android, sony ericsson, smartphones
Svenska Dagbladet
reports that Sony Ericsson is looking at using Android (Swedish only,
try Google translate) for its upcoming high-end smartphones. This is an interesting development, after them
dropping UIQ and releasing the
Windows-based Xperia X1.
As I noted earlier, it really looks like they are trying to avoid putting all the eggs in one basket. They have their proprietary EMT platform and the Symbian-based platforms, they recently added Windows Mobile and are now looking at Android. Either it’s very smart thing, so that they do not end up at the losing end, or it is very dumb because they have to implement everything twice (or more). Time will tell.
Yes, I know there has been a lot of Sony Ericsson-related articles here lately. I
am looking to replace my old mobile phone soon. I just need to find a phone that I want to use. The
Nokia N97 (Swedish only,
try Google translate) looks like an interesting candidate, the only problem with it being a Nokia, which means getting a new set of chargers, speakers, and everything (but then again, apparently so would getting an Xperia).

sony ericsson, x1, smartphones
Swedish tabloid newspaper Expressen writes
that the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is a major flop (in Swedish;
bad automatic translation here). I haven’t tested one myself yet, so I can’t say if he’s right, but the article contains some wonderful quotes (my translation):
Since the phone is built upon the hopeless Windows Mobile operating system, there are certain advantages for companies running their mail and calendars via palmtops and smartphones. […] For everyone else Windows Mobile is a terrible operating system.
[…] if you want to write an SMS you need to open the keyboard. And that is completely worthless.
This panel is a small catastrophe in its own. To make a mark, Sony Ericsson ahs constructed a shell on top of Windows Mobile that allows multiple desktops […] to run in parallel. […] by pressing the right panel, you get to the selected desktop. But when you are there everything is as it used to be - the same Windows look and Microsoft logotypes.
Sounds like the author is not that happy with it. I tend to agree that the idea of having a device that cool to run on Windows Mobile doesn’t really help in making it very attractive. But I have to try one out before deciding on whether to get one…

browsers, sony ericsson, smartphones, x1
...
Sony Ericsson today unveiled the Xperia X1 smartphone in a press-show in Stockholm, Sweden. I have to say, it does look like an interesting phone, but I think they can learn a few things from the Apple crowd when it comes to how to make the audience interested…
The bad thing about the X1 is that it is using Windows Mobile instead of Symbian, but considering how Sony Ericsson butchered the wonderful UIQ interface from version 2 to version 3, perhaps it isn’t all that bad. One good thing that they at least had the decency to chose Opera Mobile as the default browser instead of Mobile IE.
