The personal restraints that God places
By G D Watson
If God has called you to be really like Jesus He will draw you into a life of crucifixion and humility, and put upon you such demands of obedience, that you will not be able to follow other people, or measure yourself by other Christians, and in many ways He will seem to let other people do things which He will not let you do.
Other Christians and ministers who seem very religious and useful, may push themselves, pull wires, and work schemes to carry out their plans, but you cannot do it, and if you attempt it, you will meet with such failure and rebuke from the Lord as to make you sorely penitent.
Others may boast of themselves, of their work, of their successes, of their writings, but the Holy Spirit will not allow you to do any such thing, and if you begin it, He will lead you into some deep mortification that will make you despise yourself and all your good works.
Others may be allowed to succeed in making money, or may have a legacy left to them, but it is likely God will keep you poor, because He wants you to have something far better than gold, namely, a helpless dependence upon Him, that He may have the privilege of supplying your needs day by day out of an unseen treasury.
The Lord may let others be honored and put forward, and keep you hidden in obscurity, because He wants to produce some choice fragrant fruit for His coming glory, which can only be produced in the shade. He may let others be great, but keep you small. He may let others do a work for Him and get the credit for it, but He will make you work and toil on without knowing how much you are doing; and then to make your work still more precious He may let others get credit for the work which you have done, and thus make your reward ten times greater when Jesus comes.
The Holy Spirit will put a strict watch over you, with a jealous love, and will rebuke you for little words and feelings or for wasting your time, which other Christians never feel distressed over. So make up your mind that God is an Infinitely Sovereign Being, and has a right to do as He pleases with His own. He may not explain to you a thousand things which puzzle your reason in His dealings with you, but if you absolutely sell yourself to be His love slave, He will wrap you up in Jealous Love, and bestow upon you many blessings which come only to those who are in the inner circle.
Settle it forever, then that you are to deal directly with the Holy Spirit, and that He is to have the privilege of tying your tongue, or chaining your hand, or closing your eyes, in ways that He does not seem to use with others. Now, when you are so possessed with the living God that you are, in your secret heart, pleased and delighted over this peculiar, personal, private, jealous guardianship and management of the Holy Spirit over your life., then you will have found the vestibule of Heaven.

church, Holy Spirit
We had a great day in church today! I'm blown away. Nothing manufactured or hyped, just good Holy Spirit ministry.
Like most churches around the world we celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost today. I think what hit me the most was a couple of unscripted incidents.
For some weeks we have been collecting coins for the "Turn On the Tap" appeal being run by Samaritan's Purse. The idea is that you fill an ordinary drinking bottle with coins and then send them the proceeds. Last Sunday we closed it off and this morning I announced that we had collected $181, which I thought was a good effort. But someone said "Why don't we have another go around and finish off the $250 which would supply a village with a bore and hand-pump?" So we sent the bottle around and, when it was counted later, we had surpassed the total and were on the way to the second pump. So Tim said "We might as well get the second one as well", so he went and got his wallet and started putting in serious notes and then David joined him as well and by the time they had finished we had enough for the second pump!
Then people hung around through morning tea and well into the afternoon, which was really good. Community is really growing in our church.
This evening we had what amounted to a soaking service, with an extended worship time and a short message. We just put on the CD and let it run without words on the screen, and let God minister whatever He wanted to do in us. Powerful stuff.
Again we had people stay for ages afterwards, just sharing together about what God is doing.
Awesome Pentecost Sunday!

Scripture
When the last days come, I will give my Spirit to everyone. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will have visions and your old men will have dreams.
Observation
The Day of Pentecost is a powerful day- it is the day when the Holy Spirit transforms a bunch of uncertain followers into bold ministers of the gospel. He is still doing that work today.
There are three signs of the presence of the Spirit on Pentecost:
1. Wind- the power (dunamis) of God. The power to heal, to raise people from the dead, preach and in all ways to act as Jesus did. Wind represents the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8-11).
