... how to soar with Opera...

On QuickTime plug-ins...

,

QuickTime offers an interesting way of generating plug-ins -- you only get plug-ins for those MIME types that you have set the player to handle.

To get QuickTime plug-ins, launch your player. Then go to Edit > Preferences > Quicktime preferences and select Browser Plug-in. Click on the MIME Settings... button.

QuickTime will create the plug-ins only for the types selected in these settings. Therefore, you should select everything to get all the possible plug-ins generated.

Opera 9 will automatically detect the QuickTime plug-ins from the QuickTime plug-ins folder after a restart.

For Opera 8.5x and earlier, copy all the plug-in files over to Opera (to Opera's install folder\Program\Plugins). Some versions of QuickTime (e.g. v7.0.2) will automatically place the plug-ins in Opera's install folder\Plugins, but this is not the correct plug-ins folder and therefore these files should be moved as described above. I now have npqtplugin[-8].dll happily residing in my Opera plug-ins folder. It is also good to copy over any other files (e.g. *.class) from the QuickTime plug-ins folder to Opera's plug-in folder.

Of course, you might still need to adjust the MIME types in Opera to use the appropriate plug-in...

Thanks, ND.  I didn't know all that.

It may be interesting to point out, though, that, every time you change things in the Browser MIME settings of Quicktime, you need to copy over ALL .dll and .class files that Quicktime makes as it recreates them each time.

I already had one .dll and .class in Opera's plugins folder when I wanted to add support for MPEG-4; I figured that copying over the new file, npqtplugin2.dll, would be enough but that wasn't the case and it took me some time to figure that out...

Also, if the number of .dll files drops, it's also better to remove those that are not overwritten from Opera's plugins folder.

The newer versions of QT will automatically copy the plug-ins generated into Opera's plug-ins folder. However, if you change the MIME-type selections in QT's plug-ins set-up to generate a reduced set of plug-ins, the others will also be automatically removed from Opera's plug-ins folder. QT is a bit too smart for comfort (for me, at least).

Ah I see. That's probably why the quicktime alternative includes all the different numbered quicktime dlls. I don't use the alternative anymore though.

Whenever I setup quicktime, I turn off as many associations as I can and therefore it only produces the npqtplugin.dll, the class file, and the xpt file(for gecko).

If I just have npqtplugin.dll and QuickTimePlugin.class, I'm still able to load whatever file type quicktime can handle just by using the video/quicktime mime type. So I haven't been able to confirm that the other files are actually needed for the different file support.

However, without the extra files you won't be able to associate all the other extensions they handle, with the quicktime plugin. But, I've had no reason (with Opera at least) to use all the extra dlls as everything seems to work with just npqtplugin.dll,QuickTimePlugin.class and the video/quicktime mime type.

Of course, not everyone will author a page and use the video/quicktime mime type for every file they want to embed with the quicktime plugin. That's where have the extra associations in Opera might be useful.

Good to know either way.
