Opera Mini is the mobile web browser that turns any feature phone into a smarter device. Now, with Opera Mini Next, a preview version of what’s next for Opera Mini, feature phones get even smarter with advanced social media functions.

The web doesn’t stop evolving, and Opera Mini evolves with it. Introducing the Smart Page, a new feature previewing in the Opera Mini Next series of browsers for feature phones, to be launched on all Opera Mini browsers for feature phones later this year. The Smart Page will take its position alongside Opera’s famous Speed Dial shortcuts and give feature phones smarter access to social networks, the latest news and more.

With social integration of Facebook and Twitter right in the first screen of Opera Mini Next, feature phone users get even closer to the social web of their lives and a smarter online experience.

In smartphone versions of Opera Mini Next, the Smart Page will not make an appearance in this version. For smartphones, we’ve focused on improving the web experience itself. Android users of Opera Mini Next will get a smoother browsing experience, with hardware acceleration and a revamped Speed Dial. The revamped Speed Dial screen, with an unlimited number of Speed Dial shortcuts, debuts in all versions of Opera Mini Next for easy access to all your favorite websites.

  • Fixed an issue where it was not possible to get a context menu for an URL text input field
  • Last character of a long word was missing when input was done

  • Translations for Arabic, Farsi, Urdu and Hebrew
  • Support for Russian input in Opera VK (S60 only)
  • Quick access to URL/search from Symbian status bar (S60 5.0 and Symbian^3)

Known issues:

  • Device specific bugs for RTL
  • RTL is not fully supported in input fields (S60)

Opera Mobile is a full browser with client-side support for JavaScript, HTML5, Flash (Android only) and more. In Opera Mini, the browser engine is running on Opera's servers. Web pages are transcoded and compressed up to 90% before being downloaded to the device, making Opera Mini lightning fast and also much cheaper if you are paying per megabyte.

Is it possible to disable the new HOME screen? I see no use for it, it would be just in the way in accessing the speed dials - and increased number of the speed dials is fantastic.

Yes, Settings -> Advanced and Home page on/off.

This version will install next to the version you already have on your device. It has a different icon, and is called "Opera Mini Next".

No, this can't be installed over the current 6.5. You will have to wait for the final release before that happens.

You can use Opera Link to synchronize the settings between current and Next version of Opera Mini. Not sure about the saved pages, though. But who can stop you from trying? smile

Since there is now a home page built into Opera Mini Next, there should be an option for users to have the home pages of their choice if they don't want Opera's default home page.

For those worried about access to Speed Dials, Opera Mini team could make a "opera:speeddials" URL or something that we could bookmark or make that the home page if wanted.

Final version or Next? Next is already out (http://m.opera.com/next), but the final version hasn't. The Next is the "beta" version of Opera Mini.

wow.. This is the best Opera Mini ever so far. It runs very well on my j2me (s40 v3) phone, unlike Mini 5 and 6 it doesn't close so often because of 'application error' (i.e. something like - out of memory..bla bla bla), which I do hope wouldn't happen later:) I LIKE Opera Mini Next VERY MUCH.
Btw, is there a shortcut to 'go to bottom/top page' like it was in Mini 4? Someone plz tell me..

No, it was removed to make room for other shortcuts.

Nokia E51, all OK, except all feeds, what exists in Mini, doesn't exist in Next. It must be a bug, as all others, bookmarks, speed dial does exists. I also tried disconnect/connect Opera Link, still no luck, no feds in Next.

The feeds does not carry over. You would have to re-add. Please support this request to add the feature to Opera Mini: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1307912