2. Fire- cleansing, purifying, burning up of the stuff in our life that has little value. This allows us to take on the character of Jesus, represented by the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
3. Tongues- the beautiful personal prayer language which speaks of intimacy with God. The Spirit is not an external force or power but the presence of God in our spirits,
Application
Many people try to live without the Holy Spirit active in their lives.
Maybe that sort of “power encounter” with God is too scary. Perhaps three is a need to be in control- but our lives work better when God is in control. Maybe it's a fear of being seen as “weird”- but to the world christians are weird anyway.
We need to surrender daily to the fiery, windy, “tonguesy” Holy Spirit. Let God take control of our lives and let Him direct the way we live, speak and act.
Prayer
Come Holy Spirit! Pour the full power of Pentecost into my spirit mow. Let me live every day in the transforming, empowering baptism of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Following the announcement this week that Todd Bentley has separated from his wife Shonna, "Charisma" editor J. Lee Grady raises some disturbing questions for the christian community.
Life After Lakeland: Sorting Out the Confusion
Todd Bentley's announcement that his marriage is ending has thrown our movement into a tailspin and questions need to be answered.
It was not supposed to end like this.
Evangelist Todd Bentley had heralded the Lakeland revival as the greatest Pentecostal outpouring since Azusa Street. From his stage in a gigantic tent in Florida, Bentley preached to thousands, bringing many of them to the stage for prayer. Many claimed to be healed of deafness, blindness, heart problems, depression and dozens of other conditions in the Lakeland services, which ran for more than 100 consecutive nights. Bentley announced confidently that dozens of people had been raised from the dead during the revival.
But this week, a few days after the Canadian preacher announced the end of his visits to Lakeland, he told his staff that his marriage is ending. Without blaming the pace of the revival for Bentley's personal problems, his board released a public statement saying that he and his wife, Shonnah, are separating. The news shocked Bentley's adoring fans and saddened those who have questioned his credibility since the Lakeland movement erupted in early April.
"Among those who jumped on the Lakeland bandwagon, discernment was discouraged. They were expected to swallow and follow. The message was clear: 'This is God. Don't question.'
I'm sad. I'm disappointed. And I'm angry. Here are few of my many, many questions about this fiasco:
Why did so many people flock to Lakeland from around the world to rally behind an evangelist who had serious credibility issues from the beginning?
To put it bluntly, we're just plain gullible.
From the first week of the Lakeland revival, many discerning Christians raised questions about Bentley's beliefs and practices. They felt uneasy when he said he talked to an angel in his hotel room. They sensed something amiss when he wore a T-shirt with a skeleton on it. They wondered why a man of God would cover himself with tattoos. They were horrified when they heard him describe how he tackled a man and knocked his tooth out during prayer.
But among those who jumped on the Lakeland bandwagon, discernment was discouraged. They were expected to swallow and follow. The message was clear: "This is God. Don't question. So before we could all say, "Sheeka Boomba" (as Bentley often prayed from his pulpit), many people went home, prayed for people and shoved them to the floor with reckless abandon, Bentley-style.
I blame this lack of discernment, partly, on raw zeal for God. We're spiritual hungry which can be a good thing. But sometimes, hungry people will eat anything.
Many of us would rather watch a noisy demonstration of miracles, signs and wonders than have a quiet Bible study. Yet we are faced today with the sad reality that our untempered zeal is a sign of immaturity. Our adolescent craving for the wild and crazy makes us do stupid things. It's way past time for us to grow up.
Why didn't anyone in Lakeland denounce the favourable comments Bentley made about William Branham?
This one baffles me. Branham embraced horrible deception near the end of his ministry, before he died in 1965. He claimed that he was the reincarnation of Elijah and his strange doctrines are still embraced by a cult-like following today. When Bentley announced to the world that the same angel that ushered in the 1950s healing revival had come to Lakeland, the entire audience should have run for the exits.
Why didn't anyone correct this error from the pulpit? Godly leaders are supposed to protect the sheep from heresy, not spoon feed deception to them. Only God knows how far this poison travelled from Lakeland to take root elsewhere. May God forgive us for allowing His Word to be so flippantly contaminated.
