Essentially the Only One

Between summer and autumn

, , ,

Was today the pivot between summer and autumn in St. Louis? Walking through Forest Park at midday, it certainly felt that way.

There were wildflowers blooming all around me, butterflies and grasshoppers too, and a warm sun in a bright blue sky swiftly generated a sense of overheating under my jacket and sweatshirt.

Everything looked very green, yet not wholly so. One or two trees were turning to yellow, and the faintest tint of autumn color brushed others. The grasses in particular revealed a rich palette of greens, yellows, browns and reds. Almost everything quivered with the vibrancy of summer, yet in a few days it will all turn. Then we'll see the bright oranges and reds, but today I was enjoying the subtleties before that change. Something I have not put much mind to in the past. I am glad I did so today.

Lovely photos, Richard. I like the colors of autumn, but the season is not one of my favorites. It makes me sad to see the winding down scenes, where things die off and prepare for winter's hibernation.

Makes me want to hibernate, too.

Beautiful photos Richard.

Star, those words came out of my brain. I feel exactly like that. Always feel sad when the green starts going and the flowers cease blooming. Right now, here, the Lycoris are blooming and the Golden Rod. The Crape Myrtles have almost ceased their blooming for the year. I am already dreading the changing weather. Been coughing a lot for past week or so.

I understand the hibernation urge, alright - especially with the shortening days! Still, I do love autumn myself. For the moderating temperature, the colors and the shadows from the lowering sun.

I have the tendency to withdraw from October 31 through February. It's not quite hibernation, but I call it that. The fall and winter holidays depress me, coupled with the winding down I mentioned.

I'm finding that I'm looking forward just a bit to Christmas this year though, now that I'm in my own home and not renting anymore. It'll be the first time since 2000 that I will have a Christmas tree--or even a place for one.

Maybe I won't feel such a need to hibernate this winter.

 Good for Edward!

With grey skies and torrential rain, not to mention possible frost conditions over the weekend, autmer has definitely turned into autumn now!

Glad you like the pics as well, Isabel.
