Google suddenly gains Swedish translation

All of a sudden today all the English search results on Swedish Google have gained a “Translate this page” link. Apparently, this is something that English Google has had for quite some time, but since I always get a localised version due to my browser’s language settings, I have not seen them before. Until today, when the Swedish translation popped up.

I was expecting to see something like the bad TranExp word-for-word computer translations that some sites keep posting as “Swedish” versions of their home pages, hoping to attract visitors, but that rather scare them away, or something more Babelfish-like that can be understood. So I tried it with a page that I do translate myself, namely the Debian home page.

The Debian home page has an official Swedish translation, done by myself, so I compared it with Google’s translation and found that they must pick up, somehow, that the official translation corresponds to the original, because it has picked up most of my manual translation. There are some mismatched, for instance “Site map” has turned into “Sajtkarta” instead of “Sidöversikt” as I have translated it, and the security advisories look weird, but overall it looks quite good.

Trying the translation of a page that does not have an exact official translation, like Opera Software’s home page does give a slightly worse result, but still quite comprehensible. And its translation of the “fast facts” page is lightyears ahead of what TranExp produced.

It seems they also have support for translating from Swedish, which means that you can now “enjoy” Swedish tabloids, if you would want to…

Översättningsförvirring

Tidigare i år bestämde flera av oss översättare som översätter programvara till svenska oss för att översätta ”feed” till ”kanal” när det gäller möjligheten att prenumerera på nyheter eller andra uppdateringar på webben, till exempel i RSS- eller Atomformat. Det var deltagarna på sändlistan TP-SV och KDE-översättarna som bestämde sig för det, och samma översättning har jag konsekvent använt för funktionen i den svenska översättningen av Opera.

I dag hade Google Nyheter Sverige premiär, och både innehållet och gränssnittet är lokalanpassat och översatt till svenska. Tyvärr så har man valt att inte översätta ordet ”feed”, det står helt oöversatt, vilket är synd. Jag antar att vi inte har varit tillräckligt duktiga på att sprida vår översättning, det finns inte någon central där ”alla” som översätter till svenska kan diskutera översättningar, något som lätt leder till en begreppsförvirring.

Nåja, vi hade ju i alla fall tur, i den norska versionen har man översatt till ”innmatinger”, vilket verkar mycket underligt. Båda de norska översättningarna av Opera (både bokmål och nynorska) använder en variant av ”kanaler” i sin översättning.

En kollega postade en länk till Tranexp, som erbjuder automatisk översättning från engelska till svenska, inte helt olikt vad Babelfish har för andra språk.

Det som skiljer är dock att medan Babelfish brukar ge resultat som går att förstå, så blev det här mest en uppradning av ord:

International installation

As seen in the latest weekly builds of Opera 9.0, we are working on an international installer for Windows. Like Mac already had for Opera 8, we are creating a Windows installer that contains (almost) all the languages we have translations in. Doing this avoids having a specific installer for each language, which makes selecting the file to download difficult.

Several of the international versions have traditionally had some special settings shipped with their installer, for example the Japanese version would set Japanese fonts as default, and set the character encoding settings to Japanese, and all the translated versions would set the web page language setting appropriately. To avoid having to have several special cases in the installer, and having to duplicate this for all the platforms we release on, these default value for these settings are now set according to your settings.

This means that whatever language you have set in the Control Panel (Windows), System preferences (Mac) or through environment variables like LANG (Unix) will now be used to determine the web page language setting (Mac already did this in Opera 8). That setting will also decide whether to use any locale-specific character encoding setting, like enabling Asian auto-detection or setting the fallback encoding. On a Mac, changing the system language will even make Opera change its menu language (requires restart)!

Tweaking the language file format

Due to some unforeseen problems with the new language file numbering introduced in the previous weekly build, the build from 24th March changes it again somewhat. The good news is that language files created by using the remapping script I introduced last week still works. For the techies in the audience, the difference between the two numbering systems is that we changed the number from an unsigned 32-bit integer to a signed 32-bit integer. Thus any number over 2147483647 becomes a negative value.

However, to make it easier to keep track of the changes, I have created a new remapping script that uses the new numbering scheme. It works the same as the previous one, the only change is the remapping table.

If anyone has the resources to make an on-line remapper, where you can upload an old language file and have the numbers changed, please feel free to do so. If you send me the URL I will be happy to link to it.