A prominent Pentecostal evangelist called me this week after Bentley's news hit the fan. He said to me: "I'm now convinced that a large segment of the charismatic church will follow the anti-Christ when he shows up because they have no discernment.” Ouch. Hopefully we'll learn our lesson this time and apply the necessary caution when an impostor shows up.
Why did God TV tell people that "any criticism of Todd Bentley is demonic?
This ridiculous statement was actually made on one of God TV's pre-shows. In fact, the network's hosts also warned listeners that if they listened to criticism of Bentley, they could lose their healings.
This is cultic manipulation at its worst. The Bible tells us that the Bereans were noble believers because they studied the Scriptures daily "to see whether these things were so”(Acts 17:11, NASB). Yet in the case of Lakeland, honest intellectual inquiry was viewed as a sign of weakness. People were expected to jump first and then open their eyes.
Just because we believe in the power of the Holy Spirit does not mean we check our brains at the church door. We are commanded to test the spirits. Jesus wants us to love Him with our hearts and our minds.
Because of the Lakeland scandal, there may be large numbers of people who feel they've been burned by Bentley. Some may give up on church and join the growing ranks of bitter, disenfranchised Christians. Others may suffer total spiritual shipwreck. This could have been avoided if leaders had been more vocal about their objections and urged people to evaluate spiritual experiences through the filter of God's Word.
Why did a group of respected ministers lay hands on Bentley on June 23 and publicly ordain him? Did they know of his personal problems?
This controversial ceremony was organized by Peter Wagner, who felt that one of Bentley's greatest needs was proper spiritual covering. He asked California pastors Che Ahn and Bill Johnson, along with Canadian pastor John Arnott, to lay hands on Bentley and bring him under their care.
Bentley certainly needs such covering. No one in ministry today should be out on their own, living in isolation without checks, balances and wise counsel. It was commendable that Wagner reached out to Bentley and that Bentley acknowledged his need for spiritual fathers by agreeing to submit to the process. The question remains, however, whether it was wise to commend Bentley during a televised commissioning service that at times seemed more like a king's coronation.
In hindsight, we can all see that it would have been better to take Bentley into a back room and talk about his personal issues.
The Bible tells us that ordination of a minister is a sober responsibility. Paul wrote: "Do not lay hands upon anyone too hastily and thereby share responsibility for the sins of others”(1 Tim. 5:22). We might be tempted to rush the process, but the apostle warned against fast-tracking ordination and he said that those who commission a minister who is not ready for the job will bear some of the blame for his failures.
I trust that Wagner, Ahn, Johnson and Arnott didn't know of Bentley's problems before they ordained him. I am sure they are saddened by the events of this week and are reaching out to Bentley and his wife to promote healing and restoration. But I believe that they, along with Bentley and the owners of God TV, owe the body of Christ a forthright, public apology for thrusting Bentley's ministry into the spotlight prematurely. (Perhaps such an apology should be aired on God TV.)
Can anything good come out of this?
That depends on how people respond. If the men assigned to oversee Bentley offer loving but firm correction, and if Bentley responds humbly to the process by stepping out of ministry for a season of rehabilitation, we could witness a healthy case of church discipline play out the way it is supposed to. If all those who were so eager to promote Bentley now rush just as fast to repent for their errors in judgment, then the rest of us could breathe a huge sigh of relief and the credibility of our movement could be restored.
I still believe that God desires to visit our nation in supernatural power. I know He wants to heal multitudes, and I will continue praying for a healing revival to sweep across the United States. But we must contend for the genuine, not an imitation. True revival will be accompanied by brokenness, humility, reverence and repentance not the arrogance, showmanship and empty hype that often was on display in Lakeland.
We are weathering an unprecedented season of moral failure and spiritual compromise in our nation today. I urge everyone in the charismatic world to pray for Bentley; his wife, Shonnah; his three young children; Bentley's ministry staff; and the men and women who serve as his counsellors and advisers. Let's pray that God will turn this embarrassing debacle into an opportunity for miraculous restoration.

faith, Holy Spirit
“Perhaps much of our slow progress in the walk of faith is to be traced to our overlooking the love of the Spirit.
