"Hotter than I should be"
Thursday, 28. June 2007, 15:48:58
Our Earth is getting hotter. In the U.S. alone, scientists estimate that our average temperature could get up to 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit warmer by the year 2051. Without action, climate change will cause the extinction of countless species and destroy some of the world's most precious ecosystems.
"In 6 to 10 years we are going to see changes in our climate system that we won't be able to fix," warns Dr. Lara Hansen, WWF's chief climate scientist. "This is a massive, urgent issue, and we need to have the foresight to make changes before it's too late."
Global warming is causing pervasive environmental damage. Forests are enduring unprecedented droughts, coral reef systems are bleaching, and glaciers--from Glacier National Park in the U.S. to the world's highest in the Eastern Himalayas--are receding. Rising sea levels are threatening low-lying islands and river deltas, putting millions of people at risk, and warming temperatures are resulting in the spread of infectious diseases.
The good news is that we have the power to address the root causes of climate change and limit its impact on the planet. As the world's conservation leader, WWF is working around the globe to achieve the greatest impact on climate change and biodiversity conservation. But we can't do it alone--we need your support to help slow global warming and reduce its negative impact.
WWF is working to stop climate change by providing cutting-edge science, championing policies to reduce carbon emissions and mobilizing businesses to drive new and innovative solutions.
