Working with Opera - An insight!

Opera being the first company of my career will always be cherished . This company taught me technology , "how to code", and more over few essential lessons of life .
It all started in march 2008, when i contacted opera to come to our college for campus placements . It was very difficult for me as a student co-ordinator to persuade opera to come to our campus for recruitment drive , but any how it paid off well in the end . On 13th of August Opera came to our campus and had a selection procedure till 14th and selected 6 students for their Chandigarh office and luckily i was one of them
While coming to chandigarh for joining on 21st of jan(2009), i was taken by few hunches at the back of mind like , what would be work culture and whether i would be able to bridge the gap of a working professional and a lazy college bump. For this , before arriving there i had gathered some valuable informations available online regarding company culture and all . Even though i had few other campus offers , i chose to join Opera. First day was ordinary , as we(me and saif) have to rush for house hunting:knight: .
Talking about opera india , we had some cool:up: people working there. Opera has a great work culture , it was nothing related to opera but more over it was due some cool and energetic people working out in a young team. Some of moments i enjoyed - cricket after office hours (sometime in office too:p ), common fund , jalebis and samosas during rain , Friday movies, maggi, Sweden trip ,Swine flu, hanging out in IT Park etc and many more. Apart from these fun @ opera, as a fresher we learnt a lot specially from my senior colleague working out there. We were noob when we joined and with time we were able to see difference in ourselves as a professional. Everything was going on smoothly until i was off for my Holi vacation around last week of february after a plethora of sleepless nights and zero weekends to release some of our standalone widget with opera 10.50 on 1st of march 2010.
This was the time when we were developing as wonderful team . suddenly, on 3rd March 2010 we got a message before lunch from our Big Bosses - "We are shutting down Chandigarh office" . Opera was restructured and dev team from India was unable to find any place among structured Opera. We were riding high on our release but at that moment everything was numb for a moment and had no clue what was happening as no one has imagined this decision from Opera. Everyone in meeting room broke there silence with a decent applaud/clap for the decision. More to the surprise opera India had recently shifted to its new office in IT Park, with lots of space and new furniture bought for office. We had brand new office which we had witnessed building in front of our eyes. This was like we were in condition which we haven't thought of in our rarest of black notorious dream as well. It was hardly few min , after which we started with our jokes , fun and talks as normal . But i would like to admit this fact that may be we were sad with the decision which suddenly popped up , but somewhere everyone felt that this marked a better beginning for us.
Few general questions which still hunts me is why opera being such a great company with such wonderful products was forced to close it India office(although still some other dept people work from home). As a young geek i have witnessed almost all the major companies in Internet industry have there offices in india, take any example . Most of the development of top companies is done in India .Some MNC are expanding like anything seeing the potential market in India, maybe opera's top notch thought India -the land of rising internet market was not a place for them for development of products . Being a noob , i have no idea whether this was good decision or bad but decision was made and we had to follow .
We moved ahead ! there was lots of hicupps after this, it was undoubtedly one of most hard faced part of life. It has been almost 8-9 months to the incidence but still feels like it was yesterday only. Opera being the first company of my career will always be cherished . This company taught me technology , "how to code", and more over few essential lessons of life .