We do not deal with Him, for strength and advancement, as one who really loves us, and longs to bless us, and delights to help our infirmities (Rom 8:26). We regard Him as cold, or distant, or austere; we do not trust Him for His grace, nor realize how much He is in earnest in His dealings with us.
More childlike confidence in Him and in His love would help us on mightily. Let us not grieve Him, nor vex Him, nor quench Him by our untrustfulness, by disbelieving or doubting the riches of His grace, the abundance of His loving-kindness.”

church, Holy Spirit
J. Lee Grady, the editor of "Charisma" Magazine has written this balanced and cautious opinion piece about the Lakeland Florida meetings.
God is stirring deep spiritual passion in the hearts of the thousands of people who have traveled to Florida during the last month to experience the Lakeland Healing Revival. Since these meetings began in a 700-seat church on April 2, the crowd has moved four times to bigger venues, the fervor has intensified and the news has spread worldwide—thanks to God TV and online broadcasting.
Within a few weeks, the bandwagon effect was in full swing. It’s safe to say that no outbreak of Pentecostalism in history has gained so much international exposure so quickly as these meetings have.
I’m a cheerleader for the charismatic movement, so I rejoiced when I heard the news about revivalist Todd Bentley’s extended visit to Ignited Church. It was thrilling to hear the reports of miracles and to watch the crowd grow until a stadium was required to hold everyone.
“When we put bizarre behavior on the platform we imply that it is normative. Thus more strange fire is allowed to spread.”
When I visited a service on April 15, I was blessed by Heather Clark’s music and the audience’s exuberant worship. And I laughed with everyone else as I watched Bentley shout his trademarked “Bam! Bam! Bam!” as he prayed for the sick and flailed his tattooed arms over the crowd. Hey, Jesus didn’t pray for people according tothe Pharisees’ rulebook, so I’m open to unconventional methods.
But I would be dishonest if I told you that I wholeheartedly embraced what I saw in Lakeland. Something disturbed me, but I kept my mouth shut for three weeks while I prayed, got counsel from respected ministry leaders and searched my heart to make sure I was not harboring a religious spirit. The last thing we need today is more mean-spirited heresy hunters blasting other Christians.
I am not a heresy hunter, and I support what is happening in Lakeland because I know God uses imperfect people (like me and you) to reach others for Jesus. At the same time, I believe my questions are honest and my concerns are real.
My motive is not to criticize Bentley or the pastor who is sponsoring these meetings, Stephen Strader. In September 2002 Charisma featured a seven-page article about Bentley’s amazing conversion from drug addiction. I believe Bentley is a sincere brother who wants people to encounter God’s presence and power. No doubt this 32-year-old evangelist needs our prayers now more than ever, especially since he has become the focus of international media attention.
But as the noise from Lakeland grows louder and its influence spreads, I’m issuing some words of warning that apply to all of us, not just the folks in Lakeland. I hope everyone understands that these cautions are offered in love:
1. Beware of strange fire. The name of Jesus is being lifted up in the Lakeland revival, and three people came to the altar for salvation the night I attended. Larger numbers have come to the front of the auditorium to find Christ every night since then.
Yet I fear another message is also being preached subtly in Lakeland—a message that cult-watchers would describe as a spiritual counterfeit. Bentley is one of several charismatic ministers who have emphasized angels in the last several years. He has taught about angels who bring financial breakthroughs or revelations, and he sometimes refers to an angel named Emma who supposedly played a role in initiating a prophetic movement in Kansas City in the 1980s. Bentley describes Emma as a woman in a flowing white dress who floats a few feet off the floor.
All of us who believe the Bible know that angels are real, and that they work on our behalf to protect us and minister to us. But the apostle Paul, who had encounters with angels himself, issued stern warnings to the Corinthians, the Galatians and the Colossians about angels who preach another gospel or that demand attention. In Colossae, believers were so enamored with angels they had seen in visions that they became “inflated without cause” by spiritual pride (Col. 2:18, NASB). Paul was adamant that preoccupation with angels can lead to serious deception.
