10.5 Christmas (pre-)alpha

,

Huib today writes “As a Christmas present, we’re happy to share all the goodies of Opera 10.5 with Presto 2.5 with you in an early pre-alpha release” in the desktop team’s blog. The build is available in Windows and Mac OS flavours from labs.opera.com. Unfortunately no Linux or Unix version this time.

The new JavaScript engine is blazingly fast. I normally don’t surf very JavaScript-heavy pages, but even on “normal” pages, the increase in speed is noticable.

The screenshot on the right shows it running under Wine, under real Windows it runs without even a title bar. I do not particularly care for the “minimalistic” user interface, but removing everything seems to be the current hype, and we just have to live with until sanity again prevails.

Fortunately, re-enabling the menu bar is simple (click the red “O” button and select “Show Menu Bar”), although doing that did crash the build while running under Wine.

As usual with (pre-)alpha releases, be aware of bugs and have backups handy.

Opera Unite out now

,

Opera 10.10 with Opera Unite is out now. Read more about it in the press release.

It has been a long wait since Opera Unite was announced in June. Unfortunately, Unite was not quite ready for release in the Opera 10.00 release a few months ago, but had to be delayed to 10.10 today.

The new version has some additional fixes and tweaks over 10.01, read more about it in the change logs (that was for Windows, they are also available for Mac and Unix/Linux).

If you have a good idea for a Unite application, have a look at the Opera Unite Challenge.

Enjoy!

Opera 10 beta 2 released

,

About one month after beta 1, Opera today released beta 2. It does not contain Opera Unite, but it does have several improvements over beta 1, as can be seen in the detailed change log.

I have been using Opera 10 as my primary browser for quite some time now, and I find it to be very stable and reliable, and can wholeheartedly recommend it.
