The Costs of War

Follow the US human and monetary costs of the War in Iraq.

Sadly, this data does not reflect the cost to other countries embroiled in this travesty along with us. I've added Iraqi civillian death toll data, but I've seen estimates ten times as high as what's is reflected here.

it is heart braking to see the statistics
I was working in something similar for the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war. By the end of it I had a sick feeling.:frown:
thank you for bringing once more awareness of this night mare !

It's coincidental that the 4000th military fatality occurred recently, the aniversary of the war occurred recently, and I was thinking about this recently, but it's hard to ignore the momentum of this confluence of events in my life.

Thank you for sharing.

ellinidata 6. April 2008, 02:20

unfortunately this is an event that brings out wonderful country 500 behind in time,
our reputation in the world lower than it was
and a debt of over a trillion,
that even out grandchildren will continue paying.
http://my.opera.com/ellinidata/blog/sad-facts-about-the-iraq-and-afghanistan-war
As for the deep pain of the families that are directly effected ,
no statistics
and no compensation can make any difference.
To them bringing back our troops is the only answer.
http://my.opera.com/ellinidata/blog/when-is-it-going-to-end
I just hope that we do it in a smart way (for a change)
and we don't leave more chaos than what we created already.:frown:

How dare you post a sticky and make me have to scroll to see the rest of your blog? :irked:

(Just teasin', of course. I have a sticky, myself. I was unaware of your hatred for them.)

On topic - the number of deaths thus far is mind boggling. How many more people need to die 'til we finally pull out of there?!

rhona 6. April 2008, 06:29

Sad!!

noah counte 6. April 2008, 23:26

It's not sticky notes that bother me so much as their over use. I just don't like having to scroll down nine screens to find the new stuff!

And the number of deaths is horrifying. The number of wounded is equally so. I heard from a parent f a wounded soldier who is in Walter Reed (VA Hospital) in the DC area, that the hotel that is part of the complex, which was once used to host parents and family of wounded vets who were hospitalized is now completely full of wounded soldiers, and family must stay off-site.

And those "wounded" figures include only physical injuries. How many more are suffering mental distress as a result of their service?

ripp2002 7. April 2008, 03:26

This is good!

thatgirl 10. April 2008, 14:10

War, yeah never good thing. when you get one saying the other is wrong and not do what they want they go to war. I not saying this is right or wrong but its the civillians who pay the higher price

I_ArtMan 11. April 2008, 17:04

make love not war.

ellinidata 11. April 2008, 18:47

hi Scott!
I am glad to see you back!
Are you a Mendocino County member???

I_ArtMan 12. April 2008, 05:36

i was in mendocino in 1964, totally lost my mind that year. you could say it was my wildest year. i thought i was orestes... i wore only one sandal and told fortunes with half a deck of cards.
i had a convertible and no money. the girls loved me... for some strange reason.

ellinidata 12. April 2008, 11:45

haha , I thought so!
the young girls love card tellers, convertibles and sleep under the stars!
by the way
1964 was a great year!
(I was born May 1st!
during the time of love ):D

I_ArtMan 12. April 2008, 21:17

cool.

tamarabxx 23. April 2008, 22:25

I am floored by the numbers!!!! How sad...Wasn't it just a few months ago President Bush (I thought he was a tree, not a bush...) was talking about pulling out? The President is on the naughty list as far as I'm concerned. I am not a Bush fan! Yet, I have no idea who to vote for....this may be the first year I don't vote. Thanks for putting the numbers out there for us!!! YOU ROCK!!!

ellinidata 23. April 2008, 23:06

never trust men when they say" I am pulling out".

I_ArtMan 23. April 2008, 23:40

noah counte 24. April 2008, 00:43

LOL. I think "Mission accomplished!" was the sign behind him - over two years ago, now. John McCain is talking about a 100 year plan, while the so-called "liberals" are trying to figure out how to get out post haste. This war has turned the lables of the 90s (liberal and conservative, as if they had meaning) on their heads. I saw a quote from Hillary Clinton the other day that didn't just open the door for invading IRAN, it assured invasion, in certain circumstances. You can't tell the Hawks form teh Doves anymore, that is for sure.

Tamara, as a Texan, you must have had some sense of what was coming after he screwed up your state as badly as he screwed up that oil comany and the Rangers.

I just put up an Iraqi civillian death counter that clams something under 100,000. I've seen estimates as high as ten times that many - verification is a bear, since the military refuses to count for public relations reasons. Even if there was some tie to 9/11 in Iraq, it's hard to defent trading our 3400 to 100,000. Or a million.

Doesn't really matter where the dead count is - it's too high, and horrifyingly depressing.

noah counte 24. April 2008, 14:43

Big news out of the Senate this week on the attempted suicide rate of vererans - the number reported by the VA appears to be off by well over 1000%. The VA reported 800 attempts per year, and the actual number is closer to 12,000. One of my favorite Senators is on the case, so we can expect to hear more about it. Go Patty Murray!

Support American War Veterans.

In 2005, 815,915 people attempted suicide in the US (32,637 people were successful).

Here's something interesting (horrifying): men commit suicide at a rate almost four times that of women, but women attempt suicide three times as often as men.

