Testers wanted: Opera Mobile 10.1 beta for Symbian/S60
By Dag Olav Noremdagolav. Thursday, July 15, 2010 7:23:54 AM
The main new features include:
- Geolocation. Web sites can now query the location of your device. End user controls access on a site by site basis.
- Carakan JavaScript engine (w/o JIT)
- Vega graphics library
- Update of Opera Core and numerous bug fixes
Download Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta for S60 directly to your phone at m.opera.com/next.
Or download direct to your PC here:
Known issues in the 10.1 Beta:
- Somewhat higher memory usage, especially on JavaScript intensive sites
- Due to timing issues with different geolocation information providers (WiFi, cell towers, GPS) first request may have poor precision
- Fast scrolling on Touch devices not optimized for page rendering
- Opera Link may not work when using APN with a proxy configured
- Some SVGT images may appear to freeze on Nokia E-series phones
- If SIM card is not registered, or phone is in flight mode, first geolocation request in a browser session may fail
As always, we welcome your feedback here in our forum. Thanks!

The Bookmarks now works great. In the previous versions I had some ghost white-lines of empty bookmarks.

It is the best mobile browser currently on Nokia bar none.
It definitely feels faster then the previous version 10.
Is there a chance to incorporate JIT in Nokia phones? I mean can it be done for example on Nokia 5800 given that it has small amount of free memory to begin with?

however, plz make the fonts within the browser little bigger like in bookmarks, settings etc. These cannot be changed with fontsize setting which increses fonts within the web pages only.

Just 3 requests:
1) Zoom other than 100% will give a bit blocky images when not using turbo mode.
2) In fullscreen mode, when the page is loading the back button actually means stop loading. This should be indicated with a X, to avoid confusion.
3) Open in new tab should not open the tab as front most, I'd like to continue to read on the page I'm in, then after the new tab has loaded, switch to it and read on...
Keep up the good work!

I'm using a nokia 5800 and it works fine.
Here are my appreciation
Good things :
- it is faster than the version 10
- There is the tab download because in the earlier version, i can't see the percentage of my download
Things to be revised :
- I downloaded something and after the downloading, i can't see the file in the tab download. i must go to the explorer and remember the directory to open it.
- When i select text and hold it to copy (this is the procedure for the nokia 5800, but may be there is another way that i don't know), I selected successfully all the text I wanted, but sometimes, I forgot some words. And I lust redo the same action to select all the text.
It will be very usefull if there is a button at the bottom which activate/deativate an edit mode/view mode so the text selection will be very easy than holding the screen waiting for the "Select text" to appear

What I noticed:
1) I pick a larger zoom size but bookmarks are still displayed with a very tiny font that cannot be changed and is very hard to read (same with the text in the URL, search boxes, menus, settings, etc). Older Opera Mini had an option for text size that applied to all areas.
2) Images in portrait mode are not displayed with the correct ratio (streched, pulled from top/bottom).
4) Noticed that http://mobile.bloomberg.com does not adjust to the screen width and I have to move sideways in order to read the page. When zoomed out it fills the screen, but the text is too small (does not acknoledge the zoom factor?). I have the "Mobile view" option clicked on. (BTW this site behaves well with opera mini on a Sony Ericsson TM506).
5) Out of memory message while loading NYT mobile page (not every time though).
6) Tried downloading a large video and got "There is not enough disk space..." (I guess it only looks at C: or the internal memory). The drop down does not let me choose "Memory card" or drive E: as the Opera Mini version does in the SE TM506.
Only "pictures", "videos", "sounds" and "music" but without being specific of either drive C: or E: will show in the drop down choice of the download dialog.
Thanks for all the good work!

Twitter Mobile at http://mobile.twitter.com/ does not present a clickable link when the cursor hovers above the Favourite button of a tweet. Again, the E63's default browser renders this just fine.
As I use both sites regularly--sometimes on a daily basis--it'd be great if these two bugs could be fixed by the next beta. Thanks!

1. Feature request: landscape/portrait view manual switch (like in Opera Mini)
2. Incorrect behavior: Switching Zoom levels often produces inconsistent results, sometimes when switching between various levels no zooming occurs, only thing notices is slightly modified page layout but everything is still small.
Setup I use: Images off, Fullscreen on, Mobile view off, Opera Turbo off, Default Zoom 200%.
URL to reproduce: pretty much anything - www.opera.com for example
Steps to reproduce: just use my settings, open opera.com, change zoom level via menu and see the difference. Sometimes it (zooming) seems to work, so play with it a bit more - open any other URL, switch zoom levels, open opera.com again, switch zoom levels.
Zooming by tapping on the screen works well, but I'd like to have it working via menu option Zoom, especially leave it set to approx. 200% and have it working which is quite problem.

I would like to make suggestions which I would like to see in Opera Mobile & Mini. These are:-
1). Flash Support
I would love to see flash being introduced in Opera Mobile as soon as possible since i love watching videos. I would requet you to kindly bring Flash Support in Opera Mobile 10.
2). Long Press Backward Key
When we are in full screen view and surfing net and want to return to specific page back, I would like to see when we long press the Backward Key a menu pop ups which show the currently visited pages in the same tab rather than going to the menu and browsing history and then clicking a link. This feature would make Opera Mobile & Mini more great and Best browser and make browsing easier.
3). Download Rate
I would like to see at what rate my current download i going at i. e. the download rate. Please bring thi feature soon.
4). Customization
I would like to change theme of the opera mobile and mini, set a background to speed dial page, e.tc. which will make Opera more Appealing.
5). Less RAM hogging
I would Request Opera to come up with less resource hogging Opera Mobile Update as i am using Nokia 5800 and i have free RAM of only 45MB. Please see it once.
6). Torrent Integration
I love this Feature on my Opera Desktop and would love to see it on Opera Mobile 10. Please bring this feature to Opera Mobile.
I hope My suggestions are seriously looked upon and the suggestions i have made can be seen by me and all other fans as soon as possible. I hope my suggestions do not fall into deaf ears. Hoping for a positive response from your side.
Overall opera Mobile 10.1 Beta installed nicely on my nokia 5800 and also worked great.

it's reproducible on fast phones as well. as simply a bug. and page isn't that huge. there is a lot of scripts, but almost no graphics. and this site is among top 5 of viewed sites by opera users.

Also would like to use more levels of zoom on s60v3-perhaps using the dedicated volume up and down buttons, and/or being able to jump to the top/bottom of webpages with these buttons would be very useful.

when trying to install Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta on the Nokia n78 I get an error message. Something like:
"certificate error, contact the developer".
What can I do to solve this problem?

Other mobile browsers (e.g. UC Browser and Digia @Web) support this feature, I wish Opera would do, too.
Nevertheless I like Opera Mobile very much, and the 10.1 is noticable faster than the 10.0.
