Lightning in slow motion

, , , ...

Hey y'all,

I was preparing to leave my room for the lecture (hydrometry *shivers*) and just found this video by accident. I never thought it existed! This is the most beautiful lightning video I've ever seen... Check it out.

Auroras

, , , ...

Hi guys!

Just wanted to let you know about the auroras at the moment. Some of sky watchers high in north are witnessing terrific auroras because of coronal hole in the sun, that's causing a strong solar wind. For those who doesn't know how everything is connected, let me explain.

The earth has it's own magnetosphere, which isn't symmetric around it. The magnetosphere is 'compressed' in poles and 'stretched' in equator. Looks something like this. The sun blasts a huge amount of electrons and other small particles (ions, actually) into the interplanetary space and that's called solar wind. This wind changes our planet's magnetosphere, it's shape, to be correct. Then it looks something like this. The particles from the sun are being cought by magnetosphere and they travel to Earth's poles. That's where they meet our planet's ionospehere. The particles from the sun and particles from ionosphere collide, making some combination which has color. That's the aurora. Mostly it's yellowish green, but sometimes you can see some more colors.

Here you can find beautiful pictures. Have fun!

Volcanic Sunsets and Sunrises

, , , ...

Hello everyone :Dhi ,

So I have a new goal to see in my life - a volcanic sunset or sunrise. The view is undoubted awesome. These kind of sunsets/sunrises are caused by eruptions of volcanoes, when they emit a huge amount of ash and sulfur dioxide into the high atmosphere. And when the sun is setting down, it's rays have to travel through an atmosphere that's more dense than usually, then they have a higher chance to be interspersed what makes the sky purple. Usually the sky at a sunset get orange or red, but there's a volcanic sunset we get really intense purple, red and other colors. You can see some photos here (they are not made by me, all taken from SpaceWeather.com):

At the moment after Kasatochi's volcano eruption on 7th of August, random USA and Europe people are witnessing these sunsets/sunrises. Kinda jealous I am!

Anyways, keep in touch and have a good weather!

A change

, , , ...

Hi everyone!

It's been a long time since I've posted something. It's because I haven't witnessed anything worth saying 'wow!' about. So I decided to change the blog a bit. I've decided to talk about not only my own experience, but also what I read, learn and other stuff. Mostly under the 'weather' topic of course. The thing that gave me this thought was this photo, as you can see there, noctilucent clouds and aurora at the same time! Now that's something I wanted to show... So incredible and beautiful.

Some other news are:

Sept. 3rd - 5th. High latitude sky watchers, mark your calendar for auroras.

Source: SpaceWeather
There going to be a high level solar wind those days, so if anyone living more north than me - watch the sky carefully!

I'm actually in decision at the moment should I keep writing this blog in English or should I change the language to Lithuanian, so Lithuanians, keep checking the blog, maybe you'll be pleased!

Anyways, that's it for now,

Have a nice weather!

June 9th-10th, 2008: My first noctilucent clouds

, , , ...

Hello everyone,

I'm so excited! I‘ve seen my very first noctilucent clouds two days ago! I‘m having an exam tomorrow, so didn‘t have time to write a blog. But I want to have a little rest from all those studies now, so decided to talk a bit about my experience.

So two days ago I was talking with my big sister through Skype and told her how I want to see these incredible but harmful to environment clouds. After finishing the conversation, I immediately told my roommate “Hey, let’s take a walk and see some noctilucent clouds!”, because it was after 11.00 PM. She was already trying to sleep but agreed and we went to Vilnius’ downtown. We didn’t expect to see these cloudlets at all and when we saw some bright clouds in the sky some time before 00.00 AM we had some big argue… But after midnight we agreed that our dream came true!

My camera isn’t that good for taking pictures at night, but I put some photos here, you can find them in my gallery.

So anyway, see you soon with some new meteorological experience!
Have a good weather,

May 30th, 2008: My very first 22 degree halo!

, , , ...

Hello everyone,

So here I am again with some incredible meteorological experience! But firstly I would like to inform you, that not every photo upload will be noticed in blogs, so be free to check out my photos section whenever you want, you may be surprised with finding new photos there. In other words – feel free to subscribe!

So anyway, yesterday I saw my very first full 22 degree halo in my life! That was incredible and so beautiful…

I and my best friend decided to go shopping for groceries in different market than usual. We were lazy but had nothing better to do. So as we were in the middle of the way my friend Simona looked up and guess what she said… She was like, “What the hell is that colorful circle around the sun… wait a minute, HALO! “ I was so excited and surprised! Didn’t have my camera at that moment, but I ran home to take it. Thank God I got it in time… I took some pictures. You can see some in my gallery.

Well, one of my dreams/goals in this summer is achieved, yay for me  Wish me luck in other ones!

