Essentially the Only One

Forest Park at lunchtime

, , ,

I spent a happy hour this lunchtime wandering around Forest Park.

It was a very cold day, but bright and clear and the sun was warming. I felt most refreshed by the stroll.

Astonishingly, both the fountains and the boat rental were operating normally. I would have expected them to close down in the cold weather, but evidently it's not quite cold enough. Two women were having a very happy time in a paddle boat. Singing at full volume and splashing through the otherwise deserted canals that run through the park.

The sun was already low. It gave the fountain water a lovely luminosity.

Yesterday was depressing? Weeellll...Cold Saturday

Forest Park, and it's "amenities" - free zoo, museums - has to be one of the better urban green spaces in the US?

I think it's fabulous. One of the world's best kept secrets!

Once I was visiting my brother and his girlfriend. We went to the musem - City museum, I think, though it may have been the State Museum (I don't remember which is there, though i remember looking at a spectacular collection of very old maps of the City) - on a 105 degree day. Afterwards, quite late in the afternoon or early in the evening, we sat on the hill in front of the museum eating watermelon that the GF had thoughtfully packed in a cooler before we left home earlier in the day. All of a sudden, racing along on both sides of us, were drunks in four golf carts yelling "playing through!" and taking all sorts of precarious chances! We were easily 100 meters from the golf course. We laughed and laughed, and thanked the heavens that we were neither beaned by errant golf balls nor flattened by drunks in golf carts.

 That must have been hilarious! Lots of characters in Forest Park!

I'd love to be on that paddle boat.

They were having a very good time! I think a few beers had gone down beforehand at the boathouse restaurant.

That's a nice little park! And it looks like you got the timing on the fountain just right.
