Firstly, I download the binaries by using apt-get. As normal I get the "stable" package which is not the latest version. Besides install at my personal pc, I install it at my test server at my lab too. My test server is using centos 4, which I able to download the latest ntop rpm and installed. By comparing ntop 3.2 and the "stable" version, I decided to compile it at my personal pc. Compiling ntop can consider very easy and guided, it will stop while it detects leak of dependencies files and ask you to download the dependencies.
After setting up, my Network Load Statistics is not displayed, trying to find solution at the homepage www.ntop.org but failed, ntop seems to have narrow documentation, which I spend few hours and finally it works. I am not sure is it the proper way of doing it. So I consider it as workaround, to work around check for plugin -> round robin database -> configure. The problem of Network load statistics is not displayed because the needed files could not be created. Check the RRD file path, make sure that rrd folder is exist and chmod 777 it.
Looks like MRTG huh? but ntop is more than that.
