Opera Mini beta contest

, ,

We know you're waiting anxiously for the Opera Mini Dimension beta release. Trust me, we're having a hard time waiting ourselves (except for the developers and testers all over the world working their butts off to make sure everything is just right). I wish I could say more, but it's going to be a really exciting release.

To make things interesting, we decided to run a small contest:

Send us your guesses as to what you think the biggest new feature of Opera Mini Dimension will be. For those who get it right or are the closest to getting it right, we'll send you a brand new Opera Mini tshirt, never before released until now. We'll give out three shirts. If more than three people guess correctly, we'll do a random drawing amongst the best guessers to select the three winners.

Send your best guess here: http://my.opera.com/Opera-contest/about/sendmsg.dml
Please use the following subject: beta

Deadline: ? (You don't seriously think we're going to give away the release date, do you? wink )

The deadline to submit your guesses is the release date of Opera Mini Dimension beta. Don't take a chance; send your guess early. Only one submission per contestant, and only one guess per submission. Good luck! up

Update (6/20/07)

Here are the winners (we'll be contacting you shortly):

Here at Opera, we are famous for our fast and furious brainstorming activities. Here are some photos documenting the evolution of our creative design process. Maybe they'll provide a clue or two as to what the biggest new feature is (or maybe not)...

So, it's a music playing, photo taking, motion controlled viking helm?

Or are we talking Flash to enable music, photos and games?

Ryan Octavianusphilry4n Friday, June 8, 2007 1:52:21 AM

And i was so sure it will be today p

finally after some hectic guessing and demanding to be rewarded at the forums p

Dark FurieFurie Friday, June 8, 2007 2:06:34 AM

Looks like ManneS is getting mugged on that date after all. devil

Ryan Octavianusphilry4n Friday, June 8, 2007 3:06:02 AM

I bet she won't bring her mobile phone

zjpops Friday, June 8, 2007 3:15:36 AM

I think this will be a opera mini with a media player and photo capturer and one which can be connected like a broadban.

Remember, don't guess in here, as others might "steal" your idea. Do as mentioned in the blog. smile

Dan Alexandrudantesoft Friday, June 8, 2007 4:13:22 AM

Bah, you crazy bunch of teasers. You should have posted OM friendly pics, you know most of us that don't browse with images off have small screens.

Ryan McCabermccabe916 Friday, June 8, 2007 4:16:45 AM

I know whatever's coming, the desktop team hasn't posted anything lately....what are they waiting for? sherlock

H82typ Friday, June 8, 2007 4:58:54 AM

They're waiting for me to perfect my dance routine...

Roy SihiteRoysihite Friday, June 8, 2007 5:42:24 AM

I think Dimension will be a Full HTML Internet browser + Landscape View + Compression

Øyvind ØstlundNoteMe Friday, June 8, 2007 7:19:31 AM

"The first line in the change log would be the biggest new feature."

Is it possible to lose with that guess??

I did come up with some solution based on those images. If those images contain clues I believe they depict more than one feature. And maybe some of them depict features which will not be in Opera Mini Dimension. I hope I chose the correct one.

Hmm. Maybe the big feature in Opera Mini dimension will be Chuck Norris. Because he can have any feature he wants. lol

FavDjiXas Friday, June 8, 2007 8:34:06 AM

Um... mini widgets? Download manager or anything else what is in Opera 9.2? Zoom maybe? Show/load images or not, etc?

Whatever :-) Just release it.

Daned4n3 Friday, June 8, 2007 10:54:01 AM

Step 1: Make cell-phone Viking helmet
Step 2: ?
Step 3: Profit!

Hermenhermen2048 Friday, June 8, 2007 6:29:27 PM

Nice way to prevent people from guessing features in public smile

MarianneManneS Friday, June 8, 2007 6:49:44 PM

Reminder: Only one guess per person, and only one guess in the PM. smile

So far we've had many replies. Keep on guessing! up

Dark FurieFurie Friday, June 8, 2007 8:05:05 PM

Oops I sent one with three guesses as well a second with one. Oh well. Dimension's my prize, not a t-shirt. bigsmile

theoddbod Friday, June 8, 2007 8:05:15 PM

All i'm getting is an image of Erik the Viking playing Wii Sports...

MarianneManneS Friday, June 8, 2007 8:47:35 PM

theoddbod Friday, June 8, 2007 9:54:37 PM

That's the fellow! Although I imagine him more as the character from this :

http://files.myopera.com/theoddbod/files/Erik_shrunk.JPG

and playing Wii Sports Bowling

MarianneManneS Friday, June 8, 2007 10:20:00 PM

That would be interesting to watch! bigsmile

Unholy_Prophecy Saturday, June 9, 2007 4:45:57 AM

ONLy one guess per person? I sent 4 guesses, each corrensponding to one picture. >_<

Ice ArdorIceArdor Saturday, June 9, 2007 7:04:17 AM

So there's a MASSIVE lense on top of the cell phone's camera, implying Opera Mini is going to focus more on blogging your pictures, perhaps?

