Installing the Theme Files on Your Blog
Sunday, 25. December 2005, 22:51:16
Here is a quick tutorial on how to take the graphic images and stylesheet for each theme and use them on your own blog.
I highly recommend that you go ahead and download the zip sets for each one. You will need Winzip to unzip the files (Windows XP and 2000 natively support the *.zip extension so you can get by without downloading Winzip unless you have an older Windows machine). Mac peeps help me out here? Do I need to provide a tarball or something else?
Setting Up The Template
Go to the Preferences link at the top. Choose Web Page Layout. Be sure you choose the second template (Island). (The stylesheets for all of the themes offered here is based on that template; so use any other at your own risk!)

Uploading the Images
The next step is to get the image files from your hard drive to the Opera Server. So, again, in Preferences, choose My files.

You should see a screen very similar to the one below.

Note first there is a file called user.css. This is the default stylesheet for whatever template you have chosen. Opera looks there to see if there are any customized styles. If there aren't, it uses the default style for the template you have chosen. That is why it is very important to choose the second (Island) template for my themes because my custom stylesheet is based on that template's styles.
Note also there is a subfolder called /files. This is where you will upload any images you want to use with your design. Once you've uploaded all the images, you just need to make some minor adjustments to the stylesheet.
Preparing the Stylesheet for Use
There is no magic code that will automatically insert your user id into the stylesheet. If there were, it would make designers' lives much easier. So the stylesheets that you download from here will have the following paths:
The only thing you will need to change is "mytestbed". Change that to your username. For example, if your Opera blog is at my.opera.com/operafan, then you need to replace "mytestbed" with "operafan" in the stylesheet. Once you've done that, you are good to go. Use Notepad, WordPad, or your favorite HTML editor (NOT Word) to make the changes to the stylesheet. Be sure to save your changes.
Instead of uploading the stylesheet, you will need to copy and paste its contents into the custom stylesheet text area. Go to Preferences, then choose Web Page Layout. Then click the link "custom style sheet".

You'll see a text box. It is probably empty. If it is not, delete its contents. Then replace them with the contents of your edited stylesheet.
Voila. Instant new look for your Opera blog. Feel free to send me an email or ICQ at 32626429 if you have any questions!
