Hanging around in a one horse town

Randomania

,

My life is full, lately. But not so full I can't give you a little randomness to brighten your day. Hehe. I hope. Enjoy!

  • Tivo is losing customers at a pretty astounding rate. They'll have to do something to stem the tide of customers who are heading to Direct TV's digital recording service. Personally, it doesn't make a lot of difference to me which who succeeds or fails. Or if either or both succeed or fail, for that matter. But it does shine a light on teh fact that customer service matters. Discussions I've seen or had recently about a) mobile companies, b) cable companies, c) land-lnie telephone companies, and more, all suggest that people are fed up. Tiebout said that people "vote with their feet," and this downturn in in Tivo's market share underscores that they take their pocket books with them.
  • If you're a Linux user, you know that one of the joys is having multiple desktops. Multipe shortcut collections, multiple wallpapers, the whole nine. Now you can enjoy the same luxury in Windows, too.
  • Wind energy may sound like a great idea, but there are still some things to work out. You know, like how to get that energy from the turbine farm to the consumer...
  • Clayton County, GA School District loses accreditation. First time in 40 years that's happened in the US. 50,000 students, and no plan. Check out the headline by a proud graduate of the underperforming district.
  • Don't get stuck out in public with no place to "go." Use Diaroogle.
  • Powerful ToDo List for your thumbdrive. Multilevels (subtasks) and everything!
  • Free Shiznit:
  • Keep hydrated, and do the environment and your body a favor: safe reusable water bottles.
  • Mind map your computer. Cool navigation tools on your desktop: The Brain. If you haven't seen this type of associative linking, you can see something similar in action at LivePlasma, or Music Map. You can download the Brain to your desktop, you can share it with your friends, and it's free. You lose some functionality after 30 days, if you choose not to pay, but the basic version is feature rich. Read the list of features.
  • If you need to edit audio files, you can use Audacity, which is free, and has a ton of bells and whiles. Or, you can use Wavepad Sound Editor, which is free, and easy to use.
  • You know how, when you use google maps or yahoo maps, you get a map with a bunch of little pushpins showing the locations of things? You can create your own googlemaps, and define your own push pins. Very cool!
  • Too many dropped calls? Don't have so many car accidents.
  • A health care advisor for the McCain campaign told the Dallas Morning News that no one in the US is uninsured, because we can all go to the emergency room. You know, because some emergency rooms are not allowed to turn people away for financial reasons. Genius. More than that, because we can all get emergency care, we should stop citing statistics that reflect less than 100% health care coverage. Suddenly, we have the best coverage in the world! Another shining example of redefining fauilure as success. The McCain campaign wisely said "he's not an official advisor."
  • The ultimate personal organizer? Let Chandler organize your life - and it's free!
  • This kills me. The traffic 'copter caught an idiot doing something stupid, and derides him for a minute and 41 seconds. I must say, I'm with the traffic reporter on this one. On the plus side, he seems to have done major damage to his car.
  • Hard times for Starbucks. The good news is, there's something in it for you. Like specials in the afternoon. If you visited in the morning. And kept your receipt. And want an iced coffee.
  • Kitsap County is sort of south and west of Seattle. You have to drive around or swim across Puget Sound to get there. And once you are there, you discover that hillbillies aren't the sole purvue of Appalaccia. Finally, someone is doing her civic-minded best to end the party in back.
  • "Jesus loves me, this I know,
Gimme $10 worth of gas to go!"
  • If you've lost a a pair of burning pants, police in York, Maine would like a word with you.
  • Telemarketer has a bad day. Caller ID makes it worse.
  • Politics make for strange bedfellows, and even stranger hospital roomates. "They went to yelling and bumping bellies," and then things got ugly...
  • Pittsburgh is sued for not allowing exercise. Well, you know there's more to it than that. It's pole dancing as exercise. Weird, since Pittburgh has its share of all nude models working at adult book stores.
  • Republicans at county fair in Washington State stoop to a new low.
  • Woman diagnoses cancer in internet friend's baby just by looking at a photograph, and saves the baby's life. How cool is that?
  • DIY:
  • If God really loves the Republicans, why is he sending a Hurricane named Gustav to interrupt their Convention? President Bush might miss his speech, because of the storm.
  • "Happy birthday to me,
    Happy Birthday to me,
    Happy birthday, happy birthday...
Hey, do you like my birthday suit?
    I'm Jesus Christ!"
  • Democrats in Denver for the Convention aren't visiting strip clubs. The politicians' advance teams were a little more responsive last week, though.
  • There were 4,000 delgates in Denver for the Democratic National Convention. And 15,000 reporters. Wonder what all those journalists were up to?
  • Seems there's a Swedish Sea Monster. Take that, Nessie!
  • Hey gents: turn off the seat warmer, your boys can't swim in that sauna.
  • I don't normally tell criminals how to do their job, but this fellow needs some help. Hey Jason, if you have hostages, don't send them out for beer. Some of them probably won't be trustworthy, and may not come back.

