In My Head

Heh. And soon to be in yours! I don't know how it got there today, but it's been rattling around for hours. It was nominated for a Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form, in 1995 (it lost to "Love Is Strong" by the Rolling Stones), and I remember enjoying it at the time...

Bradley Nowell, RIP

,

As an interim post in my series (of one, so far) of posts about Ska, I wanted to take a moment to remember Bradley Nowell, the lead singer of Sublime, on the 12th anniversary of his death by heroin overdose.

It's Friday....

Where are the covers, Matthew? Well, there is one at the end of this brief post. I've got a lot planned, I just haven't had time to get it all together, so please bear with me. In the meantime, I hope you'll enjoy one of my favorite artists, Poe.

I Don't Know Where

,

No clue where this came from, but it's suddenly playing on my desktop. It's also fostering great memories of a concert I attended in Alpine Valley, WI, where they opened for the English Beat in about 1985.

Say What?

At the risk of leading you to the conclusion that I listen to nothing but 70s funk, here's a short set of exactly that.

I've got 2 Tone and 3rd Wave Ska coming, and a bunch of ska covers, too. Hopefully, it will be up this week - things are hectic here. If not, it's a long weekend! w00t!

1976

,

1976 came up in conversation, this evening. I remember going to a middle school dance that year, and watching a girl shimmy to "December, 1963 (Oh What a Night)" by the 4 Seasons. I still remember her name, and how she turned my adolescent hormones all higgledy-piggledy. The list of top 40 hits for 1976 includes a bunch of diso, a lot of soul, some bland music, and this list of heavier stuff. Ah, memories!

Ska. Lots of Ska

,

This may interfere with my usual Friday Covers schedule, but I don't care. I like ska. I hope you will too, because I've gone crazy! This post is entirely about the ska of Jamaica in the 60s, but I've got another post coming about the second and third waves of ska. On top of that, I've got at least two, probably three or four ska covers posts partially ready. If you don't like this stuff, you're going to hate me soon!

Excuse the typos, I haven't had the time to recheck this as carefully as I'd like

Word Up!

, , ,

Nothing long or drawn out, today. It's just the soundtrack to my Saturday, and it's a lot like being stuck in "Muppets In Space." Very cool, but a little disconcerting.
