Essentially the Only One

by Richard

Turbulence ahead?

, , ,

I found out today that the grant I was relying on to pay next year's salary was not funded.

This does not mean I am out of a job. There are alternative funding streams in my department, but what it does mean is that the project we were hoping to start next year has been cancelled.

This means I will be doing something else. Just what, I do not know yet.

Another element of uncertainty in an already uncertain world!

WEll, I'm glad you are certain of employment, at least.

Richard 18. November 2008, 02:47

So I have been assured. Of course, I will feel happier once I actually know what we plan to do and a little flesh is added to the assurance!

Matthew 18. November 2008, 05:03

Yeah. I had some of those assurances before I was told that there were no assurances for me, aside from needing to look for a job.

Stardancer 18. November 2008, 05:17

Hoping for the best for you, Richard.

(And you, too, Matthew.)

Allan 18. November 2008, 08:14

Years back people who got employed could normally look forward to a lifetime of secure employment.

That's long time ago indeed.

My line of work, together with most other's, including yours apparently, is characterized with constant uncertainty instead.

That's just a fact of life we'll have to cope with.

Richard 18. November 2008, 23:34

Thanks for you good wishes, Stardancer.

Matt, a story like yours is precisely what I am worried about! That sucks.

Allan, yes, we have to cope. Times have not changed for the better for the average working person. :frown:

Angeliki 19. November 2008, 00:18

Richard,
not knowing it is the hardest period of all! I hope you use your always optimistic thinking and just hope for the best...You have my best wishes for better news in the near future

You too Matt,
I hope I wake up in the morning and I see a notice for a new post with the title:
"I found the job of my dreams !!! " and I hope it happens very soon

Richard 19. November 2008, 00:38

Thank you very much, Angeliki!:smile::smile:

Naomi 19. November 2008, 19:09

Richard, sorry to hear that.

Edward Piercy 19. November 2008, 20:35

Not much I can add to all these comments and good wishes. Except perhaps to say that I normally like a few diced turbulents in my salad, along with peas and cheese.

Naomi 21. November 2008, 16:08

Richard 21. November 2008, 16:15

 Thanks for your good wishes and recipes.

Naomi 21. November 2008, 16:24

Have you guys noticed that you can't get back to your "news" if you are on someone else's blog? awww

Richard 21. November 2008, 17:41

I hadn't but I have now thanks to you, Naomi. I guess it doesn't mean that much to me if I haven't missed it so far.

Naomi 21. November 2008, 17:46

It's driving me nuts since I look at my "news" to see what posts I've been missing much more often than check my "inbox."

Richard 21. November 2008, 17:49

Ah ha - I can see how that would be. I don't usually check my news until I return to own blog, so I guess that's why I'm not missing it much.

Naomi 21. November 2008, 18:11

Working on my own site makes me very sensitive/picky to navigation issues. I am astounded at how many sites are overly difficult to navigate. Hoping Opera fixes this.

Matthew 21. November 2008, 18:54

I've noticed. It was that way before, but that doesn't excuse the fact that now your messages follow you around, but you still can't see your news without an extra click or two. Booo!

Edward Piercy 21. November 2008, 19:31

I can't upload photos in a post or access my FILES folder. Which essentially shuts me down from blogging. To which some might shout "Hurrah!" But for me, not so good.

Don't you just love these wonderful new "improvements?"

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Matthew 21. November 2008, 19:42

Hmmmmmm... I haven't tried - that feature was turned off for a while, but I thought they had resolved it.

Angeliki 22. November 2008, 00:13

Naomi,
previously
we only could see our news if we were in an Opera post i.e. MOTW or Opera Home page news posts,
in reality it is not a great change there,
what I don't like is seeing in the main page who added whom as a friend...
if there is a function to keep our friends list private
why everybody can see now who I did add in it ???
(it is at the "latest activity"area.

Ed,
you might need to report it....it was a post on
two days ago that urged members to report what
still doesn't work in their posts

Naomi 24. November 2008, 19:03

Matt, I used to be able to get right back into either messages or news right from anyone else's blog & now I can only get back into messages. I normally use Firefox. What were you using? Weird. :left:

Matthew 24. November 2008, 19:54

Opera. I used to be able to get to news by going to my "About" page from teh drop down menu. I can still do that. I could go to mail from there, too. Now, mail is moved out (as it shuold be), but News is just as hidden than it was.
