New phone for me

,

Actually, I’m buying myself a used phone this time. My P990i is feeling old and antiquated, and cannot even run the new Opera 9.5 beta. And I don’t feel like upgrading to the Xperia, at least not while most comments about it say that it is too slow (plus that it does run Windows). I might get one of those newfangled Android phones if they ever get released. But for the time being, I like to stick with Sony Ericsson and UIQ, so I am getting myself a used P1i instead. They can be found at reasonable prices now, and it ought to work as a “wait and see” phone until I can really decide…

Sony Ericsson going for Android

, ,

Svenska Dagbladet reports that Sony Ericsson is looking at using Android (Swedish only, try Google translate) for its upcoming high-end smartphones. This is an interesting development, after them dropping UIQ and releasing the Windows-based Xperia X1.

As I noted earlier, it really looks like they are trying to avoid putting all the eggs in one basket. They have their proprietary EMT platform and the Symbian-based platforms, they recently added Windows Mobile and are now looking at Android. Either it’s very smart thing, so that they do not end up at the losing end, or it is very dumb because they have to implement everything twice (or more). Time will tell.

Yes, I know there has been a lot of Sony Ericsson-related articles here lately. I am looking to replace my old mobile phone soon. I just need to find a phone that I want to use. The Nokia N97 (Swedish only, try Google translate) looks like an interesting candidate, the only problem with it being a Nokia, which means getting a new set of chargers, speakers, and everything (but then again, apparently so would getting an Xperia).

The Register on UIQ

, ,

The Register has a look back on UIQ, the graphical user interface that powered Sony Ericssons high-end smartphones for several years until being dropped earlier this year. The article has some interesting background information on how UIQ evolved from Psion’s “Quartz” UI, and the rise and fall of the Sony Ericsson “P” series smartphones.

No more UIQ phones from Sony Ericsson

,

Sony Ericsson has announced that they will not produce any more phones based on UIQ. That is a shame, since I believe UIQ to be the best GUI ever to be produced for a mobile phone so far, but was not that unexpected after they let 200 go from Uiq back in June.

At least it used to be, the version used in the P800/900/910 and early Motorolas was the easiest and most user-friendly GUI I have ever used, whereas the version used in the P990 and later is complete and utter crap.

I have been looking into the Xperia, but it has two major drawbacks for me: It doesn’t have the same ports as the P990, meaning that I need to get a new set of docking stations, chargers and external speakers, and it is running Windows Mobile.

Expressen disses the Xperia X1

, ,

Swedish tabloid newspaper Expressen writes that the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is a major flop (in Swedish; bad automatic translation here). I haven’t tested one myself yet, so I can’t say if he’s right, but the article contains some wonderful quotes (my translation):

Since the phone is built upon the hopeless Windows Mobile operating system, there are certain advantages for companies running their mail and calendars via palmtops and smartphones. […] For everyone else Windows Mobile is a terrible operating system.

[…] if you want to write an SMS you need to open the keyboard. And that is completely worthless.

This panel is a small catastrophe in its own. To make a mark, Sony Ericsson ahs constructed a shell on top of Windows Mobile that allows multiple desktops […] to run in parallel. […] by pressing the right panel, you get to the selected desktop. But when you are there everything is as it used to be - the same Windows look and Microsoft logotypes.

Sounds like the author is not that happy with it. I tend to agree that the idea of having a device that cool to run on Windows Mobile doesn’t really help in making it very attractive. But I have to try one out before deciding on whether to get one…
