Earthquake Warning System

Japan plans to launch a seismic alert system next year based on sensors that detect extremely small earthquake waves.
Japan accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
We are not talking about quake prediction, but this early warning system may still give you a few seconds to get prepared for the shaking. Probably enough time to turn off gas, get under a table, halt trains and the like.

It will be interesting to see how well it works. I wonder how exactly they are going to alert us (the residents) about it though. I suppose it will be some kind of alarm system that makes one wet one's pants 15 seconds earlier than one did before... wink

You are absolutely right hefa - a few seconds may not sound like much, but on the other hand it may be enough time for school children to dive under their desks, gas and electric companies to shut down or isolate their systems, phone companies to reroute traffic, airports to halt takeoffs and landings, and emergency providers to pinpoint probable trouble areas. Such actions can save lives and money.

In USA they seem to be working along the same lines -
