Yet another reason to give up TV

You can quibble with the figures about the actual costs of equipment etc., but the point that Jeffrey Strain makes about advertising is very pertinent. Those ads do work, and they will make you buy stuff that you would otherwise go without.
So glad I gave it up!

I gave it up myself a few years ago because I just wasn't interested in anything that was on. It wasn't until my mind cleared that I saw exactly how much the ad-machine can effectively set a standard of living despite the viewers resistance to the idea. The article was all the more interesting because it gives concrete reasons why your life might be better off by not owning one (along with the peripherals) without suggesting that you might be brainwashed if you do.
Anyway, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, but I'll definitely try this nuts-and-bolts approach the next time I tell someone I don't even own a TV and they look at me like I have a live raccoon on my head.
Later!

Unless you use Firefox as browser - if it´s not blasphemy to mention that on an Opera blog?

Yes, Allan, the internet is stuffed with ads but I find them to much more on the level of magazine ads. They lack the sheer power of a TV ad because they are rarely the subject of your entire focus. I also like Firefox's abilities, but you don't even need them if you use a hosts file modification that effective blocks ads to all your browsers.
