What an absurd overreaction of the McCain campaign to the press coverage of the Sarah Palin Vice-Presidential pick.

Politics is a dirty game, enter it and be prepared to see the mud flung, whoever you are. Blaming the free press is an old trick of authoritarians. You can rebutt and deny, but attacking journalists for simply doing their job raises more questions than it answers.

A lively discussion on the bus ride home this evening revealed a widespread dismay and cynicism at McCain's choice, even from those inclined to give Mrs. Palin a chance. Perhaps her speech to the Convention tonight will clarify things, but I suspect that every word she utters will have been calculated precisely to convey an image. What she is really is we don't know, but it is the job of the press to push and find out. Hers is simply too important a potential job to give her a free pass.
