My Family Moves to India

An American family moves to Chennai

Palace #3

THE palace, the Ambas Villas, aka the "Mysore Palace".

Saving the best for last, here are our photos of the main Mysore Palace. This complex was completed in 1912 after the original palace, made entirely of carved sandalwood, burned. The Maharajah of the times enlisted an Irish architect, Henry Irwin, to meld Indian and European-style buildings into one magnificent example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Many of the structural details were imported from Europe. As most palaces are, it was awe-inspiring but a bit overdone. Personally I think that the architecture would have been enhanced by less ornate carvings, tile work, silver doors, etc. etc. etc. Well worth the visit, though.

Sadly they do not allow shoes or cameras inside the palace building, so we do not have photos of the interior.

Camel and elephant rides are available on the palace grounds - do you think that little Kazak warrior looks a little nervous?
