Would I be a Penguin?
a poem by Elly

If I had wings would I fly,
or would I be like a penguin,
as it is I can only wish and sigh,
looking up at the fine, big sky
let my imagination give it a try
even when I go in.

In my mind, I fly so high
the world below is tiny
then again, if I were like a penguin
the sea is what I would fly in
just thinking about it makes me grin
water and ice sparkling and shiny.

elly, the senses you bring to this write are enjoyable -- if i were a able to fly, i think being in the ocean would be most satisifing too!

Maybe we all have our own niche for "flying" in? After all, penguins can swim beyond the comprehension of any other bird.

Thanks, 1bb -- I forgot your real name! Your poems are so heartfelt. So happy you enjoyed this.

Hya, Adele. Penguins are cool. When I lived in Chicago and didn't have air conditioning, when it was hot I went to the zoo with my son in his stroller and we frequented the Lincoln Park Penguin House. So much fun. My baby and I were cool and entertained. The baby also loved seeing the baby pigmy hippo. It swam up and down, repetitively. My son would just laugh and laugh at these animals.

Viewing the penguin documentaries on Discovery, it is so cool how they swim so fast and jump very high out of the water onto the ice!

My niche for flying would be when I sail my small boat and it is very windy and fun. Haven't done so in a while, I miss it. Also when I pedal about on my bike, which I also miss doing.

Soon, I will be biking again, though, my ankles are up to it

I really want to go to Antarctica to see penguins in the wild...it's so expensive though :insane:

Have fun with the bike! :D

I saw a documentary about an Antarctic penguin trip -- cable is so near to actually being there.

my mother seems to think that i like penguins very much .... she always sends me penguin stuff -- i've even got pajamas with penguins on them! maybe the bird has enough coat to keep it warm, but i'd be very cold in their environment. i like the temps to be around those of a tropical version. i am looking forward to temps around sixty rather than one hundred!

ah elly, sailing and biking -- those were the days (long gone from my life), when freedom comes from natural feelings. i hope you can begin those activities soon. i'll bet your child has the same callings as you do!

My children love to sail and bike.

That is funny about your mom, 1bb. Are there tropical penguins? I think some are on the tip of Southern Africa and the southwestern bottom. ?

my family knows me better (sometimes) than i know myself .... my brother sends me unicorn stuff and says it is because i am one-of-a-kind person -- i think that is what a penguin is too. you are correct the penguin species thrives in a variety of climates not just the colder regions. if we humans didn't consume so much of the resouces here, i think we'd have penguins living along the gulf of mexico!