Have a nice weather,

May 9th and 11th, 2008: Europe Day and Vingis park or my two rainy days

, , , ...

Hey all!

Here I am again with my little blog. First of all, I'll talk about last friday, May 9th. It was a regular friday I'd say. Me and my room mate went to physics lecture planning our day already. After the lecture we rushed to city centre because it was Europe Day, and there was a little nice concert in there. Unfortunately to other people and luckily to us, we caught some warm and nice rain there! And, of course, I had my camera in my hand. Took some nice photos... You can find them in the album named "May 9th, 2008: Europe Day".

The next adventure was last Sunday, May 11th. I and my friend Tomaster went to one of Vilnius' parks - Vingis. I was supposed to pose for him, because it was like a photosession... Well, we planned our meeting like that. But it came out like ordinary meeting...

So anyways, we took some awesome photos! And caught few rains... :D That was a really fun day. You can find photos taken by me here.

Well, nothing unusual, but still. That's all for now, have a good weather!

May 7th, 2008: A surprise for my boyfriend

, , , ...

Hey,

Well, nothing much happened these days, except that me and my best friend decided to make a surprise to my boyfriend. We went to his home by a surprise, we didn't tell him anything. So on the way there we noticed the clouds (of course), I took few photos. It looks like these clouds are so heavy, that they won't hang in there for a long time. Check them out. Oh, and we caught some warm rain going back home... how lovely

I'm not good at recognising clouds yet, but I'm working on it. My future plans this year are to see more haloes, rainbows, lightnings and most importantly - noctilucent clouds. Probobly the most interesting phenomenon that I can see in Lithuania. You can find some photos and description here. And maybe I'll be lucky enough to see 46o halo. Well, wish me luck

We have a little nice ciclone above eastern Europe now, so no VERY interesting stuff is happening in the sky. But the cyclone shouldn't be here for more that few days from now, maybe we'll even see something. You can see a satelite photo (left).

By the way, I forgot to mention last time, that i saw a hail in Kaunas. Unfortunatelly, didn't see any mammatus clouds... Ah well, they are rare after all  I hope I'll see some in my life... Anyways, that hail wasn't very strong, only few minutes of about 0,5 sq.cm. big falling hailstones. We'll have to wait for summer to see something more interesting

After the hail me and my mom managed to get in the same cloud (cumulo nimbus, by the way) by going to see my grandmother. But most surprisingly, in my grandomther's living region there were no rain, so what to talk about hail. Weather can be very surprising sometimes, more than I to my boyfriend...

Anyways, that's all folks. Have a great weather

May 3rd, 2008: "Street Musician Day" and cumulo nimbus

, , , ...

Hi there everyone hi ,

So here I am again with my first blog post about clouds.

There was a huge annual fest in Vilnius last saturday, called "Street Musician Day" (You can check out the description here and some photos at my friend's Tomaster album here) so me and my boyfriend went there to have a little walk in the city center. Saw some incredible artists, listened to beautiful and interesting music and decided to take a rest in one calm place, called "Barbakanas hill" by people, but actually it's historical gates, that are being reconstructed at the moment. Anyway, so we went there to take a rest, to talk about some boy-girl stuff...

Then I noticed some beautiful and very interesting cloudlets in the sky. Then there went awesome huge cumulo nimbus (rain cloud) cloud. We decided we don't want to get caught in intense rain, so we hurried to the local bus stop and got home just in time, because the rain started after few minutes. I truely feel sorry for those musicians that were with their electronic guitars outside

That day I was going home to Kaunas, had a really awesome experience watching the sunset out of bus window... It was really amazing, there were lots of different types cloudlets in the red/orange sky, truely amazig. Unfortunately, I had my camera put in the luggage, so I couldn't take any fotos of the sunset. But I can tell you, it was really awesome.

Anyways, see you soon with some new fotos!

Here I come

, , , ...

Here you go everyone, I finally started my meteorological blog... Sounds scary, huh? It actually isn't. It's going to be about my meteorological experience. I take photos of clouds, optical phenomena and other weather-like stuff in the nature. Now you can find in my albums photos I took till last thursday, 1st of May, 2008. Nothing much, just simple not edited (mostly) photos and descriptions about my experience in weather phenomena.

I guess I should introduce myself at first. You can find my short introduction in my "About" page, but I'll also post it here:

I'm a university student in Vilnius University, Lithuania. I'm studying the course, named "Hydrology and meteorology" and I'm surely happy about choosing it (For those who doesn't know these disciplines I'll paste some wikipedia information down below).
Originally I'm from Kaunas, second biggest city in Lithuania, but now I've mooved to Vilnius, our capital city, because of studies. I'm from normal but divorced family, having one sister who's 12 years older than me. She's living in US with her husband, I hope to visit her as soon as possible. I have a cat in my home in Kaunas, that I totally adore. Well, that's all. All these stuff mainly describes me.