We need to tread carefully here! We have no business teaching God’s people to commune with angels or to seek revelations from them. And if any revival movement—no matter how exciting or passionate—mixes the gospel of Jesus with this strange fire, the results could be devastating. We need to remember that Mormonism was born out of one man’s encounter with a dark angel who claimed to speak for God.
2. Beware of bizarre manifestations. When the Holy Spirit’s power comes on people they may feel weak or even fall. The Spirit’s power can also cause people to tremble, shake, laugh or cry. Such manifestations are biblical and we should leave room for them. But where do we draw the line between legitimate experience and fanatical excess?
The apostle Paul had to deal with outrageous charismatic manifestations in the Corinthian church. People were acting like raving lunatics—and turning the church in to a free-for-all of unbridled ecstatic behavior. Paul called for discipline and order, and he reminded early Christians that “the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets” (1 Cor. 14:32). In other words, Paul was saying that no one under the influence of the Holy Spirit should act out of control.
In many recent charismatic revivals, ministers have allowed people to behave like epileptics on stage—and they have attributed their attention-getting antics to the Holy Spirit. We may think it’s all in fun (you know, we’re just “acting crazy” for God) but we should be more concerned that such behavior feeds carnality and grieves the Spirit.
When exotic manifestations are encouraged, people can actually get a religious high from jerking, vibrating, screaming or acting intoxicated. (I have even been around people who writhed as if in pain, or made sexual noises—thinking this was a legitimate spiritual experience.) But emotional euphoria doesn’t guarantee a heart change. The person who is bucking like an untamed bronco in a church service would benefit more from sitting still and reading the Bible for an hour. When we put bizarre behavior on the platform we imply that it is normative. Thus more strange fire is allowed to spread.
3. Beware of hype and exaggeration. Our hearts are crying out today for a genuine move of God. We want the real deal. We’ve read about the Great Awakenings of the past and we long to see our nation overcome by a wave of repentance. The church is in a backslidden state, and our nation has rebelled against God. We are desperate!
In our longing for a holy visitation, however, we must be careful not to call the first faint breeze of the Spirit a full-fledged revival. If we do that, we are setting people up for disappointment when they realize it may not be what we blew it up to be.
Some of the language used during the Lakeland Revival has created an almost sideshow atmosphere. People are invited to “Come and get some.” Miracles are supposedly “popping like popcorn.” Organizers tout it as the greatest revival in history.
Such brash statements cheapen what the Holy Spirit is doing—and they do a disservice to our brothers and sisters who are experiencing New Testament-style revival in countries such as Iran, China and India. We have a long way to go before we experience their level of revival. Let’s stay humble and broken before the Lord.
I am rejoicing over all the reported healings at the Lakeland meetings. Miracles are awesome. Crowds are great. But miracles and crowds alone don’t guarantee a revival. Multitudes followed Jesus during His ministry on earth, but many of the people who saw the dead raised or ate food that was supernaturally multiplied later crucified the Son of God.
It was the few disciples who followed Jesus after Calvary who ushered in a true revival—one that was bathed in the fear of God, confirmed by signs and wonders, tempered by persecution and evidenced by thousands of conversions, new churches and the transformation of society. We should expect nothing less.

Balaam And The Prophetic Movement
..stopbelieving every spirit. Instead, test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (I John 4:1)
I stopped reading the prophetic bulletins and websites several years ago. I found many of them did not "taste right", and I didn't know why. But, I still have one or two in the in box every week and I've watched the trends, and there are two trends that should concern all of us. We may not have noticed them because, like the "frog in the kettle" we adjust to the rising heat and don't realize we are slowly cooking to death. The scripture warns us about two dangers for prophets. One warning is about the "spirit of Antichrist" and the other is what I could call "the spirit of Balaam".
Now, I'm not saying God is not powerfully working in the prophetic movement. We are seeing a great transition from a church focus to a Kingdom focus, and the Lord is using many prophets to help usher this in. I've been a part of it myself. But this also means we are more vulnerable as we press into new times and seasons.
The Spirit of Antichrist Slips In
But every spirit who does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the Antichrist. You have heard that he is coming, and now he is already in the world.