Last, but not least, if you live outside the US, and can't access some YouTube videos that people post links to, here's a work-around that takes you from the video hosted on the display page to one meant for embedding. Most YouTube URLs look something like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEOID
VIDEOID represents a string of identifying characters. Replace the "watch?tv=" with "v/", so that the URL looks like this:
http://www.youtube.com/v/VIDEOID
They aren't as restrictive with embedded files as they are with the ones people view at their site.

The thing with the water bottles just seems soooo paranoid.

I prefer audacity, really... not that I used it too much.

"In one particularly unfortunate case a driver cleaning his handgun was killed when the weapon discharged due to a head on collision." uh... what was he doing? Was he in a hurry to shoot someone, or what?

The one with the traffic 'copter... should we laugh, or should we cry? Meh. I'll laugh

Paying for gas to show god's love... uh... what? Someone see something... off... there? Nice rhyme, BTW.

Burning pants? What caused that? Too much spicy food?

The mason jar lights are interesting, though one of their steps was kinda weird. Instead of taping the LEDs and then bending them, why not do it the other way around? It would be a lot easier.

The point of the "hard to open jar" is the vacuum that is created inside. I just use a knife to do the same thing as shown here. You just let the pressure equalize.

A nintendo lunch box? I wouldn't be to suprised to see Nintendo selling things like that soon.

President Bush missing a speech? Guess we'll just have to wait a bit more for him to make an ass out of himself in public. Though, I bet it won't be long.

"While the researchers did not test the quality or quantity of the volunteers' sperm..." WTF? That really makes it a scientific study, huh?

Sending hostages to fetch beer? Brilliant, simply brilliant.

And thanks for the last tidbit of info. I tested it on the link you posted on Melissa's page a while a go. It worked! But the video is no longer available
I remember that they had something similary stupid quite a while a go too. Seems they changed it into... well... almost the same thing.

qlue 29. August 2008, 19:04

I gotta try some of those links.

edwardpiercy 29. August 2008, 20:04

This orphanage saved over $210,000 last year by switching to Soup Night.

Bad news is, Soup Night is every damn night.

******

"Republicans at county fair in Washington State stoop to a new low."

The ironic thing is, the worthless $3 bill is now up to $6.75 on eBay.

ellinidata 29. August 2008, 20:53

this is what I call "link paradise" ! thanks!

ripp2002 29. August 2008, 21:03

WOW, that is a long list :eyes:

edwardpiercy 29. August 2008, 21:45

Hey, BTW, cool new RECENT VISITORS look. Did you come up with the CSS for that yourself?

Nerak 29. August 2008, 21:55

• Diaroogle totally flippin' pwns! Too bad I didn't know of it right after I had my galbladder removed! :eyes:

• I've used Freecycle before...did a layout for a woman for free.

• I have some sheets to soften!

• Mason jar lights? :eyes: I have a ton of those jars!

• I'm all over making the floppy disk bag thingy!

• Sunny is ALWAYS getting splinters. Pumice, here we come!

:o: Starbucks

• My Dad taught me how to hotwire vehicles when I was in 6th grade.

• Isn't Jesus' birthday on December 25th?

• Nessy's in Sweden now? What a run-around-Sue!

• That Nintendo thing pisses me right the heck off. :irked: How dare they trash an NES like that?! BLASPHEMY!!

Totally badass version of Randomania©! :headbang:

daxonmacs 30. August 2008, 00:35

No starbucks here yet.
Chandler's looking good as is the multiple desktops.
Diaroogle is an example of creative thinking hehe. I wonder where and when they got the idea.
Nice post.
And a long one, too.

