Traditional Catholicism and Contemporary Evangelicalism

A commenter at internet monk wrote this profound comment on the state of contemporary evangelicalism/pentecostalism:

The wedge contemporary evangelicals are driving between young and old is incredibly short sighted and deadly. Doesn’t the Bible itself say that the older should teach the younger? We’ve turned things around so that anything new (even if unproven) and appealing to the not yet mature, still developing young is trotted out as appropriate worship. More experienced, mature Christians who should be teaching the young about and sharing with them their great Christian heritage are instead asked to “get with it” or “get out.” The evangelical church will die if all it can do is try to keep up with secular culture and make its focus offering whatever the latest fads or glitz it can to “attract” the young as if the church were somehow dependent on a Christian advertising machine rather than God to draw people to Him.

I took Denise to morning mass at Stella Maris (”Star of the Sea”) Roman Catholic Church in Moultrieville, SC. Almost 50 in attendance, of every age. Two priests. Two acolytes and two altar boys. Traditionalist. Ad orientem. Eucharist offered in one kind and most didn’t receive it in the hand. Lots of other traditionalist stuff happening. Several Latin masses during the month. All the little things.

I’m watching a father bring his 5 year old (?) to mass, take his hand and dip it in the water, make the cross for him, then take him to his seat and show him how to genuflect. Teenagers around me- apparently on retreat- are immersed in the various actions of Catholic worship, as are all the worshipers of every age this morning. Of course, adults of every age. Plenty of men. At least half or more of the congregation was male.

The traditionalist flavor of mass is more interesting to me, even in this low mass on a weekday, and I’ve read Ratzinger’s Spirit of the Liturgy and know where these priests are coming from. There’s a sign at the entrance to the church saying the parish can’t register any more members from outside their boundaries. Translation: traditionalism is popular down here in Charleston.

The whole idea of the daily mass, and the level of devotion one sees among so many Catholics such as those surrounding me, has to be of real interest to any post-evangelical. Evangelicalism is diverse, but as a movement it is simply engaging less and less with worship, spiritual formation, spiritual disciplines and any form of tradition. The multi-site, internet driven model combined with evangelicalism’s inherent pragmatism and entrepreneurialism makes one wonder if clicking at the computer terminal or taking in the 20 minute drive up/drop in service can be far away as significant models of evangelical Christianity’s virtues.

I am especially impressed with how a small child and an 80 year old man are functioning within the same world of thought, ritual and understanding. Within evangelicalism, we have communities with strong elements of tradition that bind generations together, but overall, we have compromised this to the core, allowing the quest to make the faith acceptable to teenagers to define the style and substance of everything. Where has evangelicalism gone in the last 60 years? Toward maturity and the core of the faith, or toward the latest efforts to be relevant to the young? The old among us are often those who manage to hang on amidst a hurricane of changes.

I see evangelicals doing less and less that will hold anyone in the faith into their 80s. If I were 80, I wouldn’t go near 99% of evangelical churches. The traditionalists somewhere would have me as a customer.

One oddity. No crucifix up front. One on the altar (well, slightly above it), but no large crucifix at the front anywhere. Central figures: Madonna and Child. Is this unusual? I thought the crucified Jesus visually up front was the usual.

In one publication, the priest said that young people are hyper-connected to one another via technology, but unconnected to God. The church must offer that connection in its mass. Quite a provocative take on the purpose of all of this. No surprise how I feel about it, but he is saying that the church’s great role is to be that which connects us to God. You have to deal with that, because he is right about young people, but can the Protestant Gospel offer the connection to God without the church in the role of mediator? If not, then Catholicism makes a lot of sense.

I could never be a Roman Catholic for theological reasons that won’t change, but if I were, this traditionalist-flavored variety would be quite appealing.

Reflection on Psalm 26

,

I am not ashamed
to worship you
my Lord and Redeemer

All week I walk and work
embraced by your love
You know that I love you
and try to do what is right.

Why would I walk away from you?
Your love is life
Why would I cause you grief?
I long to please you

Wicked people curse and lie
they kill and injure
they live only for self

Lord I love you
You are the solid ground
when all around is quicksand
I will stand on you
I will trust in you

I praise you
I thank you
I love you

Reflection on Job 2:1-10

,

Scripture
“Should we only accept good from the hands of God and never anything bad?”

Observation
Job is a blameless man. He doesn't sin. Yet he experiences tremendous suffering.

Job's suffering comes ironically from his righteousness and not from sin. God is boasting about Job's righteousness and satan the accuser uses this as an opportunity to impugn Job's character- let him suffer and he will surely sin.

