Global Warming, Forests and Carbon Cycle

Scientists say it’s not easy to tell if global warming caused hurricanes Katrina and Rita but they forecast more unpredictable weather as Earth gets hotter (cf. Planet Ark).

It has among other things been suggested to plant trees as a remedy to hinder further global warming. Using forests as a carbon sink seems however to be rather tricky and complex. According to a recent article published in Nature (437. 529 – 533, 22 September 2005) extreme temperatures, as under the heatwaves we had in temperate Europe in 2003, make forests emit carbon dioxide. (news at nature.comHeatwaves spell bad news for carbon sinks). Will the whole world’s carbon cycle be altered over the next 50 years, and where does that lead us?
