mobile for mini5.

BUT

How do you set mini as default without re-installing it?

cheers,

Vid

The settings menu does not have a place to set landscape mode. Can it be set to autorotate?

I have an HTC Touch HD.

murlidhar Thursday, March 4, 2010 7:43:28 PM

wow... so when are we getting a native symbian opera mini client? cuz honestly i liked operamini rendering pages better than operamobile wink

illiad Thursday, March 4, 2010 8:27:30 PM

murlidhar: symbian phones are java capable, so no need to make a non-java one like they did for windows... you HAVE read the top page????

Opera mobile for symbian IS native... you can also use operamini on it... the only way you are going Opwinmobile on it, is install windows on your phone.. YES it has been done.. smile

By using native code, basically. That means that it's not just "recompiled" Java. There's more to it than that, of course, but that is not up to me to announce.

micfey Friday, March 5, 2010 11:10:03 AM

Syncing not working correctly - only a few bookmarks appear. Actually, no bookmarks from folders get synced. Only the ones that are toplevel. So it's pretty unusable. But i had this problem with every beta since the first of om5.

Skyfire doesn't support full Flash. It only shows a slow slideshow of the Flash content.

opera link is not working sad sad

QasimQasibr Saturday, March 6, 2010 6:12:23 PM

I wonder if Opera's planning an S60/Symbian version. A native version will have a pretty huge advantage over interpreted java stuff when it comes to things like smoothly scrolling huge, complex webpages, opening a bunch of tabs, etc.

Opera shouldn't hold Mini back to prevent it from competing with Opera Mobile, because that would make Mini an inferior product. Opera's competitors wouldn't hold their products back, and it would give them an advantage, being able to go to places Mini wouldn't be able to.

JZ SmartMortJZSmartMort Sunday, March 7, 2010 5:21:01 AM

Very fast and impressive. For people who wish to use Opera Mini as a default system-level browser check out my software package:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=382043

The only problem I've encountered so far is not being able to pass the URL in the command-line as a parameter to the EXE. Opera Mobile 10 does have this working correctly... I've reported the bug already. In general all browsers should allow passing the URL to the EXE directly.

Thank you!

Backspace bug in winmo.please

bhsand Tuesday, March 9, 2010 10:37:31 AM

I tried submitting two bugs the other day. Can the Mini team confirm if they were received or not? I provided the email associated with this account, but did not receive any email confirmation, and Mini just seemed to reload the bug report wizard when trying to submit (haha...experiencing bugs while reporting a bug, great).

1) Scrolling from left to right in Google Reader (full version, not the simple "reading list" mobile version) doesn't work properly.

2) Native Windows mobile version does not call upon the correct keyboards on my HTC Touch HD. E.g. there is a www version of the HTC keyboard, including a ".com" button etc. And forms where the type is identified as email should call upon the "email version" of the HTC keyboard. IE does this, Opera Mini does not.

illiad Tuesday, March 9, 2010 11:22:44 AM

bhsand: if you cannot get to a full computer have you tried using the browser that came with your phone??

bhsand Tuesday, March 9, 2010 1:07:38 PM

The problem is not to resubmit the bugs, but it isn't necessary if the reports already are received, or if the issues are known.

Sami Serolaserola Tuesday, March 9, 2010 1:36:45 PM

@ bhsand - One of the new nasty bugs is the posts never submitted. If you put your address into bug report, and did not receive any email about the reported bug, then I'm quite sure the post never went through sad

Moreover, I recommend having discussions like this on Opera Mini forum. Notice the sticky thread opened for this release.

Ok, thanks. I knew that Desktop bugs always are confirmed if an email is provided, but I wasn't sure if the same applied for Mini bugs. It's pretty serious if there are bugs with the bug tracker IMO, this should definitely be prioritized.

Yeah, I have both noticed and read the sticky thread. And I noticed this blog post (also specifically for this release), and chose posting it one of the places instead of cross-posting, which is annoying. Why is the forums preferable? Employees read feedback provided both in the forums and in the official blog.

Not officially... the devs are far too busy to look at every post!! and most that do are **using their spare time**

a bug report is *always* the best way... what would you think, if you are having a quiet tea in the cafe, and you boss came in with orders for you?? (well you were talking to a friend about that project...)
