Global Warming, Forests and Carbon Cycle

It has among other things been suggested to plant trees as a remedy to hinder further global warming. Using forests as a carbon sink seems however to be rather tricky and complex. According to a recent article published in Nature (437. 529 – 533, 22 September 2005) extreme temperatures, as under the heatwaves we had in temperate Europe in 2003, make forests emit carbon dioxide. (news at nature.com – Heatwaves spell bad news for carbon sinks). Will the whole world’s carbon cycle be altered over the next 50 years, and where does that lead us?
