No longer the Only One

Sunday Evening

,

There is no time of the week that matches Sunday evening for its unique blend of melancholy, tense expectation, clock watching, regret for the weekend past, contemplation of the work week to come, and longing for the weekend to come.

I've had this feeling since I started going to school as a youngster, and it has never varied very much, be it through college and jobs, both bad and good. You would think that after four decades of looking at Monday coming up over the horizon, the sensation would moderate - or even disappear. But it hasn't.

It does vanish during a vacation - and that's as good a reason as any for taking one - and I am sure that when retirement comes, I can say goodbye to this Sunday evening mood.

I don't think I'll miss it.
