Native version of Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile
By MarianneManneS. Thursday, March 4, 2010 8:34:03 AM
By integrating Opera Mini with the Windows Mobile platform we are able to deliver an optimized version of Opera Mini that dramatically improves performance and the overall user experience.
While Opera Mini traditionally requires Java, the new Windows Mobile version does not, which means the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) on the Windows Mobile device is no longer needed to run Opera Mini.
The native version of Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile includes the same rich feature set as the Java-based version, and is available in 58 fully-translated languages.
To download Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile handsets visit http://m.opera.com/next using your phone's native browser. If you have problems with the installation, delete your current one first, then try again.
As always, we welcome your feedback in our forum, and please report any bugs in our bug report wizard. Thanks!
Best Regards,
The Opera Mini team

However, the greatest limit for full flash is the hardware. I'm quite sure you just can't get something like Flash 10.1 into old device where's not enough RAM and processor power.
EDIT: Sorry for being off-topic

Yeah, I know that, I'm interested in how you made it into a native application.
How do you go from Java bytecode to native windows mobile?
Is this a builtin native emulator that runs the opera mini jar?
Did you rewrite parts of the app in C++? Did you use some sort of source code conversion?
I'm really interested in what sort of effort was required for this.

I thought opera mini is for j2me phones that isn't smartphones, while opera mobile is only for smartphones like Symbian, Windows Mobile and others programed on native Api..
Better for opera to create finally an iPhone and Android versions of opera mobile !

And yes, I did noticed you say Opera Mobile for iPhone and Android. I recommend reading everything said about getting Opera Mini into iPhone. I have understood it's easier to get Apple Store to accept Opera Mini than full stand alone Opera Mobile.
But what comes to Opera Mobile for Android, I understood that it's coming already.
Morevoer, I guess Opera Mini is pushed to all these smartphones because people keep on asking it. In a long run Opera Mini and Opera Mobile may become one, but currently there still is room for both of them. Some users just prefer to use lightning fast and small Opera Mini instead of also quite fast Opera Mobile and Opera Turbo.

Opera shouldn't hold Mini back to prevent it from competing with Opera Mobile, because that would make Mini an inferior product. Opera's competitors wouldn't hold their products back, and it would give them an advantage, being able to go to places Mini wouldn't be able to.

The only problem I've encountered so far is not being able to pass the URL in the command-line as a parameter to the EXE. Opera Mobile 10 does have this working correctly... I've reported the bug already. In general all browsers should allow passing the URL to the EXE directly.
Thank you!

1) Scrolling from left to right in Google Reader (full version, not the simple "reading list" mobile version) doesn't work properly.
2) Native Windows mobile version does not call upon the correct keyboards on my HTC Touch HD. E.g. there is a www version of the HTC keyboard, including a ".com" button etc. And forms where the type is identified as email should call upon the "email version" of the HTC keyboard. IE does this, Opera Mini does not.

Moreover, I recommend having discussions like this on Opera Mini forum. Notice the sticky thread opened for this release.

Yeah, I have both noticed and read the sticky thread. And I noticed this blog post (also specifically for this release), and chose posting it one of the places instead of cross-posting, which is annoying. Why is the forums preferable? Employees read feedback provided both in the forums and in the official blog.
