Nitrogen and Bogs

Plant a tree, save the bogs, use biofuels, and live happily ever after. Well, nothing is as simple as that. Biofuel may well be excellent to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), but it emits plenty of nitrogen oxides (NOx), another greenhouse gas and pollutant, (biofuel possibly emits four times more NOx than natural gas, I have read somewhere).

Texas has in fact banned biodiesel from 31 December 2006. The problem here lies indeed with the fuel’s nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and their contribution to the formation of ground-level ozone in Texas’ eastern counties.

High levels of nitrogenous compounds can make bogs give off more carbon dioxide, thereby adding to the greenhouse effect. This has been shown by the plant ecologist Hakan Rydin in an article published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The amount of carbon contained in peat layers is equivalent to 40-50 percent of the total amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. (See my Northern Bogs and Global Warming)
