Illegal Logging & Landslides
Wednesday, 26. December 2007, 19:14:01
Today, on boxing day, at least 80 people were killed after floods triggered landslides in the central Java region of Indonesia - most of them killed in a single landslide. On Java this is probably the worst landslide disaster in 40 years. Indonesia has been repeatedly afflicted by deadly landslides in recent years. I have no doubt that (illegal) logging and a failure to reforest denuded land is largely to blame for the catastrophic result of the floods, although they are triggered by heavy monsoon rain.
Seasonal rains and high tides in recent days have caused widespread flooding across much of Indonesia, the world's fourth most-populous nation. Thousands of houses were inundated Wednesday 26 December 2007, from Java to Sumatra to Sulawesi island, further east.

In Italy we experienced a similar problem near Naples, either in the interior (Sarno)around 1998, either on an islan (Ischia). In Campania there are strong faults on mesozoic carbonates, with at top volcanic recent ashes wich were destroyed by a strong rain.
probably the land denudation is the first problem (if the forest was on, probably phenomena could be lower), but I think that ashes are the basal problem
