The Falcon's Nest

... how to soar with Opera...

Changing your Opera installation from single-user to multi-user mode (and vice-versa)

The Opera installer provides the user with the option of installing in single-user mode or a multi-user mode. The key difference between the two is the location where user-specific data (e.g. profile, customizations, bookmarks, Mail etc) is stored on disk.

For single-user installs, this data is located under the Opera installation folder -- e.g. if you installed Opera in C:\Program Files\Opera, your user profile will also be saved under the same directory.

For multi-user installations, the user-specific data is stored under the user account folder. e.g. for Windows 2000 or XP, the user data will be placed in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Opera\Opera.

If you installed Opera in single-user mode, but would now like to change it to multi-user mode (or the other way around), here's what you need to do.

Close Opera. Then open the <Opera install folder>\OperaDef6.ini file in a text editor. Under the [System] section there is a line that looks like

Multi User=n

where n = 0 means it is single user mode, and n = 1 means multi-user mode. A comment next to it states something to the effect of "If enabled Opera will use Windows profiles to store individual user settings".

Change that line to say

Multi User=1

if you want a separate profile for each user; or

Multi User=0

if you want single profile for all users.

Save the file and close it. Then start Opera again.

If you had made any customizations in the old profile, you will also need to copy them over from the old profile location to the corresponding place in the new profile location, if you do not want to recreate them.

If you choose to copy or move the entire tree below C:Program FilesOpera7profile (single-user settings) to the corresponding user directory don't forget to change the paths in Opera6.ini (located in the profile folder) to the new location (C:Documents and Settings[...]).

My former comments got messed up (backslashes missing, substitution by smilies).

A preview or edit function should be added by my.opera.com! :irked:

IN THE MIDDLE IS ALREADY THIS:
[System]
Multi User=1 ; If enabled Opera will use Windows profiles to store individual user settings

SO IT SHOULD BE ALREADY BE MULTI-USER?

BUT OPERA IS NOT ACCESSIBLE IN NON-AMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT?

CAN ANYONE SHED ANYMORE LIGHT ON THIS?

THANKS

PETER

blogsmith 3. December 2006, 01:41

I just logged out of the admin account and log into the non-admin account and confirmed that Opera is not accessible from that account. I have installed FireFox, Irfanview, ColorPic, etc, and all of them are accessibel from both accounts without any hassle, without me having to do anything other than install. Why did Opera made this so difficult?

Sorry for ranting.

Peter

Thanks for the tip, but. IT-DOES-NOT-WORK !!!
So, you'd better remove this page or put an ad : "update : it does not work".
Another example of what used to work perfectly in Opera 8.XX and does not work in Opera 9. I thought it was the right moment to switch, I was wrong, back to 8.54.
If in a old Opera User like me start to get really angry with Opera for things like that, what a newbie gonna say ?

PS : I'm not angry about you, Neeraj Deshmukh, it's all about Opera staff, my (ex ?) favorite browser.

neeraj_deshmukh 18. December 2006, 20:51

[icare] What were you trying to achieve? Exactly what did you do? And what did not work?

icare 18. December 2006, 22:46

Well, it works, actually, lol. After I have done what Zoominee said :
"make sure that the shortcuts to Opera are on the "All users" part of the Programs menu, and then log out of administrator. I've done it like this on at least 4 different Windows XP installations and it just works."

I was a little afraid (or pissed off, as you like it, lol) when I saw there was no Opera folders in c:\documents and settings\user mode, but in fact, you need to start Opera once, and the folder is then created.

But that's very disturbing cos in Opera 8, the shortcuts and folders are automatically made during the installation; you don't have to create shortcuts for non-administrator account and start Opera.

Thanks anyway.

I kept getting the message from Opera that I could create individual user profiles for those who use this PC. It took a while but thanks your Blog has answered the question very well. I just wasn't going back far enough.

bourger 6. May 2007, 20:53

Thank you Neeraj Deshmukh for this tip - it works.
But why did this issue emerge in 9.20? In previous versions, there were no problems in working with Opera from any accounts. In 9.20, despite the installator's asking of "one or different profiles for users", I had to search the web for this page, and then to edit manually that file...
Without this actions, it was impossible to launch Opera in any two Windows accounts simultaneously ("this copy of program is already used...")
Is something wrong with 9.20 installator?

neeraj_deshmukh 7. May 2007, 19:51

[bourger] It depends on what OS you are using. With Windows Vista, the multi-profile requirement is quite serious. With Windows XP, it depends on several factors, including the load on your CPU. The installer is fine (I recommend using the standard MSI installer, not the old-style classic installer).