I John 4:3
The word "Anti-Christ" does not mean "against" Christ, as it would in English. The Greek word actually means a replacement, or "instead of" Christ. Christ means "the anointed one". The reason John warns the church about the spirit of Antichrist is NOT that a prophet comes speaking against Jesus, but that their attention is taken away from Him. Instead, it is given to a man, a doctrine or to something else that is anointed.
When something subtly replaces Jesus Christ as the focus, it is the spirit of Antichrist at work. In todays prophetic movement, it seems the attention has moved away from Jesus. The focus on signs and manifestations is increasing, and the signs are getting stranger. The appearances of angels, (which is biblical), has given way to gold dust, falling feathers and gemstones, glowing orbs and... whatever. A large proportion of the prophetic words now focus on the signs and the glory that's coming. Does it sound like it's all going in one direction?
I'm not saying there are not signs from God in the prophetic movement, but you can read hundreds of these prophecies and theres hardly a reference to Jesus. Also, the fruit of these signs and wonders seem to point only to themselves, personalities and meetings. We aught to be concerned that the spirit of antichrist is subtly at work, changing the temperature, and "replacing Christ."
Remember, John didn't say a spirit or prophecy would speak against Jesus. Jesus is simply being replaced by a different focus. A new love develops in the heart. We are in danger of the spirit of Antichrist becoming well mixed into the prophetic movement. It's time for Jesus to once again be the main focus.
The Spirit Of Balaam Takes Over
How terrible it will be for them! For they .... rushed headlong into Balaam's error to make a profit, and destroyed themselves .....
(Jude 1:11)
In Numbers 22, Balaam appears to be a genuine prophet who gives the word of the Lord concerning Israel. But, he was greedy for King Balaak's reward and so he caused Israel to sin and be defeated. (See Numbers 31:16)
The "spirit of Balaam" as I have called it, is at work when the love of money overtakes a prophet. As with "the spirit of Antichrist, this Balaam spirit is subtle. A prophet could easily resist outright greed, but when expenses or financial gain is a possibility, the Balaam spirit moves in. If success and recognition comes, the desire for riches can become a very real problem. Today, there are serious indications that the "spirit of Balaam" has entered the house of the prophets.
Psychic Chat Lines Move Over
I just visited one of the most popular prophetic websites and I was astonished. The sale of "prophetic product" has truly reached an all time high. In fact it's taken over and the pages are jammed. Most of the links are about books, and quotes of prophets recommending them. I had trouble finding any ministry. When I finally clicked on some teaching and prophetic words. I got a few sentences then a "click here to buy" link! I needed to pay $3.00 to download the prophetic word. God help us! Are the prophets selling out to greed? Whatever happened to Jesus command "freely you have received, freely give." It's merchandise in the temple.
Be clear-minded and alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
I Peter 5:8
Conclusion
The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet they lean upon Jehovah, and say, Is not Jehovah in the midst of us? no evil shall come upon us. Micah 3:11
PROPHETS WAKE UP! The word of God has a multitude of scriptures about corrupted prophets. Satan wants to derail this generation from entering the Kingdom, and will replace our focus on Jesus with anything that works. But the Lord has given us the tools to stay on track. It's time for us to use them, especially in the prophetic movement. As the Kingdom of God draws near we need to be wise.
Blessings

We had a rather small turn out for the "last" session tonight, and most of those who were there were sick. So we did some healing ministry and left it at that.
So we will be having another "last" session next Thursday- with hopefully more participants in better health!

Holy Spirit, prophecy
There is an awesome outpouring of the Spirit coming that will make Pentecost look tame!
We are heading into a period of unprecedented healing, miracles and prophetic declaration which will grab the attention of unbelievers in a way that mere words never have.
The least assuming of christians will become bold much to their own amazement and that of those around them.
The roles and offices in the church will become fluid, with pastors taking their place amongst others who are equally gifted in the five-fold ministry gifts but who have been ignored in the "pecking order" in the church.
You need to be ready for this. You need to learn to listen to the Holy Spirit, growing in discernment of spirits and the other manifestation gifts.
