Tuxedo Moon

Henry, in another corner of the web, reminded me of a great love that, it turns out, we share - for for the past 20 years!

Tuxedomoon is a post punk/new wave/avant garde band that formed in San Francisco in the late 70s, though they spent a good deal of time in Rotterdam, according to people I met in Amsterdam who supposedly palled around with various members (who came and went), and then Brussels.

They scored a Maurice Brejart ballet, "Divine," opened for Devo, and released 17 or so albums.

It's been some time since I posted a cover song, and when this one popped up on my Last FM playlist, I figured the time was nigh!

Wicked Cop Out

I haven't dropped a covers post in about a while. Today is just one song, but it's pretty good, and there are a couple of pretty good covers of it. I've not included any live versions, mostly because of sound quality. There are some good live versions around.

Commercial Songs

, ,

Virtually all songs are commercial. I mean, why make it, if you don't want people to listen to it? Some songs are used to pander to the masses, though, and this post is about a few of them. Some of them you might have heard and wondered "who did that," and some of them you'll recognize. They are all songs I like, and maybe you will (or do) too. See how you like these songs that have provided a musical tapestry for some of our favorite products - and some of our least favorites. Sadly, my favorite TV ad tune was used in a Public Broadcasting System promo for PBS Kids, NRBQ's "Only You," but I can't find it online. When I do, I'll post it.

Livin' La Vida Loca

Conversation elsewhere brings me to this - The Toy Dolls, one of my favorite bands of the eighties, coving Ricky Martin's sole post-Menudo US hit, "Livin' La Vida Loca." Of course, it's always a circuitous route to anywhere with me - the conversation was actually about the improprieties of work, but quickly (de)generated into talk of Antonio Banderas, who does an amusing version of "Livin' La Vida Loca" with Eddie Murphy. The magnificence of the Banderas not withstanding, I love the Toy Dolls, and around here, you eat what I serve, or you go hungry. Heh.

It's Friday....

Where are the covers, Matthew? Well, there is one at the end of this brief post. I've got a lot planned, I just haven't had time to get it all together, so please bear with me. In the meantime, I hope you'll enjoy one of my favorite artists, Poe.

Friday Covers

Hey hey! I'm done, and it's only Thursday! Today there is (maybe) less music and more writing than usual. So sue me!

I've tried to place links to videos, where possible. People on cell phones apparently have difficulty with flash (all the Seeqpod stuff), but Qlue has found a way to get the video content converted. Not all the videos are of the bands - some of them are just the songs with video content created by someone else. I did my best.

Friday Covers

Hey! Its' really Friday! This is really the second bunch of songs in the group I started to share in Tuesday's post. There's still at least one more group to post before I have to think about what to do next again.

It's an eclectic group today, with no real stars, save the one from outside the US. Also, again, there is no theme here, except that I like them.
