Diamonds in Ukraine

<- Modified fragment of USGS map of world geologic provinces. In the southern area of the region seven kimberlite signs were spotted and promising areas of primary deposits of rough diamonds were discovered. In the southwestern area, three lamproite pipes and two kimberlite masses referred to the diamond stones were noticed.
The found rough diamonds are so small yet that they have no jewelry value. The discovered kimberlite pipes may signal that some big deposit of rough diamonds exists in the depth. Last year, the diamond signs were discovered in Kirovograd Region of Ukraine.
Diamonds occur in only two rock types on earth, kimberlites and lamproites. They are as far as I know only found in rocks older than some 70 million years and generally speaking much, much older. Kimberlite occurs in the Earth's crust in vertical structures known as kimberlite pipes. Kimberlite pipes are the most important source of mined diamonds today. Kimberlite pipes are the result of explosive volcanism from very deep mantle derived sources. These volcanic explosions produce vertical columns of rock that rise from deep magma reservoirs, columns also known as "volcanic pipes".A shield is by the way that part of a craton in which the usually Precambrian basement rocks crop out extensively at the surface.
