Opera Mobile 10.1 beta for Android!

We are excited to release Opera Mobile 10.1 beta for Android. Our outstanding Android developers in Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway, Poland, and China have been working overtime to bring you this release. Opera signature features like Speed Dials, Visual Tabs, Password Manager, Link, Turbo and many others are now available to Android users. Not to forget the legendary speed of the Opera Presto rendering engine.

Search for "Opera Mobile" in the Android Market, or download direct to your PC.

Read more on our web site. And if you are a developer, there is even more at dev.opera.com.

Share your feedback in our forums. We are looking forward to hearing from you!

And know that there is more in the pipeline. This is a first release and we prioritized having a stable base to start with. Over the next months we will add support for HTML5 Video and Flash, as well as upgrading to the latest Opera Presto core and thereby enabling standards like Application Cache and Web Storage. And we will focus on platform optimizations like Hardware Acceleration and JIT compilation which will further improve both performance and usability.

Known issues:
  • Incorrect fonts used for some Asian characters (Japanese not working)
  • Some compatibility issues with some Google services (working with Google on that)
  • Web fonts disabled

Opera Mobile vs Mobile Mini
As many of you know we also have Opera Mini available for Android OS. For more information about the difference between the two products, see this blog post and the specs on the product pages. Some of you will prefer one over the other. Others, like me, will want to have both. Both are free and available today for your Android OS phone so we encourage you to try them both for yourself.

Opera Mini 5.1 Beta for Series 60 is here!Android update

I see nearby elements (finger touch) was finally fixed and works as expected. That's a good one. You need to bring on/off into public settings.

Tomas Prochazkatprochazka Tuesday, November 9, 2010 8:57:54 AM

It is amazing fast! Great.

Only my phone was crash if I try enable Opera Link. Opera Link is most problematic part of all version of Opera :-( I don't know why. I already must create new Opera account because me old doesn't work.

When will be solved problems with some google services Opera will the best browser. For example google push different (uglier) version of www.google.com/reader/i to Opera and default browser. This is discrimination!

myregs Tuesday, November 9, 2010 9:02:18 AM

few things
- you need to have preset of nearby elements radius for different resolutions. 20px is ok for old screens with 0,15-0,20 px dot, but 0,09-0,11 px dot screens would needs around 30 px.
- blue link outline draws over nearby element option.
- same as ink in opera mini for android - interface is way too overscalled. lower toolbar needs to be slightly smaller, upper toolbar needs to be twice smaller.

Scrolling still can be a jerky in zoom mode. And loading speed sux in comparison with stock android, though is pretty good.

Don't care about video, need hardware accel and jit.

All in ask very good beta.

What do you mean by "loading speed"?

Tomas Prochazkatprochazka Tuesday, November 9, 2010 11:43:53 AM

Has someone problem with restarting device during use Opera Mobile?

klunatik Tuesday, November 9, 2010 12:48:36 PM

By the way, are there any maemo upgrades planned?

DWeXe Tuesday, November 9, 2010 12:51:46 PM

@Tomas Prochazka

no, I haven't

Spica 2.2 CM alpha7.2 (samdroid)

ClashCityRockerclashcityrocker Tuesday, November 9, 2010 12:51:56 PM

Had it quit to the desktop without warning or error on a few occasions. However on the whole VERY good.

Can't see a way to have it as my default system browser. Am I missing something? Shouldn't that be mentioned as a issue?

PaiTrakt Tuesday, November 9, 2010 1:16:24 PM

Crashes while starting up (I get to see the black screen with Opera Mobile before it crashes) on my stock HTC Desire 2.2, and I see some comments about the same in the market.

crashes after splashscreen... :'( LG GT540 2.1

Seems to be working fine on its own. Literally really, since it pushes everything else out of memory, using up to 100 megabytes it seems. On an HTC Legend (Android 2.1) the Sense UI is restarted when I leave Opera Mobile, causing it to shut down Opera Mobile. I guess memory use is one area of improvement.

jgergic Tuesday, November 9, 2010 4:39:01 PM

Same problem here: crashing after splash-screen straight to dashboard without any error message (Motorola Milestone, Android 2.1)

costalat Tuesday, November 9, 2010 5:05:19 PM

One more with crashing problems on sgs with 2.2

Tomas Prochazkatprochazka Tuesday, November 9, 2010 6:30:29 PM

For example on this page http://goo.gl/jKAwG doesn't work Text-wrap. When I zoom in I must horizontally scroll :-(

iamfromreallifeiFloriano Tuesday, November 9, 2010 6:56:05 PM

LG GT540, Android 2.1 here. Opera crashes at startup. No error is show, the app just quits.

