What on earth

Nordic Geological Winter Meetings

Apparently two years have gone now since the last Nordic Geological Winter Meeting, which took place in Finland in January 2006. This years venue was Aalborg in Denmark, where I thus spent last week.

Most of the presentations were very interesting, and I had great difficulty in making my choice for the sessions to go to. I will in the following days most probably report on some of the themes, that caught my particular interest, but just now I am trying to sort a few things out and to see them in a greater context. Regional geology (in this case mainly Scandinavian) may often have global implications - and vice-versa of course. (Vice-versa is often mispronounced, as vie-sa ver-sa, and consequently misspelt as visa versa. It should be pronounced vie-si ver-sa - I have been told by an authority on such matters).

Think global, act local. By the way - Think Globally, Act Locally was reportedly coined by David Brower, founder of Friends of the Earth (and, no I am not a member), as the slogan for FOE when it was founded in 1969, although others have stated it was originated by Rene Dubos as an advisor to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972 (from where it later caught my eye in connection with the so-called Brundtland report or Our Common Future from 1987). Canadian futurist Frank Feather also chaired a conference called "Thinking Globally, Acting Locally" in 1979. Others suggested that this phrase is coined by French theologian Jacques Ellul (whom I have never heard of, sorry for my ignorance).

In Norway Gro Harlem Brundtland has lately been in the news by the way, because she lived in France to avoid paying Norwegian taxes (whom with money at stake can blame her). Faced with the indignant cry from Norwegian newspapers, she is now returning to Norway. Here is a heading from Aftenposten of today:
Embattled Gro to move home - Former Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, fending off news reports of lucrative business deals and non-payment of taxes, says she’ll move back to Norway in part to silence her critics.

This became a lot of by-the-ways, sorry, I’ll be back with more on geology next time.
