What on earth

Earthquake – Lake Tanganyika

Yesterday I was a bit puzzled as to the magnitude of this earthquake. According to U.S. Geological Survey it was 6.8, while other sources talked about 7.5.

The earthquake 55 km south-east of the Congolese town of Kalemie on Monday, 5 December, was a strong earthquake anyway – about 13 km deep. The epicentre was located in Lake Tanganyika. Lake Tanganyika lies in the western branch of the Great Rift Valley. Although East Africa's Great Rift Valley has largely escaped major quakes in recent years one of Africa's most active volcanoes, Nyiragongo, further to the north (at Lake Kivu) destroyed the town of Goma a couple of years ago. The eruption then forced some 300,000 people to flee and destroyed the homes of 120,000. An estimated 100 people were killed.