It is out of a desire to prove the integrity of Job that God allows satan to strike him.

Application
Suffering, illness, loss- these are a fact of life. We try to pin them down into theological principles, but it's never that simple.

Some people like to make a connection between prosperity and righteousness, between suffering and sin. As Job shows us, it is possible to suffer as a direct result of being good.

We live in a broken world which is also the scene of a mighty tug of war between God and satan. In this scenario people experience tremendous suffering.

This is not to suggest that we are merely pawns on a chess board subject to the whims of powers much greater than us. Far from it! God has shown us how much He loves us by sending His Son into the world to pay the price for our sins.

The cause of human misery may not always be obvious. But we can affirm that God meets us and comforts us in our distress.

Prayer
Father I don't always understand your ways. Sometimes the pain in the world and in the lives of people around me just seems too great to understand. Than you for entering into our pain and meeting us at the place of our distress. Amen.

A Strange Allergy

, , , ...

I just noticed that there is a very strange reluctance at the ABC. It might have been just a one-off and I might be reading too much into things and leaping to conclusions but... On the AM programme this morning there was an item about the return of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party with an improved margin. The margin was so great that she was able to dump her main coalition partner, which was an unlikely and difficult allliance, and take on another conservative party in a new coalition.

The former coalition partner was named several times in the article- the Social Democratic Party- but Merkel's party remained nameless, except for a brief mention by the European correspondent. It was described as conservative, pro-business, liberal, right-of-centre, but the name was all but ignored. What is this word that dare not be spoken? Christian Democratic Party of course!

So maybe I'm just a bit too prone to conspiracy theories  I might keep an ear out for other reports of political incorrectness but I suspect that some people in the media might just be reluctant to mention the C word!

The other day Margaret noticed an item on a children's educational programme, Behind The News, also broadcast by the ABC. The item was about Islam which was described as one of Australia's biggest religions. She was a little surprised by this so paid some attention. Five minutes into the programme it mentioned the real facts. Islam is the third biggest religion behind Christianity 76% and Buddhism 2% and then Islam 1%. So Islam accounts for just 1% of the population but is described as "one of the biggest religions" in the country.

Just a little bit of ABC spin there.

Dust Storm- the view from space

NASA has published this satellite photo of yesterday's dust storm which was so thick that the ground and ocean could not be seen.

Reflection on Mark 9:38-50

,

Scripture
“If anyone is not against us he is for us.”

Observation
Jesus does not set up “in” and “out” groups. Everyone who is not against Him is for Him.

The key thing to worry about is making sure that I do not establish obstacles to salvation- for myself and for others. Anything that might lead me into sin must be sacrificed for the sake of a much higher value- eternal life.

Application
Christians, especially some pastors, spend so much time measuring up who is saved and who is not. We can be like the Pharisees insisting that people have to meet quite narrow criteria before they are classified as saved.

Jesus' approach seems to be that rather than focusing on whether others are saved, we need to make sure that we make it as easy as possible for others to get into the Kingdom.

Does my lifestyle draw people to Jesus or drive them away?

Does my attitude welcome people or turn them away?

Can people see the life of Jesus in my life?

Prayer
Father let me never become a stumbling block to people who are genuinely seeking your Kingdom. May I point those around me to your never-failing love in all I say and do today. Amen.

Reflection on James 5:13-20

,

Scripture
The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Observation
This section neatly summarises the characteristics of healthy christian community:

* prayer and praise
* healing prayer
* forgiveness of sin
* confession to one another
* rescue of wandering brothers and sisters

There needs to be transparency, openness, love and respect for one another and all of it covered and upheld by prayer.

Application
How do we rate our church on this scale? I would rate New life at about 70%- well ahead of many churches in ministering and loving one another but still with a long way to go.

Each person needs to evaluate how they help to establish community. Do I pray with the sick? Do I help people experience the power of forgiveness of sins? And so on.

Prayer
Father you have come into the world tp do more than simply save sinners. You want to establish a community of followers who show such love for you and for one another that the world is transformed. Help us to grow in this grace. Amen.

Reflection on Psalm 124

,

Scripture
Our help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth

Observation
This psalm reminds us that at both the individual and national levels we need to submit to God and recognise our dependence on Him.

“What if the Lord had not been on our side?”

For a nation like Israel- small and defenceless before the might of neighouring powers, this is a reality. The existence of Israel, its survival in a hostile world, depended on God's favour.

