Apple is the new Microsoft, again

Microsoft has been bashed several times for anti-competitive behaviour, by trying to tout their own products over those of their competitors. Now it seems that Apple, in their trying to copy Microsoft’s success, is doing the same.

Håvard writes that Apple is blocking Opera Mini for the Iphone from entering their Application Store, since it competes with Safari. Apparently Apple doesn’t like competing software, just like how they don’t like competing hardware.

Another reason not to buy an Iphone, I guess. Not that I was going to, anyway. I was considering the Xperia, but it seems not to be compatible with the Sony Ericsson accessories I have, and I don’t feel like buying yet another set of chargers, docking stations and headsets. So I am stuck with my trusty ol’ P990i, which does run the latest Opera Mini, even if the latest Opera Mobile beta doesn’t work on it. :frown:

Apple is the new Microsoft?

I was going to write something here about how Apple incorrectly claims that Psystar is “stealing” their intellectual property by installing it on their Mac clones, but examining the English news sources seems to indicate that they are not saying “stealing”, but instead that they are “misappropriating” it.

I haven’t got my handy dictionary here, but Mirriam-Webster on-line seems to indicate that “misappropriating” is just “like” theft, not actual theft. But Psystar weren’t stealing anything anyway, they were buying Mac OS X copies legally from Apple, and installing it on their computers. That the Apple EULA has some bogus clauses like that you are not allowed to install it on hardware that does not bear the Apple logo, is about as bogus as the Microsoft EULAs that claim that you are not to install the software under emulation (I believe to recall that, at least for a while, you were not allowed by the EULA to install Internet Explorer on WINE).

That is of course bogus. Once you have bought the software, the one who sold it to you can’t restrict what you are doing with it. They can stop you from installing it on “unregistered” hardware just as little as they can stop you from hanging the CD on a wall to make a clock from it (hmm, I wonder where my Internet Explorer 3 wall clock ended up after my last move?).

Apple, please stop playing Microsoft. Rise above it.

Iphone 3G

Seems that the Iphone is finally getting an update to bring it to the 21st century, with 3G support and such, and it is coming to Scandinavia. I have previously not been very impressed with it, due to its lack of standard features. This update does make it a bit better, and with the SDK and App Store, it means that there hopefully will be third-party programs that can fix up a lot of the things missing from it.

I haven’t seen the full specifications for the new Iphone yet. But it does indeed sound a lot more interesting now. It will be interesting to see what the response from smartphone giants Sony Ericsson and Nokia will be.

Update: Seems it is still lacking a lot of necessary functionality. Too bad.

Apparently TeliaSonera is taking Iphone to Scandinavia (in Norway through subsidiary NetCom). Unless it is a major upgrade to the one that is released elsewhere, I would say it is too little, too late. I can’t personally see why anyone would want an Iphone with its current specifications. It does look good, yes, but who really cares?

Patents were invented for a reason, to share your inventions with others, with the given benefit of giving the inventor the sole right, for a short period, to produce, or decide who will produce, the invention. As Opera’s Charles McCathieNevile writes, this doesn’t work for software. Patenting ideas is bad. The Patent Troll Tracker blog was started to keep track of patent trolls like Ray Niro, who says he has the sole right to decide who can post a JPEG image on a web site. He recently posted a bounty of five thousand dollars to reveal the identity of the owner of the blog, and succeeded.

In other recent pathetic patent news, Apple was sued by another patent troll who claims to have invented the idea to connect caller identification with a phone book. If that’s not an obvious invention, I don’t know what is. Fortunately, the patent should expire soon.

Did I mention that software patents are silly? I think I did. They are.
