No longer the Only One

The Little Church on The Prairie

, , ,

St. John's Catholic Church, Ringling, Montana.

Geoff and I stopped here briefly on our way to the Crazy mountains in early August. This beautiful historic church stands just outside the almost ghost town of Ringling, Montana. It was good see that some effort is being made to restore it. I looked up a web entry for Ringling that gives a little history - yes, this Ringling was founded by of John T. Ringling of the Ringling Brothers Circus - but for a church that is "One of the most photographed historic churches" an utterly dismal photograph of the building. What were they thinking?

And here's the prairie!Utterly gorgeous - although I appreciate it might be a bit too bleak for some tastes.

I was listening to one of the (many) obscurities in my overlarge collection while putting this post together. An LP transcription from a record I picked up in a 1970s cut-out bin, Deke Leonard's "Kamikaze". If you have not heard of either the record or artist you are hardly alone. Leonard was a guitarist in the Welsh sometimes prog, sometimes acid rock, band Man who are hardly a household name these days either.

Anyway, "Kamikaze" while hardly a masterpiece, is a moderately entertainingly slice of Americanophilic British rock of the early 1970s before punk came along and swept all this music under the rug. Living here in the real thing, as it were, I find these slightly off-kilter attempts to appropriate an American feel are both quaint and rather charming. Here's another and more detailed take on the record from another Brit ex-pat living in the Midwest.

no I think the photograph is great up And you were really lucky with those clouds directing the gaze right back to the building.

EDIT: Took awhile to find the music you were talking about but finally found it up Well, 'Man' or 'Iceberg' surely did not land to Finland ever. Sounds very typical progressive bigsmile

another nice trip you've had, Richard! summer is great for that, isn't it? easier to hike and get around than what lays in store in a few months- at least headed toward Montana, that is. a refreshing looking church, the setting suits it perfectly- nice and open. the clouds cooperated, too. amazing it still looks like the middle of nowhere. and how peaceful and beautiful nowhere looks to be...

Thanks Sami! smile The dismal photograph is on the Ringling website. You can hardly see the church building there!

Thank you, Jill - it was a great trip indeed. I still have hundreds of photos to go through. There are going to be little posts like this one for a while yet!

Speaking only of it as a photo of the church, yes, it's a dismal failure. It is reminiscent of those old photos that one still occasionally sees, of little Johnny in his best bib and tucker, standing 30' from the camera, in front of the back stairways of a large apartment building which are not sufficiently out of focus. Sigh!
But as a land/cloudscape, it is really quite nice ... it might have been better to leave the church out, however. LOL

I certainly agree with that! If the photo had been named 'Prairie around Ringling' I would have said nice photo, too!

"Geoff and I stopped here briefly on our way to the Crazy mountains".

LMAO. Cant's help it -- the Crazy mountains. "You don't have to be crazy to go to the Crazy mountains -- but it helps!" p

I went to the Superstition mountains -- somehow I didn't feel quite right about them, a funny feeling -- know what I mean? p

And oh...

Holy cripe! I believe that!

Boy this post I had to do in blocks.

Yeah, what's with that little tiny photo of the church anyway? I think you should get a job with that Montana Film Office.

Part 3

Did listen to Man video embedded in that one site. I never heard of them either. Probably too far to the metal side for me in those days.

Well I could still feather my hair and push my jacket sleeves up for her concert.

Of course I don't really have that much hair to feather these days. p
