Hanging around in a one horse town

Hey Goombah!

I saw a commercial on television for some Italian eatery or other this evening, and it contained the song "Mambo Italiano." It's been done by a lot of talented performers (and some not so talented performers) since it was written in 1954.

The biggest seller was released in 1954 by Rosemary Clooney, produced by Mitch Miller.

Dean Martin - "Mambo Italiano" [Link for phonies]

Sopia Loren did a burlesque routine to "Mambo Italiano" in "It Started in Naples" in 1960. I can't find a clip of it, but if you want to see her mambo, she did it in "Pane Amore" in 1955. Check it out.

I'm not a huge fan of Bette Midler, but I love her version:

There are others. I would have liked to include Groove Armada's version, for example, but I couldn't find it.

Enjoy!

Nice song, I like it. I like very much your blog, thanks for being at mine. How have you been my dear friend ?

noah counte 18. March 2009, 03:30

I've been getting by, but not getting ahead. It's always nice to see you, my friend - I hope you are doing well, too? Thank you for stopping by

Awesome song! Two posts in one day with killer music. It's almost like Christmas all over again...but I guess St. Patrick's Day is like Christmas for Irish people like you! :hat:

What a great artist Rosemary Cloony was !
her amazing spirit was always contagious
The Mambo Italiano was loved not only by Italian Americans but for
from all people that appreciated a happy and a vibrant tune!

"Rosemary recorded 25 albums for Concord Jazz and maintained a busy touring schedule up until her cancer surgery in January 2002. In the year preceeding her death, she had toured in England, Dublin, Honolulu, New York City, and many cities in between."

thanks for reminding me of a great artist that was way much more than a singer

CheliC 18. March 2009, 21:03

Rosemary Clooney and Dean Martin are two of my favorite singers from the 50s. Thanks for sharing the tune.

noah counte 18. March 2009, 21:11

My pleasure.

Shaunak 19. March 2009, 00:16

Dean Martin, one of my favourite artists. My favourite Dean Martin song is "Volare".

I had never heard him sing the Mambo Italiano before.

Thanks a bunch for sharing the link!

noah counte 19. March 2009, 00:36

You're very welcome. I heard Ricardo Montalban sing "Volare" before I heard Dean Martin sing it. I like Dean Martin way better!

Nerak 19. March 2009, 00:40

Ricardo Montalban sings? :eyes: I had no idea. I will have to YouTube it or something just so I can hear how good or bad he sounds. :D

noah counte 19. March 2009, 00:49

I'll have to see if I can root it out. It may be my imagination.

Nerak 19. March 2009, 00:52

In that case, I really want to hear it!

noah counte 19. March 2009, 00:58

Hahah. It sounds way better than most of the other voices...

Nerak 19. March 2009, 02:24

Well, that pretty much goes without saying!

noah counte 19. March 2009, 03:31

It reeks of Corinthian leather.

qlue 19. March 2009, 03:32

Damn! :eyes:. I haven't even listened to the tracks you linked yet and the song is already stuck in my head! :irked:. (or rather, the refrain is)

qlue 19. March 2009, 03:37

Looking for the banana boat song on you tube I found this .

noah counte 19. March 2009, 03:41

Hahaha. Funny the proximity in which youtube places things.

Nerak 19. March 2009, 03:57

It reeks of Corinthian leather.

Bwahahahaha!!!

That was so funny!

edwardpiercy 19. March 2009, 21:21

"It reeks of Corinthian leather"

LMAO.

But it has the velvety quality of sumptuous velour. p:

I had to do the Dino one. I guess you don't have to go to school to score with the babes. Interesting.

And I had to check Sophia out just to see what was shakin.

Blonde 0, Brunette 1.

Made guys in the background, 87.

noah counte 20. March 2009, 01:35

I think Sophia Loren does that to guys without moving anything but her eyes. When the whole of her moves like that...

I forgot what I was going to say.

qlue 20. March 2009, 01:44

Precisely!.

noah counte 20. March 2009, 01:50

wickedlizard 23. March 2009, 14:12

 for some strange reason this song reminds me of one on Romance and Cigarettes movie. :D

noah counte 23. March 2009, 19:38

I like Kate Winslet more and more every time I see her.

wickedlizard 23. March 2009, 19:44

 perv....

noah counte 23. March 2009, 19:52

I've been called worse p:

H82typ 22. April 2009, 13:40

I think William Shatner sings a version of that, too! >.<

noah counte 22. April 2009, 18:55

Using "William Shatner" as the subject in a sentence which uses "sang" as the verb might get you thrown out of the club.

H82typ 22. April 2009, 19:39

Aha. Well, using it in it's broadest sense, of course... it might be construed as singing. :worried:

noah counte 22. April 2009, 19:47

Even his singing can't be construed as singing!

gabrielabelle 22. April 2009, 20:34

the latest version of Mambo Italiano is from the French actor Gerard Darmon....pas mal....

noah counte 22. April 2009, 20:39

I saw that (and thought it a clever video) - and everyone else can see it, too - but I didn't recognize Gerard Darmon. Catchy, no?

H82typ 22. April 2009, 22:50

 Well, Shatner is just as good an actor, as he is a singer, then. :left:

noah counte 23. April 2009, 02:18

He prefers "thespian".

H82typ 23. April 2009, 06:28

*gasp* I never noticed he had a lisp! :yikes:

Dacotah 23. April 2009, 07:27

Happy Birthday Matthew. :hat:

noah counte 23. April 2009, 11:20

Hahaha. He's a rascally fellow, Dennis!

Thank you, Carol.

Dacotah 23. April 2009, 12:30

You are welcome Matthew.

Quinnuendo 23. April 2009, 15:59

Happy birthday Matt

Haven't been around much (obviously), but wanted to reply to some topics earlier, so here is something on topic:
I've known the song for a while, and have some new version around, but it was filed under "Various artists" on a compilation, and now I can't remember who did it.
I also like the Midler version...

noah counte 23. April 2009, 19:47

Hi Donny, it's nice to see you  It might be the Gerard Darmon version you are thinking of?

Quinnuendo 23. April 2009, 21:41

I don't think so, but maybe...
It has a female vocal with a lively arrangement, there are (I guess?) two guys throwing in Italian stuff in the background... I'll try to dig up the info...

noah counte 23. April 2009, 22:00

Ysabelle Brave does a version, though I don't think it's avaialable anymore. Groove Armada does a version I haven't heard, but they feature other artists when women do lead vocals, I think.

Maybe the Lido Brothers, featuring Maria?

I'm out of guesses.

redjava 3. May 2009, 17:30

he he he... now i can't get that song out of my head... thanks! P:

noah counte 4. May 2009, 01:04

Haha. My job here is done p:

redjava 4. May 2009, 01:42

damn you... p: you did it again! lol

noah counte 4. May 2009, 02:11

It's a gift. (lol)
