... how to soar with Opera...

Opera email client and user authentication

Many times one sees that when checking for new mail messages / sending emails, an error message pops up asking you to enter your password. It usually complains about 'authentication failed'. What it means is that your email account is misconfigured, and you need to set the correct user authentication.

  • Click on Mail > Manage accounts
  • Select the account giving you trouble, and click the Edit button
  • In the resulting dialog, click on the Servers tab
  • For both incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) servers, set the appropriate value for user authentication -- start with 'Auto'
  • Save your changes by pressing OK
  • Try to check for new email again
  • If that does not work, try another authentication setting such as 'Plain text' -- try them all out till one works

Note that your password will be displayed as ****** (6 asterisks) regardless of its actual length. Don't panic -- Opera does this as a security measure to prevent anyone guessing it based on length. Internally, it stores the full password.
