Essentially the Only One

by Richard

An unexpected adventure

, , , , , ,

An idyllic country scene. See Ruth in her canoe, paddling up the placid waters of the Creston Wildlife Area. "See you in 90 minutes", she says as she sets off at 5 p.m.

It's 8 p.m. I'm in Don Taylor's West Creston house, giving a missing person report to the RCMP while Don, a member of the West Creston Volunteer Fire Dept. is rounding up about 20 members to help comb the by-now darkening wetlands. My son David is pacing up and down and I'm giving my birthdate, Ruth's birthdate and all those other little details that emergency service dispatchers require.

9.20 p.m. I'm standing by the fire engine shed of the West Creston Volunteer Fire Dept. as men and women, equipped with radios and flashlights, prepare to search the landscape. Then a call comes in from Constable Jones of the RCMP that he found Ruth. Having emerged shoe-less and canoe-less from the swamp, she waited at the Wildlife Interpretive Center until Constable Jones found her.

Much relief all round. Profuse thanks from me to all I could thank personally, and many thanks are due to Linda who was the first person in the area I found after I become seriously worried about Ruth's absence. A local bird expert and thoroughly knowledgeable in the local landscape, she realised that, with the failing light, the professionals needed to be called in. She also informed me that Ruth's canoe route was essentially unnavigable, and thus it turned out to be. The canoe remains beached in the wetland, along with Ruth's shoes.

Well, all's well that end's well. But it made for a very anxious evening for me and David.

Wow, very scary. Thank goodness it ended well.

musickna 11. July 2009, 05:36

Thank you, San. Yes, it was scary. I was extremely relieved when she finally emerged!!

What happened? Or is that your next post? Thank God she was unharmed. That must have been a stomach-wrenching time while you were waiting.

musickna 11. July 2009, 05:57

She managed to get a good way along, but found herself in a dead end. Tired, she abandoned the canoe, and traveled cross-country to the Interpretive Center.

Yes, it was stomach-wrenching!

Thank God Ruth is ok. I'm sorry you and David got such a bad scare. How is Ruth doing now? I hope she's ok.
Take care.

An adventure, for sure, that you didn't count on.:eyes:

Oh WOW what a scare for both of you. You must have been so worried.

If I'd been Ruth, I'd have been scared to death to walk barefoot through unfamiliar territory and I'd be looking over my shoulder constantly for animals. I like to think I am outdoorsy but I am not at all. So glad she found her way to safety.

Stardancer 11. July 2009, 07:23

I'm very glad that Ruth is well and safe, and that you and David have her back with you.

Oh, dear. What an "adventure".

I bet she was very much missed during those few hours. Can't tell you how glad I am knowing the outcome of all this.

The search and rescue volunteers everywhere are genuine heroes and deserve more appreciation from all of us!

That is so true, David. I was deeply impressed by the dedication and professionalism of the local Creston people who helped us.

Thank you, too, Carol, Pam, Star, Linda, Allan & San for your sympathies and good wishes. Ruth is fine!

Thanks for your good wishes everyone. I was very relieved to see RCMP Constable Jones drive up, but much more relieved when Richard and David finally arrived (after the constable radioed in that I was found). The idea that they were worrying was really the only scary thing about my adventure. The only wildlife I saw was a deer jumping into the water, and a lot of cows (ok, the one with long horns blocking the path was scary, but singing "Alice's Restaurant" and clapping my hands convinced it to move out of the way).I ruefully mentioned to Constable Jones that this seems to happen to me every year (last year I was two hours late home from my hike in the highlands, and the year before I was late home from a canoe trip into the wilds of northern ontario) and he suggested I need a gps with a walkie/talkie function. The trouble is, I'd be likely to forget to take it with me. That's why our son wants it implanted as a chip in my brain.

"...singing "Alice's Restaurant" and clapping my hands convinced it to move out of the way)."

 That is priceless!

I don't know if there are snakes, bears or mountain lions where you were, but that is what I would have been terrified of coming across. Especially bears!

Dacotah 11. July 2009, 20:04

Hi Richard, I'm glad you are all ok now.

Stardancer 11. July 2009, 21:12

Very glad that you're ok, Ruth.

edwardpiercy 11. July 2009, 23:23

I guess there's a very narrow line between "tragedy" and "an adventure to tell for decades", yeah? I'm seriously glad it was the later. I hope that Ruth is by now all dried out and has had some hot cocoa.

And I guess it still holds true about the RCMP -- they always get their man/woman.

musickna 11. July 2009, 23:38

 Yes, they do! The constable was clearly very pleased to have found her!

noah counte 14. July 2009, 02:06

Thank heavens that turned out well. "Adventure" is a euphemism for "pant staining stressful evening," isn't it?

musickna 14. July 2009, 05:26

 Yes it is, Matt!