Nerak 30. August 2008, 00:38

Homer: Doh! No Starbucks?!

daxonmacs 30. August 2008, 00:56

Not as far as I know, but plenty of cars to hotwire. :D
Also no idea whether Diaroogle works here. Judging by the amount of crap on the pavements. I'ld say it isn't intensely used so far.

noah counte 30. August 2008, 01:19

Dax caught a bad link, which I've fixed - the thumbdrive todo list. Thanks, Dax! I'm with you on Chandler, too. I am definately going to be trying that out in a serious way. Outlook does a ton of stuff, but I'm never happy with the way it looks, or the steps I have to take to get things done.

Nice to see you Archon: I like Audacity, too. I used to use it for work, a lot. I don't use it much anymore, but I may again, if I ever get the gumption to move my cassette collection to MP3. I hope the YouTube workaround is helpful. It was you who prompted me to include it, on the thread you referenced. I got it from a Google Developer Blog.

Karen: You might try tape on small splinters, too. I figured you'd be all over the DIY stuff. I expected the lunchbox to be less offensive, and a lot more cool. I posted some other Diaroogle-like sites some time back. Immodium sponsors one of them. It just cracks me up, the information you can find online.

Edward: The orphanage was always conscious of the ottom line. I did not come up with the CSS for the recent visitors on my own, but I tweaked it for this theme. I can't remember where I snagged it, but I remember having some trouble with alignment.

Thank you, Angeliki.

Aadil, I hope there is something for you here. I don't post much for Phonies, btu there is some other fun to be had, too (aside from downloads and such).

Ripp: Now that you go to a real college, you're going to have to read more. I'm just breaking you in. Of course, your wireless access will read as fast as you do, now...

Nerak 30. August 2008, 10:42

Sorry I'm such a party pooper about the NES lunchbox.

:sst: No pun intended...what, with all the Diaroogle talk. :left:

noah counte 30. August 2008, 12:19

No worries. You don't poop very many parties.

noah counte 30. August 2008, 13:32

I misunderstood Dax. And I've corrected the bad link... now you can get your free magazines.

daxonmacs 30. August 2008, 14:01

Thanks Matt, I'm such a stingy person :D
Just so you know

And quite a bunch of magazines they have too, nice find

Nerak 30. August 2008, 22:03

Thanks to Oops! I Crapped My Pants, you're right!

daxonmacs 30. August 2008, 22:05

We may lack diaroogle here, but we sure have our imodium at hand

Nerak 30. August 2008, 22:07

:lol::yes:

lekrot 30. August 2008, 22:45

Great post, lots of useful knowledge  from my favorite librarian :D

noah counte 31. August 2008, 01:41

Thanks, Torkel!

Karen, here's a heads up for you: if you're at home, and you're by yourself, no one need know that you crapped your pants.

No worries, Dax. I'm glad to have all the links right. I draft in an html editor, so I can be sure my tags are all correct, but it doesn't catch when I miscopy a URL (though I think it is a hiccup in my laptop - I sometimes copy the URL two or three times, and it doesn't get to the clipboard). I just miss the errors, sometimes.

Nerak 31. August 2008, 02:08

daxonmacs 31. August 2008, 05:34

No worries Matt, it's working now, and I got plenty compensation for the wait.
I miss a lot of spelling, grammar and voc, because the computer doesn't speak english
I noticed your posts were well aestethic
^^( this is worth a load of porn mag's hehe )
Little webpages each one of them
What editor do you use btw?

noah counte 31. August 2008, 15:08

I use Scintilla/Scite, an open source multi-language editor. It color codes tags for html, css, and dozens of languages.

daxonmacs 31. August 2008, 16:30

Color code tagging is a cool feature for a (html)editor.
Gonna take a look at it later.
Good thinking of you to use one, especially with recurring columns.

noah counte 1. September 2008, 01:00

Scite requires that you hand code, and check your progress in appropriate browsers (no WYSIWYG), but it gives you a lot of control, especially as regards incomlete tags.

There is a Windows version and a Linux version.

daxonmacs 1. September 2008, 03:27

Thanks for the link Matt

noah counte 1. September 2008, 04:26