You need to grow in holiness and in closeness to the Lord.
Seek ever more intimate worship.
Seek to hear the voice of the Lord.
Seek the face of your Father.
Be blessed

worship, Holy Spirit
I've just been sitting at my desk, unwinding with a bit of web browsing when I've just been hit by the Holy Spirit!
The song "Blessed Be The Name of the Lord" by Brian Doerkson (I think from one of the Winds of Worship CDs) came on and firstly it just snatched my attention from what I was looking at on the screen and then it led me into a time of intimate worship with Jesus.
Awesome presence of God!
It's always good when the Holy Spirit interrupts the mundane stuff and intrudes into our consciousness.

Doug Addison: "Power Encounters with God Are Actually Easy"
When we talk about power encounters as a means of reaching people with God's love, many different ideas may run through our heads. Most people don't see themselves as being equipped to have power encounters and may leave this to the more highly gifted. I would like to enlighten you to several ways that most any spirit-filled Christian can engage in a positive power encounter.
The Power of Presence
Power encounters occur when Jesus' followers bring God's power and presence through the Holy Spirit to a person who does not believe or is trapped in darkness by evil forces. There is power in simply bringing the presence of God inside us, in contact with those whom God is drawing to Himself.
In 1 John 1:5, John writes that the message he heard from Jesus and now declares is, "God is Light." Light speaks of the power and life of God's nature. In John 8:12, Jesus states that He is the Light of the world, and the verse finishes by saying that when we follow Him, we will have light as well.
God's presence in us is like a light that shines and distinguishes us from those who do not have this light. We are told to "live as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8). The greater the light and presence of God we release, the more the darkness will be overcome around us.
We are finding that when we intentionally allow the presence of the Holy Spirit to be released through us to touch others, people are drawn and they experience a peace they have not experienced elsewhere. I call this the gift of showing up!
The Power of Jesus' Name
Most Christians are familiar with the fact that Jesus delegated His authority to us and gave us the power of His name. Take note in the following verses to the things that we have been given power to do in the name of Jesus: Matthew 10:7-8, Mark 16:17-18, Luke 9:1-2, and John 14:11-13.
Simply utilizing our God-given authority can dispel darkness and bring the Kingdom of God to earth.
The Power of Process
Oftentimes, we miss the fact that people tend to come to Jesus through a process of circumstances and events. Once we allow Christ to enter our lives and begin to change us, we must go through another process to grow into spiritual maturity. We must deal with issues--opinions, judgments, and wrong beliefs that hinder the presence of God from being released through us.
As we mature, we will grow in faith and in our understanding of the authority God has given us to do the greater works Jesus spoke about. God has patience for this process and will help you as you grow. A great place to start in dealing with this in our own lives is to pray and consider. Ask God to show you a specific course of action that would either allow Him to flow more easily through you, or increase your faith to see miracles.
The Power of Love
We all can demonstrate the power of love. The Bible makes it clear that our enemies are in the spiritual realm and are not the people we are trying to reach (Ephesians 6:12). When we take God's light into spiritually dark places, we are finding that it is best not to pray against the people trapped in darkness, such as psychics. Instead, ask God to bless them and reveal His glory and light to each individual.
We need to learn to act the opposite of satan and his powers of darkness. The Bible describes the enemy as a thief who steals and destroys. Acting opposite would allow us to give freely and bring God's justice. We can pray that God's glory and light and presence be increased. Then darkness is revealed and loses its hold. It is also important to recognize that we ourselves are then protected in that light (1 John 4:4).
A great way to respond to this is to write a simple prayer of blessing you could speak over the places you go. If you have someone specific in mind, write it for him or her.
God wants us to bring His power, love, light, and presence everywhere we go. As we do this, thousands of people will be drawn to Jesus. People are looking for something real.
By simply being ourselves, we can be very effective in sharing God's love.

church, salvation, Holy Spirit
Wow! What a great Sunday morning service this Sunday. Margaret Baxter presented a great sermon, we had excellent worship and ate jelly beans as well!
But the best bit was the number of visitors and the way that God is drawing people in.
We had 6 first-timers this week.