Edward Veldmanedwardveldman Tuesday, November 9, 2010 8:36:33 PM

Crashes at startup, eats away free memory space, even after uninstalling :-(
HTC Desire, 2.2

myregs Wednesday, November 10, 2010 12:44:11 AM

scrolling bug from symbian and winmobile version still there, in android version as well. vkontakte is unusable because of it.

wai leongeim21048 Wednesday, November 10, 2010 4:13:16 AM

1.Text of UTF8/GBK encoding Chinese webpages become square in my Android Pad.
2. Work prefect with my HTC Tattoo ( CM6.1 Froyo Rom)

Tomas Prochazkatprochazka Wednesday, November 10, 2010 4:45:28 AM

I sad that Opera doesn't use any of Android advantage. For example sharing of page, doesn't allow to run youtube player on right url or any other app associated wit concrete URL. Also text selecting is not optimized for fingerprint too much.

Cutting Spoonhellspork Wednesday, November 10, 2010 6:40:52 AM

*head explodes* That's a long list of new features being promised. Great!

Pavel Studenýpavel.studeny Wednesday, November 10, 2010 4:12:38 PM

Thanks for your comments so far. We are already fixing some of the things you have complained about, such as crashes on startup on some devices, although we couldn't reproduce the crashes on all devices reported. We will publish updated installation packages throughout this week.

When it comes to page loading speed, Opera is about 1.5-2x faster than the native browser, depending on a device. Opera Turbo would make the loading speed even faster.

On the other hand, we don't plan to focus on finger-touch at the moment. We believe that pinch-zoom makes it easy to click particular links and finger-touch would only slow the navigation down. We may have a look at finger-touch later, though, if the current navigation proved to be difficult.

As written in post, this will be hopefully fixed soon.

That's because it's a page changed by google to XHTML Mobile 1.0.
Will look into it.

Opera Mobile 10.1 beta, what's your experience?

LG GT540 v1.6

For me it installed fine and runs fine, but have the following problems, don't know whether it's my lack of know-how or Opera 10.1 beta for Android just isn't behaving on LG GT540 :

1. I can put in an URL but don't see or know how to make it "GO", no go button.

2. When I try to edit "Start Page" , long press on any one of he squares brings up -Copy and Edit, but does not allow me to select either of them.

Anybody running it without these problems, please let me know.

Long time Opera desktop user and Opera mini friend

still crashes on startup... LG GT540 2.1

Simon RussellMrLOONY Friday, November 12, 2010 5:27:56 AM

must be something strange going on with LG GT540 running 2.1. I've got the same phone, but running 1.6, and it's working well. . . so maybe I'll not upgrade to available 2.1 yet lol.

linkpeter Friday, November 12, 2010 6:51:00 PM

Look thanks everyone at opera, I've just moved from symbian to android, almost to the day ( it seems ) that opera mobile released an android ver. Yay..I picked both mini and mobile of the android market site, decided to go with mobile as it seem sufficiently stable, only crashed once in a week, and that could have been some other problem. I cant emphasize enough how great it was being able to sync (flawlessly ) using opera link all my book-marks and stuff over to the new phone, it is such a big big incentive to use it. I am using a HUAWEI U8150 Android 2.2, which I understand is a pretty basic, spec phone, but is a totally clean android build. So there you are, the browser is just fantastic, Oh and I moved it to the micro card and am running it from there ( thanks for that option too )as Froyo 2.2 now allows that, to free up phone memory All you guys are just clever little beavers and I would be happy to pay for the program.

Does the same for me. :/
Was really looking forward to using this too...

ilborg Saturday, February 12, 2011 3:42:18 PM

Found out that opera mobile was causing 1.5 minutes slower boot time to my galaxy spica(with cyanogenmod). Delay seemed to be from loading some opera mobile shared libraries. Just if you see that your phone boots up slowly, check with android debugger that if it's from this issue.

I know that my setup is not really good focus for development, but I suppose that issue could cause problems with other phones too.

Otherwise, opera mobile is quite nicely featured browser and nowadays browser coming with android is something that you would want to avoid as it's the first browser that would be attacked. With my phone the only problem with opera mobile is the slowness and memory consumption(spica has really limited memory), which is easily explained by that the opera mobile is still in beta stage and many other android phones really has much more memory.
