Nkanddabwe mine workers strike. By Tovin Ngombe in Sinazongwe
Fri 04 Dec. 2009, 04:00

NKANDDABWE Chinese Collum Coal Mine (CCM) workers have gone on strike demanding improved conditions of service and safety at the mine.
Nkanddabwe ward councillor Partson Manguje and CCM director Xu Zian Rui disclosed the development to ZANIS that the workers from shaft two and three blocked the road leading to the mine and threw stones at the Chinese managers.
Mangunje said quick action by Sinazeze police officers saved the situation as they managed to disperse the crowd.
He said it was pathetic that workers were getting salaries ranging from K200,000 to K500,000 per month [1 Euro = ca. 7 ZMK, 100 ZMK = ca. > 14 Euro).
Mangunje further noted that the slave wages being given by the mine had incensed the workers who were unable to feed their families.
He also alleged that shaft two and three managers were employing boys who were about 12 years old to be operating underground.
Mangunje said the scenario was against the laws of the country and against the International Labour Organisation (ILO) principles of child labour.
And Xu said the situation at the mine was dangerous as 300 miners opened the doors and entered the Chinese premises to fight them.
Xu said about 10 people were injured and alleged that the aim of the workers was to kill the Chinese managers.
He said management was ready to negotiate with the workers and reach an agreement that was satisfying to them rather than resorting to violence.
Xu said without the police, lives would have been lost as a result of the protest.
He noted that the failure to increase the workersí salaries by management had been as a result of poor markets as few customers were buying coal being produced by the company.
Xu said once the situation improved, workersí salaries would be adjusted upwards as the company currently operated at Zero profit.

Perhaps the Chinese, the grand mothers of all inventions,
manage their workers that way: a bit dull?
Coal consumption in Billions of tons of oil equivalent. ›Land‹ (plur. Länder) in German means country, but it is not correct to write ›…länder‹ as in the graphic. State(s) [German: Staat(en)] is the appropriate term, even in some respect it is common to speak of countries meaning states. Members of the OECD are states, and ›Länder‹ describes the respective territory where the consumption takes place. Neither the state nor the territory (country) are the consumers. Coal consumption: bulk consumer China, USA, India Übrige Welt (rest of the world) See also: www.worldcoal.org and/or www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/ieo/
