Hey Goombah!

I saw a commercial on television for some Italian eatery or other this evening, and it contained the song "Mambo Italiano." It's been done by a lot of talented performers (and some not so talented performers) since it was written in 1954.

Playlist

Here's a big chunk of what I've been listening to this evening. I couldn't find it all, so this is all you get.

I don't see any errors in the list (misattributions or misspellings, etc.) and it's late, so I'm just going to leave it without belaboring the artists. If you like 'em, buy 'em - they'll appreciate it.

For the most part, that's pretty sweet stuff. I was also listening to Amanda Palmer, specifically "Leeds United", which I (inexplicably) cannot find in Seeqpod and which is definately less sweet that the stuff above. Mel pointed me to it in the youtubes though, and now I'm sharing it with you.

I know you phonies aren't going to be able to enjoy all the Seeqpod goodness, but you can enjoy the video here.

More Music

Alice Russell has been drawing comparisons to Amy Winehouse (seems like every English girl with a retro sound is the new Amy Winehouse, doesn't it?). I hope she's soberer.

I don't hear it, myself. And she's been cranking out albums for five years or so, so maybe Winehouse sounds like Russell? You can be the judge. She's soulful, and I defy you not to bob your head. Or dance. Or sign up for dance lessons so you can dance.

What has Noah been up to, while he's been spending less time on MyOPera? Well, today, I've been listening to Theresa Andersson.

Althought she's Swedish, Andersson came to the US - New Orleans - to play violin with a fellow swede. She's played with a ton of famous New Orleans heavy hitters like the Neville Brothers, Allen Toussaint, and The Meters.

It turns out she can sing, too.

MIA, Snow, Big Ol' Song List, and Such-like

I know, I haven't been posting - though I've been commenting here and there - unemployment has me down, I think. I just can't seem to think of anything to say, lately. I assume it's temporary, so here I am to remind you that I am alive

Eartha KItt, RIP

Eartha Kitt died today, less than one month shy of her 80th birthday. She was an actress, singer, and caberet star.

She started as a dancer. appeared in "Casbah," and had a couple of hit songs, "Let's Do It" and "C'est si Bon," and her film career took off in the 60s. She replaced Julie Newmar as Catwoman in the "Batman" TV show, but was essentially exiled from the US after making antiwar statements at a White House luncheon.

Punk Rock Christmas

, ,

Mel unwittingly tossed a Christmas challenge at me the other day. Consequently, here's a short list of punk Christmas songs. I've been careful to include none that have the f-bomb in the title (and there are a good number of them), though you might still find some of the lyrics objectionable. I offer this post purely withing the meaning of the holiday.

The playlist follows, and after that the Seeqpod player for your enjoyment. Merry Christmas everyone!

And, for those of you who are celebrating Hanukkah this Christmas (it's a joke!), here's Adam Sandler's "The Hannukah Song":

The Gun Club

I'm in a mood, and this is how I'm feeding it. It's the Gun Club. If you like blues or punk, or blues and punk, you may find them to your liking.

The Gun Club came from LA punk scene in the early 80s. What they played was called punkblues, cowpunk, roots rock, and sometimes deathrock. Leader Jeffery Lee Pierce early discovered that having a band meant free drinks, a problem that would lead to his undoing, and his early death. Pierce wrote for a punk music fanzine in LA that had grown out of a reggae fanzine, so he was exposed to both genres, and traveled to Jamaica to review bands. It was this experience (probably), that led him to take punk to it's roots in a way that other bands had not.

Pierce met Kid Congo Powers (who left to play with The Cramps before the Gun Club cut a record, and later played with the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) outside a Peru Ubu show (a seminal early US punk band), and they decided to start a band. They called it The Cyclones, but the lead singer took off after one show. So they changed the name to "The Creeping Ritual," and Pierce took over vocals. The rest, as they say, is history. The band broke up a couple of times, reformed with new members - sometimes with past members - and had a constant stream of excellent and well-known producers, but never a "hit." Still, they have influenced generations of bands

Pierce experienced failing health due to a lifetime of drugs and drinking (a cautionary tale, boys and girls!), and died of complications from a stroke while visiting his father in 1996. Before his death, he did a good bit of accoustic work, played live with the Bad Seeds a number of times, and wrote an autobigraphy that was sharply critical of many of his former bandmates.

Enjoy. Notice I couldn't let this go without a cover version - today it's Credence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through The Jungle" by

Order

, , ,

I've been reading "The Library at Night," by Alberto Manguel. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes books, libraries, information or order. Manguel has his own, personal library, which is quite astounding, and he related the history of libraries, from Alexandria through the Library of Congress and Google. He touches on Asian libraries, European libraries, American libraries, and virtual libraries (plus a host of libraries not mentioned in my short list). The book, though, is really about a love affair with books. It's a love that's been shared by many, for centuries - millennia, even. This is the first book of Manguel's that I've read, but I will be seeking out the rest. He's a fabulous writer...

...And he started me thinking:

Honey Honey

"Honey Honey" Is a band, and a song. Several songs, really. At least. Maybe a dozen? I should look. At anyrate, it was the band (and the song below) that started me on this post. Enjoy.
