Worst Earthquakes of 20th Century

The deadliest earthquake of the 20th century occurred directly below the million-strong city of Tangshan in northeast China. The official death toll was 242,000 but an estimate of 655,000 may be more likely.

At 3.42 am on 28 July 1976 while most inhabitants were at sleep the earthquake hit the city with a magnitude of 7.8. As this very large earthquake stroke an area where large earthquakes were totally unexpected buildings were not constructed to withstand large shocks and undoubtedly this aggravated the situation.

Also unfortunately a 7.1 magnitude aftershock hit in the afternoon of 28 July 1976.

25 years later (in 1999) it was already impossible to tell that Tangshan, now a quiet industrial city, was once the site of this unfathomable disaster.