Two were members of the Baxter extended clan. They came because they were related to people who have been coming for some months... no surprises there.
One was a young guy who was there with his girl-friend who is an occasional attender. Interestingly, Tom is someone whom I had previously tutored in maths and/or physics. He was a surprise!
The other three arrived through a long and torturous process. One of them in particular desperately needed to feel God's love. He was someone whom I knew from a long time ago, someone who had been backsliding for a long time. Now he is reaping a terrible harvest: lost business, lost family, lost home, fallen into alcoholism.... listening to his story was like reading the early part of Job. But now, he is recognising that he has to get right with God. He cried all the way through the service.
His sister is also someone who is feeling her way back into church. Margaret got to minister to her for quite some time after church.
A funny part in all this though. The third person in that group was very uncomfortable in the whole deal. He is the boyfriend of the sister, and when she asked him if he wanted to go to church with her, he said "Yes," but it didn't seem to register with him that that was where they were going until they actually came into the building!
God is working all over the place calling his people back to Himself.
Maybe you are like one of these people in our church on Sunday, and you are needing to get back to a living relationship with the living God. Don't delay! Ask God today to take a hold of your life. Ask Jesus to forgive your sins, and commit yourself to following His ways. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to a church or another group of christians who will lead you in the ways of the Lord.
Be blessed

prophecy, Holy Spirit
I want to share about something that troubles me deeply about prophecy. Let me say at the beginning that I love it when God speaks. I would encourage every born again christian to listen for the voice of the Lord. In fact I believe it's a sign of salvation that we hear and recognise the voice of the Holy Spirit. "My sheep know my voice", said Jesus.
What concerns me, though, is that there is a tendency by some people to elevate their revelation to the same level of authority as scripture (sometimes even above scripture). Believe me, this is a dangerous place to be.
On a couple of occasions lately, I have heard people give prophetic words, or descriptions of revelations that they've had, and when a person comments on them and says, "This bit doesn't agree with scripture", or "I don't see that", the response is "But this is a revelation from the Holy Spirit. How dare you disagree with this?"
I just want to throw in a couple of pointers here that will help people work out what is from the Lord and what isn't, so that we will all move in to a closer appreciation of the truth.
1. We are told by Scripture to test all prophecy. 1 Thess 5:19-21:"19 Don’t quench the Spirit. 20 Don’t despise prophesies. 21 Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good." See also 1 Corinthians 14:29. Even the most experienced and accurate of prophets occasionally gets it wrong. Just because someone says "Thus says the Lord" doesn't necessarily mean that the Lord said it! Genuine prophetic words of God will stand up to scrutiny and questioning.
2. No genuine prophecy contradicts scripture. Obvious when stated but not always followed. A so-called prophetic word may quote a scripture and seem to be in agreement with that scripture, yet contradict the overall message of scripture. Remember also that the texts of Scripture were written in Greek and Hebrew not in 16th Century English, or even in 21st Century English and a particular translation may not always be the word of God.
3. Your revelation or prophetic word may be for you or your cell group or your church. It may even be for your nation. That doesn't mean it applies to the whole world! If God tells you to keep on running the race, it is not a contradiction if he tells me at the same time to sit and rest. Openheaven.com, for example, has people reading from all around the world. We should not be surprised if God has different plans for different people in Australia or Zimbabwe as opposed to those in the U.S. If people read something there and they don't receive it, well it's possible that the word is not meant for every living human being.
I don't want to quench the Holy Spirit or anything like that. I really believe from decades of experience of walking with the Holy Spirit that we need to honour the Lord by being honest and mature in the way we deal with all manifestations of the Spirit, including prophecies, revelations, teaching. We need to honour one another also by being honest and gentle with one another.
Blessings

church, Holy Spirit
Today is the day of Pentecost, the day when the church celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 2).
This is the day of equipping of the saints to become the people of God, the day of identity for the church, the day of receiving both the gifts (the power) of the holy Spirit and the fruit (the character) of the Holy Spirit.
So today we pray "Come Holy Spirit. Renew your people. Set us on fire for you and for your kingdom. Amen."