It's going to have games and music and stuff... but isn't this just a new and improved My.Opera? How does this play into just the Mini?

jbergj Saturday, June 9, 2007 9:46:12 AM

support for turning your phone into a slingshot

Sayemsayem Saturday, June 9, 2007 11:39:21 AM

New opera mini beta should include some important features like: Uploading any file from mobiles harddisk/memory card. Uploading a file is a important feature of any internet browser.
Also i think users should be allowed to customize shortcut keys in new opera mini beta.
And ability of copying/pasteing any texts in pages/form in opera mini beta will be very helpful.
Bye

Dark FurieFurie Saturday, June 9, 2007 11:44:32 AM

@Ice. If you're right it could simply be enhanced camera integration. Currently with my phone I can take a photo in standard mode through Opera Mini. I can't access the flash or enhanced camera functions to ensure a decent photo.

@Sayem. You want the wishlist thread in the forums.

AzureTimm Sunday, June 10, 2007 2:50:13 AM

Hi dear developers, just like Furie stated, the new Opera mini is my prize, not some T-shirt... And I wonder whether you have the XXXL size to fit my massive body....

Regards, a fat boy, Timm.

Dark FurieFurie Sunday, June 10, 2007 7:34:05 AM

lol

Marcomyeagle Sunday, June 10, 2007 8:45:21 PM

DenisShulyaka Monday, June 11, 2007 6:39:41 AM

Oh, you don't know what to implement next, don't you? But the wishlist is too big, so you decided to find out most wanted features, didn't you? bigsmile

Dark FurieFurie Monday, June 11, 2007 8:07:38 AM

I was wondering about that myself.

"Right guys, we've got every new feature on the wishlist made and working now, but the download's up to 3mb."
"Why don't we run a competition and find out what they most want?"
"Even better, let's tell them it's to see if they can figure out what the best new feature is."

znos Tuesday, June 12, 2007 10:58:16 AM

this photo describes the most powerful feature of opera mini: http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/8185/newoperaminigb0.png
I guess smile

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, June 12, 2007 12:45:09 PM

I want that phone!

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Tuesday, June 12, 2007 12:55:03 PM

lol

Unless you have some abnormally big pockets, you'd better buy some new pants first then, Furie.

That image gave me an idea. How about a Opera Mini dimension "biggest new feature" photo contest? Where the pictures are in the same style as those in this blog post and that image.

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, June 12, 2007 1:14:50 PM

Who needs pockets? It'd be my at home data device. lol

JCcompking Wednesday, June 13, 2007 7:22:45 AM

It's obvious that the new feature will be viking helmet support/compatibility... haha

JCcompking Wednesday, June 13, 2007 7:37:19 AM

I sent my guess but it didn't say anything like "Message sent" or anything... I wonder if it went through... did you guys have the same experience?... did I do it right(?)...

ALF MURMANalfmurman Wednesday, June 13, 2007 11:36:28 AM

I think it will preform sing and dance widget hn the rain ! Glad Midsummer a Alf

MarianneManneS Wednesday, June 13, 2007 4:34:20 PM

You can always check your messages under the "Sent" folder.

Peppe Garibaldifleance1 Thursday, June 14, 2007 7:13:31 PM

I think Opera Mini will have Flash support. That's the big new feature. I'm pretty much sure about it.

**FLASH**

Dark FurieFurie Thursday, June 14, 2007 7:44:47 PM

sing A-ah he'll save everyone of us...

theoddbod Thursday, June 14, 2007 8:04:12 PM

lol

Ivanivan--p Saturday, June 16, 2007 11:49:30 PM

As I see, all photos describes features that already exists at OM:
iPod: anti-aliasing font & animated interface
camera: photoblog
Wii: means that we can use Opera almost at any device...
helmet: secured connection

babox Tuesday, June 19, 2007 10:58:06 AM

I had guessed it, but I sent another feature. I don't know why confused

DenisShulyaka Tuesday, June 19, 2007 11:27:09 AM

Did anybody win the prize?

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, June 19, 2007 11:44:29 AM

As the first person to send an entry, and getting it right, I think I'd have won... If I hadn't sent another entry with a second guess anyway. cry

MarianneManneS Tuesday, June 19, 2007 5:41:14 PM

We will come back with more info later. smile

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, June 19, 2007 6:42:30 PM

Aaargh! I just got logged in as someone else! Is this My Opera or it mixed with Dimension that's playing up?
