What on earth

Wettest Place on Earth

There is a lot of talk about rain and floods these days. I have gathered a few data from various sources, mainly Scandinavian news groups, so they are second hand. The place on our planet with the heaviest average precipitation seems to be Cherrapunjii, Meghalaya, North Eastern India. I have marked the area with a purple dot on the map of India. It is where the eastern arm of the Indian summer monsoon turns westward under influence of the Himalaya range to the north.

It is located 1290 metres above sea level and receives an annual average rainfall of 11 to 12 metres (different sources say around 11.000 mm, 12 m. 1270 cm, 11.874,5 mm). The record is 26.461,7 mm (another source says 25.461 mm) from 1 August 1860 to 31 July 1861.

In 1961 it received 9.300 mm in just one month - in the summer monsoon, July 1961.

Here, in Hongkong, even if we are not the most humid place on the planet, we reach 80% humidity right now...

And it's a dry summer comparing to last year...

I understand your feelings. I was once in Darwin in North Australia, just before the monsoon rain came, when the humidity was close to 100% (something like 98% or 99% I would guess), but no rain coming for days. The locals said that it usually was like that for a couple of weeks every year. Just terrible.

Just keep drinking ;-)