If the Lord had not been on their side, Israel would have long ago disappeared from the world,

Application
There are so many times in my life when God's protection was evident. What if the Lord had not been with me?

What about all those times when I have unwittingly stood on the edge of danger?

Our daily lives, our very survival, depend on God's favour.

Australia has been called “The Lucky Country” which is a secularised version of the same thought- we have an abundance of natural resources, we are protected by isolation, we have very stable governments and have rarely been under attack from within or outside.

Prayer
Thank you Lord for your favour and your protection. Glorious, gracious father, you care for us every day and at every level. May our nation learn to praise you for your favour. Amen.

Reflection on Esther 7:1-10, 9:20-22

,

Scripture
he told them to celebrate these days with feasting and gladness and by giving gifts of food to each other and presents to the poor.

Observation
The Book of Esther does not mention God, but it is a testament to God's deliverance of a nation from treachery and imminent destruction.

Esther, who has risen to be the Queen of Persia, arranges a banquet for the King and his top advisers.

At this banquet she exposes the perfidy of Haman and he is executed.

Mordecai, a leader of the Jewish exile community, orders a feast to be established which is now called Purim.

Application
In a world where we daily see politicians and leaders strut the stage, it is hard to see past the manoeuvrings and machinations of human beings.

The Bible asserts that it is God who raises nations and it is God who pulls them down.

Men and women might think that they are powerful or influential, but the fate of nations, indeed the whole world, is in God's hands.

Prayer
Father help me to see the nightly news through your eyes. Help our national leaders submit themselves to your purposes and formulate all their plans and policies in submission to your will. Amen.

Speaking in Tongues

Ben Hughes has just shared this on his facebook page and I thought I would pass it on- it's a brilliant story about the power of speaking in tongues.

So, this is a little crazy. A pastor from Bethel Church in Redding, CA took a team to Israel a couple weeks ago to minister the gospel in Jerusalem and around. One night while they were there, a teenage team member was praying in tongues, and the groups guide/interpreter came up to him. She asked, "Where did you learn to speak Hebrew?" He replied, "I don't know Hebrew!" Turns out, this young man was praying in perfect Hebrew by the power of the Holy Spirit. For the rest of the trip, there was this unique anointing for him to simply enter into Hebrew prayer at will, though he had not idea what he was saying!

Then one night, someone had the brilliant idea to have the interpreter try and write down what he was praying. Here are some pieces of what was said. Now, keep in mind: this is the Holy Spirit praying sovereignly through this guy by the gift of tongues, in the language of Hebrew.

God, I long for You. You abide.
He will judge, and give us prophecies.
You will judge and sit here in the sky with Your angels of fire.

You are our God for the weak. Hear me, God.
I am in peace.
God, King, You are in my tongue!

You wrote everything.
You are life.
The King will rise up, the fire will rise up, the fire will come.
We hope You will sit with us.
You will judge.
You will show us the hidden things.

We will be together in life.
Lots, and lots and lots of glory!
You are life!
God will give!
You are with Your angels!
Give us fire on the poor!
God, Your angels will hear.
Your angels will sit with You, and You will listen to them.

Come for the people.
Blow on us.
You will come for the Rabbis! Give them wisdom.

You will return. Judge all life. Bring fire.
You will bring rest and destroy all sicknesses.
You are One. There will be no sicknesses.
Bring them life! Yeshua will come!
He is the God of the living. For the living, there will be no sicknesses!
Captives God will advise.

Kiss us!
King of the living, You are above all sicknesses! And for animals too.
Father, You are alive in the name of the living. Be with me!
Not above God, but on the people.
King of the living, You are alive! No sicknesses!
Give us more fruitfulness, understanding, and wisdom.
King of the living: no sicknesses!
He will bring us the true nature.

Snake Born With Hand

Just assuming for a minute that this is not a hoax, this raises a big issue for scientists.

For evolutionists, it's a plus because it shows that macro features can be quickly developed and passed on (assuming of course that there is no old lady handy to hit you over the head before oyu can pass the change on).

But for evolutionists, it's also a minus in the sense that they have always assumed millions of years were necessary for the big range of species on earth to develop.

Creationists have to explain why the genetic information for a hand would be encoded into a snake in China. A throwback to Genesis 3?

Here's the article from ninemsn.com

Snake born with hand shocks scientists
10:30 AEST Wed Sep 16 2009
By ninemsn staff

An elderly Chinese woman who discovered a snake with a clawed hand protruding from its body was so scared she beat it to death, according to reports.

