By all accounts, the newest Sherlock Holmes movie makes the Great Detective something more like an action hero. But geologists have always known Holmes as an exemplar of their working lives—the real world is in the field, where every perception may be evidence and where no detail is too small to ove ...

A side effect of being a scientist is that sometimes they get unduly fixed on their own wrong ideas. Examples that come to mind include Warren Carey and his expanding Earth, Louis Frank and his rain of invisible comets, Marvin Herndon and his uranium core. To that list I must add Robert Folk , who d ...
A paper in the 24 December Nature shows that the deep crust can be an extraordinarily sensitive place: Deep in the San Andreas fault near Parkfield , California, nonvolcanic tremor responds to the daily tides raised by the Moon and Sun. This does nothing for the seismic syzygy theory beloved of geol ...

It shows sunlight reflected off Kraken Mare , a lake of hydrocarbons on Saturn's moon Titan. Kraken and other lakes on Titan are the first bodies of liquid anything ever found off ...

The little troodontid Mei long was justifiably feted as not only a superb specimen of a very young dinosaur but also for apparently preserving behaviour. For those who don’t know, the name means ‘sleeping dragon’ and the animal does appear to be in a very avian-like resting posture with folded up ar ...

The same end-of-year meme that went around last year is back — post the first sentence from the first post of each month — I wondered if doing the same thing as last year was uninteresting but then I couldn’t think of anything else to do, so here it goes: January 2009 : This week’s Friday Field Foto ...

They're a bit fiddly, probably easier by phone/mini blogging, matching the click circle co-ords to the map by knowing the map size... It's possible to mark the events on the map too, by image editing, (but my phone would resize the result to 240width - too small).
