Daniel Nicolae

Premiile Academiei Americane de film, cunoscute sub numele de Premiile Oscar, sunt premiile decernate în prezent de către această Academie din Los Angeles, California, organizaţie care cuprindea în anul 2005 peste 6000 de membri, toţi profesionişti în diverse specialităţi ale cinematografiei, şi anume producători, regizori, actori, directori de imagine şi mulţi alţii. Premiul, o statuetă care reprezintă un om cu o spadă în mână, se numeşte Oscar pentru că, aşa cum spune legenda, acriţa Margaret Herrick a exclamat la vederea statuetei că semăna cu unchiul său Oscar.
Prima ceremonie de decernare a premiilor Academiei desfăşurată la 16 mai 1929 la hotelul Hollywood Roosevelt, a decurs fără surprize, numele premiaţilor cunoscându-se deja de la 18 februarie. Bob Hope primind premiul Oscar.
Alegerea câştigătorilor se face în două etape. În prima etapă sunt nominalizaţi la Oscar cinci posibili câştigători. Această nominalizare este făcută de membri Academiei care aparţin aceleaşi specalităţi cu cei nominalizaţi.
Astfel, actorii votează pentru actorii ce vor primi nominalizarea, scenariştii pentru scenarişti şi aşa mai departe. În schimb, câştigătorul de la fiecare categorie este ales de către toţi membri Academiei, indiferent de specialitatea acestora din urmă.
Voturile sunt exprimate în secret, de aşa formă ca nici unul dintre membri academiei să nu cunoscă rezultatele. La realizarea scrutinului lucrează o firmă prestigioasă de auditoriu, care este însărcinată să centralizeze voturile.
Până în momentul ceremoniei în care sunt prezentanţi nominalizaţii fiecărei categorii şi este deschis plicul sigilat cu numele câştigătorului, nu se poate ştii despre cine este vorba.