Xiu Qiong Duan, 68, told the SINA Beijing news agency she woke up in the middle of the night to find the snake clinging to the wall of her bedroom.

"I woke up and heard a strange scratching sound ... at first I thought it was thieves" she said.

"I turned on the light and saw this monster working its way along the wall using his claw."

Ms Duan, from Suining in southwest China, said she then grabbed a shoe and beat the snake to death.

She reportedly preserved its body in a bottle of alcohol which she gave to the Life Sciences Department at China's West Normal University in Nanchang.

Snake expert Long Shuai said the discovery of the creature, which is 40cm long and the thickness of a little finger, was "truly shocking".

"We won't know the cause until we've conducted an autopsy," she said.

Reflection on Mark 8:27-38

,

Scripture
“If you try to hang onto your life you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News you will save it.”

Observation
Jesus now comes to the heart of His message.

1. Who do you say I am? Every person must make up his/her mind about who Jesus is.

2. The necessity of the cross. There is no other way to be saved than through receiving the death of Jesus on the cross.

3. Discipleship- followers of Jesus must identify with His death on the cross. This means surrendering all of our rights, ambitions and dreams. “Not my will but yours be done.”

Application
It is in dying that we are raised to eternal life. As we walk along the Way of Jesus, and seek to draw ever closer to Him, He will identify aspects of our old nature that need to be put to death.

He will deal with all of our addictions and sinful habits- if we let Him.

This is the power of dying to ourselves- it unleashes the power of God to raise us to new life- abundant, eternal life.

Of course the process of dying to ourselves is painful. We must not shy away from the pain, but rather embrace it as the path to new life.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, today I take up my cross to follow you. I recognise that in dying to myself I will be raised to a new life. Help me to stay the course and pursue you too the end regardless of the cost. Amen.

Reflection on James 3:1-12

,

Scripture
People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and fish, but no one can tame the tongue.

Observation
the tongue is a very small part of our body yet it has great power.

Just as a tiny rudder directs a huge ship, so the tongue can set the course of our life and the lives of others.

No one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil. It is like a spring that produces both good water and bitter water.

Application
Reputations have been destroyed by a bad word. Lives have been taken because of false accusations and words of betrayal.

A wise person, especially christians, will bridle their tongue.

We need to ensure that our tongues are only used for edifying others and praising God.

All gossip, slander, foul language, curses and name calling must go. We can't tame our tongue, but God can. As He cleanses our heart and mind we will find our speech lifted up.

Prayer
The tongue is restless and evil. Father help me to surrender all of my words to you. Amen.

Opera 10 Hits 10 Million Downloads

Opera, the fastest and most secure web browser

In just one week, Opera 10 has had 10 million downloads. I know all the Firefox fanboys will say, "So what?", but it's a good result!

Opera is a brilliant web browser. It doesn't quite do all I would hope for, but for speed and built-in features, it's the best browser.

A sudden and unexpected downpour late this afternoon resulted in a magnificent double rainbow.

Rainbows always speak to me of hope- God is in control and he will bring something wonderrful out of the darkest, most painful times. We have seen rainbows in the past at times when we've needed special encouragement. Although that's not the case today, it's still a nice reminder- God is in control.

New Living Translation

The last week or so I've been taking a look at the New Living Translation of the Bible

I know that this translation has been out since 1996, but you don't want to rush into these new-fangled things! :D

The reason why I've not really looked at it until now is that it came out around the same time as the Contemporary English Version (CEV), and the CEV came to my attention first. Also I put the NLT aside as I wrongly thought it was just an update on the Living Bible which I had actually first started reading when I was a new Christian in the 1970's.

Like all translations the NLT has strengths and weaknesses. What I've read so far, I like. It is easy to read and has been written to flow well when read aloud. The language is simple yet evocative.

The real weakness of the CEV is that the translators never really understood the nature of the Holy Spirit. They speak of the Spirit "taking control" of a peson. This is wrong. I'm glad to see the NLT retains language which speaks of filling of the Holy Spirit.

So far the NLT appears very good.

I've heard of some evangelicals who were initially excited about the ESV (English Standard Version) going to (or back to) the NLT because the ESV is so hard to read. That's interesting because the ESV was supposed to be the next NIV.

Speaking of the NIV there are plans to issues a revised NIV in 2011. Apparently the TNIV which was the last attempt to tweak the NIV got panned for being too affected by gender issues. It will be interesting to see what the next version turns out like.

Meanwhile the NLT is my current Bible of choice. If I still like it at the end of the year I will treat myself to a Christmas present.