There are more suicides in the US each year than murders.

I_ArtMan 24. April 2008, 19:23

what astounds me is the universal disregard for the right to live. i wonder sometimes what a soldier tells himself when the battle begins.

i can only guess that it must be something like "every one of them i kill is one less that will have a chance to kill me."

i am still puzzling over the statistics you posted in your comment noah.
math is not my strong point but it looks like roughly, one out of twenty four attempts at suicide are successful... that makes me wonder a lot.

"Here's something interesting (horrifying): men commit suicide at a rate almost four times that of women, but women attempt suicide three times as often as men."

can't seem to get my head around that one.

we certainly do live in interesting times.

ellinidata 24. April 2008, 19:32

@ Tamara,
any voted President in his worst day will do better that what Bush did in his best day!
Vote it is your right.Exercise it.
That's the only reason I became an American citizen.
All my benefits were available to me with a green card.
A born American who doesn't vote is an American that doesn't do his part for a change.

noah counte 24. April 2008, 19:38

Here's where I found my stats, Scott: http://www.suicidology.org

You are right - according to this source, roughly on in 25 attempts is successful.

lokutus_prime 29. April 2008, 12:24

noah: I've written a few words about this ghastly war (and about war, per se). If you have time and inclination you'll find my comments at http://my.opera.com/lokutus_prime/blog/war-poems-an-anthology

I'm very glad you post. Keep up the good work here in your articulate and fine blog  Thanks.

Tabmartel 7. May 2008, 22:24

I don't believe we know the whole story, or actual losses!
Who believes the media!
Great blog!

noah counte 8. May 2008, 01:39

I doubt we will ever know the full story, or the actual losses - great point.

Thank you for the compliment, and then you for visiting.

daxonmacs 18. May 2008, 07:03

It clearly shows who pays for the war, and the industry behind it.
I fail to see what the postal officer's son is doing in Iraq.
After all Saddam got instated with us help, back in the days.
Sad numbers, and climbing too high, too fast.

ellinidata 18. May 2008, 11:07

"I fail to see what the postal officer's son is doing in Iraq"

when the postal office's son wanted an education and had no funds to pay his tuition the army did pay for his education
what "the postal officer's son" didn't know was that he will become an educated invader.
Non of the poor kids knew that by enlisting they will end up paying back their college tuition with their lives.
That's why the American people do support the troops. They are the young kids with dreams that end up in a coffin. :frown:

daxonmacs 18. May 2008, 11:52

Better send the sons of bush and the likes and oil billionairs to the front line to guarantee "their" future wealth and "earnings".

ellinidata 18. May 2008, 11:55

if their kids were there ,
the war would have been over a long time ago

Education is not free in our country,
rich people do not need the army to pay their way to college , poor kids do.

daxonmacs 18. May 2008, 11:56

Nothing is free, money or not.
Price tags are always hard to read.

ellinidata 18. May 2008, 12:04

Life should never had a price tag.
Let's hope and pray that parents will have their kids alive back home soon .

The war in Iraq is so unreal... I can't believe it's happening.

ellinidata 31. May 2008, 18:56

Martin,
the American people
don't want this war either ,
we are very sad. (at least the 85% of the US citizens ) :frown:

martinouellette 31. May 2008, 20:09

85% ? Could be.... now.

ellinidata 31. May 2008, 20:27

I know :frown:
It took some Americans 8 years to see who they voted for,
and 5 years to realize there is a war going on that destroys many lives

at least they wake up,
this nightmare took way too long and it's not even close to the end :frown:

martinouellette 31. May 2008, 20:30

sadly... :frown:

Let's all depress and get drunk.

DBabbit 7. July 2008, 03:49

Great post, Noah,
I've been trying to keep my eye on it, but lost my contacts when TagWorld.com changed their user format. Thanks for link. When Bush #1 was elected and failed to improve the economy, we should have realized the apple (Bush II) wouldn't fall far from the tree.

And, With Bush running the show and waving his pen like it's a magic wand, are we even going to have a next election, or will he decide there's a national emergency and therefore, the election will be put off? He's now saying we need to work on the economy - I want to see him turn it around in 5 months - The Democratic party failed us when Pelosi promised to impeach him and then renigged on the deal.

No matter which president is next elected - if we get that chance - the first thing the new president should do is bring our men & women home - or pull the extra 1 million plus out of the rest of the bases and put them in Iraq to help with the shortage.
http://www.alternet.org/story/47998/

I'm voting for Obama - McCain is war hungry and we've spent way too much on it.

@Tamara - vote - It doesn't matter who you pick - everyone who is able to needs to with this upcoming election!

lokutus_prime 7. July 2008, 09:14

God speed you on! We "who hang breathless on the fate" of all these things and who are helpless to influence the domestic vote in your country depend on your reasoning and your choice. It so happens that I would vote the same way there, if I could.

Loku
UK citizen

DBabbit 7. July 2008, 10:36

Loku  to you - If all UK citizens got a dual passport, we could use the extra help!

noah counte 7. July 2008, 12:27

Thanks for weighing in, Babs. I agree - voting is the duty of everyne who is able.
